Be proud. Look up to those who are better than you, but be proud of you. 24 years since I came to Norway for the first time. almost 26 years since my master degree (at age of 23). 10 years as professor (at age of 37) and 10 weeks as department head. Firstnow I admit and encourage my self to be proud. So many days spent at feeling not adequate, not clever enought. So many tears as I have get negative feedbacks, or rejections to an application, or just a rude comment. Or as I had made a mistake. When I was a little girl, I get the message that it was not ok at all to be proud. Nor to be an intellectual person. My beloved grandmother used to tell me that “Intellectual women are like tight shoes, one is looking forward to take them off” (le donneintellettuali son come le scarpestrette non sivedel’ora di levarsele di torno). But then she used to buy a lot of books to me and she was a great leader of her four house keepers and she was very proud her self. The rest of the family, exept from me, still criticized her to have been a proud and bossy woman. Dear girls, boys, colleagues, friends, dears those who do not like me, be proud of yourself and what you have achieved. Admire those who succeed without comparing ourself to everybody in everything. Be proud of you and those around you. Have you made mistakes? Be proud. Those who do not do, do not make mistakes.

You know what? If you regret something, try not to regret too much, rather try to stop what you regret. I have been nervous, stressed, aggressive. Not to be bad, but sometimes to be smart, sometimes to be impatient. Stop StopStop. Be kind. Better to appear stupid than rude. If everybody else is rude, be kind. Let us help each other to be kind. Kind does not mean helpful, kind does not mean sweat. Kind means kind. Start your emails with “dear X” and conclude them with “yous YY”. Kind means to say “goodmorning”, “I am sorry”, “thanks”, ” Sorry I do not understand” rather than “You are not clear enought”. Kind means saying “have a nice weekend”.Have a nice weekend kind people!

I regret that I have lost friends during the years. Distance generates distance. “La lontananzaallontana” said the father of a good friend. He was commenting his son’s life, and the life of all us who had left the original family and friends to follow dreams, or career or just to escape from something. While I cannot do much with the relationships that stopped to develop many years ago, I try now to meet the good friends I have. I have never had a shopping weekend with girlfriends in a big city. However I call a couple of girlfriends in Italy when I think they need me and I meet some good friends here in town.I admire those who have good and old friend relationships. Yes, it took me many years to understand, #friends are more important than #career. Family is more important than friends.This I had understood already 10 years ago when I wrote “Cuore & Computer“.
