Identity texts are artifacts that students create that reflect their identities. When students share these texts with others, they receive affirmation and positive feedback about themselves. Activating students' prior knowledge and allowing them to use their first language helps them feel seen and engaged in the classroom. For example, when Tomer entered a new class, being able to do work in Hebrew allowed the teacher to understand his skills and helped him learn despite the language barrier. Kanta also found that being able to express herself through writing in her language made her feel proud of her abilities rather than feeling limited to just coloring.
