On December 3, Food+Tech Connect and Gojee are bringing together journalists, technologists, designers, policy makers, and food data specialists to develop tools and visualizations that help the public better understand how the Farm Bill impacts our lives.
Incremental Wins Exponential Impact
Employee progress is strongly linked to engagement levels. The study found that employees who reported making progress on 5 or more days in a two-week period were most likely to be highly engaged. Key drivers of progress included having input valued, clear expectations and autonomy, while common barriers were responding to crises and lack of priorities. Managers can promote engagement by addressing barriers and targeting efforts to help employees achieve at least 5 days of net progress in a two-week period. However, increasing progress may not impact disengaged employees.

Meysemek is a nutritious bread made by students in a Food Technology Department with the aim of providing benefits to children and youth. It contains vegetables, fruits, and pulses to increase nutrients and antioxidants while addressing issues like malnutrition, physical and mental development deficiencies, and disease risk. ILC-UK is delighted to be working with Alliance Boots and the University College London School of Pharmacy to explore why public health has just got ‘personal’ and if such a trend will yield cost savings or cost some groups of society or sections of the economy more than others.
The event will also mark the launch of a report produced by Professor David Taylor and Dr Jennifer Gill from the UCL School of Pharmacy, supported by Alliance Boots entitled ‘Active Ageing: Live longer and prosper? Towards realising a second demographic dividend in 21st century Europe’.
The debate will focus on the balance between encouraging individual accountability and accepting collective responsibility for achieving longer lives and the consequent implications for health outcomes and cost.
The Coalition Government (like its predecessors) is trying to move away from the ‘nanny state’ towards ‘nudging’ people in the direction of choosing healthier behaviours.
Few people would question the desirability of encouraging more informed personal decision making to prevent avoidable illness. But too much reliance on individual choice and responsibility could fail those most at risk and potentially impose needless costs and losses on individuals, their families and the wider community. Promoting the behavioural and cultural changes needed to deliver better public health and keep NHS and social care costs as affordable as possible remains a pressing and complex challenge.

The 2015 SXSW Interactive Festival featured over 800 sessions, exhibits, competitions and networking events attended by 51,000 people in Austin, Texas. This year saw an increase in international participation and space for startups. A major theme was that innovation crosses all industries and cannot be separated. Virtual reality was a major focus, with many companies demonstrating new VR technologies and content. VR is creating excitement as a new medium for storytelling, though widespread adoption will take time as the technology continues to evolve.

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
