IDCC 2016 Dash Presentation

Dash is a platform developed by the University of California Curation Center to help researchers at all stages of the research lifecycle. It allows them to prepare, select, describe, identify, preserve, and discover research data. Dash is fully pluggable, uses standards-compliant repositories, and integrates with services like Fundref and ORCID. As an open source Ruby on Rails application, it provides a standards-based way for researchers to harvest, deposit, authenticate, and get indexed metadata and research data.

Advances in Network-adaptive Video Streaming
1. Advances in network-adaptive video streaming allow for better delivery of video over best-effort packet networks by jointly optimizing source coding, signal processing, and packet transport.
2. Techniques like adaptive media playout, rate-distortion optimal packet scheduling, and network-adaptive packet dependency management can reduce latency and packet loss while maximizing reconstruction quality.
3. Recent work has shown that approaches like proxy servers using rate-distortion optimized streaming, path diversity, and accelerated retroactive decoding can further improve streaming performance over lossy networks.
Standards' Perspective - MPEG DASH overview and related efforts
This document provides an overview of MPEG DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP):
- MPEG DASH is an open standard for streaming media over HTTP that allows clients to choose the quality of the media stream based on available bandwidth.
- Key features include using HTTP for delivery, client-driven streaming using byte-range requests, support for live and on-demand streaming, and seamless switching between representations of different quality levels.
- The standard defines media presentation descriptions that describe available representations and segments, as well as segment formats based on ISO BMFF and MPEG-2 TS containers.

ExoPlayer for Application developers
ExoPlayer is an open source, application level media player built on top of Android’s low level media APIs (Mediacodec and MediaExtractor). Google is already using it for Youtube and Movies app. It supports DASH, Smooth Streaming and HLS protocols.
Live streaming of video and subtitles with MPEG-DASH
This presentation was made at the MPEG meeting in Shanghai, China, in October 2012, related to the input contribution M26906. It gives the details about the demonstration made during the meeting. This demonstration showed the use of the Google Chrome browser to display synchronized video and subtitles, using the Media Source Extension draft specification and the WebVTT subtitle format. The video and DASH content was prepared using GPAC MP4Box tool.
libdash 2.0
libdash is a library that provides an object orient (OO) interface to the MPEG-DASH standard.
Features
- Cross platform build system based on cmake that includes Windows, Linux and Mac.
- Open source available and licensed under the LGPL.
- Implements the full MPEG-DASH standard according to ISO/IEC 23009-1, Information Technology Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) Part 1: Media Presentation Description and Segment Formats
- Handles the download and xml parsing of the MPD. Based on that it provides an OO based interface to the MPD.
Media elements, e.g., SegmentURL, SegmentTemplate, etc., are downloadable in that OO based structure and can be downloaded through libdash, which internally uses libcurl.
- Therefore basically all protocols that libcurl supports, e.g., HTTP, FTP, etc. are supported by libdash.
- However it also provides a configurable download interface, which enables the use of external connections that can be implemented by the user of the library for the download of media segments.
- The use of such external connections will be shown in the libdash_networkpart_test project which is part of libdash solution and also part of the cross platform cmake system and therefore usable on Windows, Linux and Mac.
- The project contains a sample multimedia player that is based on ffmpeg which uses libdash for the playback of one of our dataset MPDs.
- The development is based on Windows, therefore the code contains a VS10 solution with additional tests and the sample multimedia player.
Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH)
Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) is a media streaming technique that adapts to network conditions. It works by breaking media content into segments that can be requested independently. This allows clients to switch between different representations of the media to adapt to changing network conditions. DASH aims to provide high quality streaming over HTTP by enabling clients to dynamically switch between representations and request missing segments. It specifies formats and behaviors to enable efficient and high-quality delivery of streaming services over HTTP networks.

DSpace-CRIS: new features and contribution to the DSpace mainstream
The presentation focus on the latest releases of DSpace-CRIS, compatible with DSpace 5 and 6, with new exciting features. Particularly interesting is the recent integration between DSpace-CRIS and CKAN released as an independent module. The DSpace-CKAN Integration Module has already been released in open source (same license than DSpace) and it can easily adopted also by standard DSpace installations, both JSPUI or XMLUI.
Starting with DSpace-CRIS 5.6.1, along with the security fixes of DSpace JSPUI 5.6, the following features have been introduced: an extendible UI to deliver the bitstreams with dedicated viewers, a simple metadata editing of any DSpace object; the editing of archived items using the submission UI; a deduplication and duplicate-alert tool; improved ORCiD synchronization; improved submission form; improved security model for CRIS entities; creation of CRIS object as part of the submission process, automatic calculation of metrics; advanced import framework; on-demand DOI registration; template services.
DSpace-CKAN Integration Module allows users to directly preview the dataset content deposited in a CKAN instance from DSpace via a “curation task”. DSpace-CRIS and DSpace-CKAN will be supported by 4Science also for the future major versions of the platform and the roadmap to the DSpace 7 compatibility will be also presented.

DSpace-CRIS is an extended version of DSpace that provides a powerful and flexible data model to describe not just publications but all entities in the research environment and their relationships. It allows institutions to manage research information like researcher profiles, projects, and outputs in a free and open source system, rather than expensive proprietary platforms. New features in recent versions include improved ORCID integration, signposting support, and an integration with CKAN for data discovery, preview, and visualization.

In the space of building products with data, either by dealing with huge amounts of data or by applying machine learning, many different ecosystems meet. Larger volumes of data have to be passed between these systems. The handling of the data is not only down to divide between systems written in Java that need to pass it on to the machine learning model in Python. When you take into account that you want to integrate with the existing business infrastructure, you also need to cater for legacy systems as well do you need to bring the large volumes of data to the user via UIs.

The talk covers a short integration to Linked Data, our approach to building applications on top of the Web of Data (which we term Linked Services) and a number of applications in the areas of house hunting: crowdsourcing car parking, sharing human body processes. The talk also covers recent work on transforming SAP's Unified Service Description Language to a Linked Data format.

Do People Really Know Their Fertility Intentions? Correspondence between Sel...
Fertility intention data from surveys often serve as a crucial component in modeling fertility behaviors. Yet, the persistent gap between stated intentions and actual fertility decisions, coupled with the prevalence of uncertain responses, has cast doubt on the overall utility of intentions and sparked controversies about their nature. In this study, we use survey data from a representative sample of Dutch women. With the help of open-ended questions (OEQs) on fertility and Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods, we are able to conduct an in-depth analysis of fertility narratives. Specifically, we annotate the (expert) perceived fertility intentions of respondents and compare them to their self-reported intentions from the survey. Through this analysis, we aim to reveal the disparities between self-reported intentions and the narratives. Furthermore, by applying neural topic modeling methods, we could uncover which topics and characteristics are more prevalent among respondents who exhibit a significant discrepancy between their stated intentions and their probable future behavior, as reflected in their narratives.

Abstract: In this session, I will discuss the unstructured data and the world of vector databases, we will see how they different from traditional databases.
