6. Data Security :What Apple Says
“Apple takes data security and the privacy of your personal information very seriously. iCloud is built with
industry-standard security practices and employs strict policies to protect your data”
Data Security
Data is Encrypted data in transit and at rest. Also use secure tokens for authentication. All traffic
between your devices and iCloud Mail and Notes is encrypted
Note: music files are not encrypted are they do not contain PII
Strong Passwords
must have a minimum of 8 characters, a number, an uppercase letter, and a lowercase letter. Using a
strong password is the most important thing you can do to help keep your data secure!
Secure Tokens for Authentication
When you access iCloud services using Apple’s built-in apps (for example, Mail, Contacts, and Calendar
apps on iOS or OS X), authentication is handled using an internal secure token. Using secure tokens
eliminates the need to store your iCloud password on devices and computers.

 Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak sees trouble in the iCloud.
 Predicts 'horrible problems' in the coming years as cloud-based computing takes hold.

 No visibility on data. Is it being backed up, encrypted, shared.

9. What Can You Do?
 Understand what can happen to your data…read the fine print!
 Always use common sense; be conscious of what you are
uploading!
 Encrypt your confidential data before its backed up to the cloud
 Password Protect; use complex (alphanumeric) passwords. Don’t
use the same password for everything. Use two factor whenever
possible
 Secure your devices; Use passwords, don’t leave your device
sitting on the bar counter!
 Back up your data; hardware fails, keep a local backup!
 Keep on Patching & Virus Protected; do what you can to prevent
vulnerabilities, and ensure you have the latest Virus signatures!
 Opt out; disable iCloud services on your Mac and iOS devices

10. How to best use icloud?
 1- Make sure iCloud is activated on all of your devices
 2- Make sure you are syncing the items you care about the
most.
 3- Make iCloud like Dropbox
 4-Take advantage of Documents and Photo Stream in the
Cloud
 5-Sync reading lists in Safari
 6-You never have to plug your iPhone or iPad into your PC
again!
 7-You only get 5 GB of free storage with your Apple ID, so use
it wisely. If 5 GB isn't enough, you can buy more storage.
 8-Use iCloud to download apps and music across all of your
devices

11. Short history of Apple's synchronization
options
 Mac OS: -use any email address to register the Apple
products- this was the default ID
 iTunes/App Store: - the Apple ID became associated with
iTunes and the App Store- use to sync all the content from
mobile devices to desktop/laptop computers
 MobileMe: - Apple痴 first attempt into synchronization -
created default @me.com email addresses (second user ID)-
synced purchased content to desktop, but also could sync
email, bookmarks and calendars to the cloud
 iCloud: - @icloud.com email address- iCloud can now sync all
of the content on all of your devices- still have the option to
sync devices to your desktop

best choice?
 - For users to back up all iOS devices wirelessly and
automatically
 - iCloud takes care of backups for you automatically
when connected to Wi-Fi and power (no need for a
computer)
 - Data is restored to all devices via a broadband Wi-

 - No need to connect iOS device to a Mac or PC
frequently
 - For users who do not own a Mac or PC
