Module Aims
To understand the concept of parasitism as a form of symbiosis.
To acquire a knowledge of the history of parasitology, tropical medicine and medical microbiology
Have a basic understanding of the human immune response to parasitic infection
To know the major groups of parasitic organisms, form, function, life cycles and evolution.

2. Content Summary
An introduction to parasitology. Definitions of parasitism, mutualism, symbiosis, commensalism. The impacts of
parasites on human health on a global scale.
History of parasitology, tropical medicine and medical microbiology.
An overview of the taxonomy of the major groups of parasites and infectious diseases affecting humans.
a) Protozoa
b) Plathyheliminths (trematode and cestodes)
c) Nematodes
d) Nematomorpha
e) Acanthocephala
f) Annelida
g) Arthropoda.
Parasite ecology and population structure. Vector biology and control. Medical entomology. Parasite evolution.
A brief summary of the immune response and basic pathology of parasitic disease.
The biology and epidemiology of some major parasitic diseases and infectious diseases will be covered in detail
(chosen from the list outlined below). The lectures will cover their basic biology and form, life cycles and
transmission and their control on an international, national and local scale. Where appropriate more than one
species for each „condition‟/disease will be covered.

Leishmaniaisis (Leishmania sp.)
Nematodes
i) Lymphatic Filariasis (Wuchereria sp. ). ii) Loasis (Loa loa). iii) Dracunculiasis (Dracunculus sp.). iv) Ascariasis

3. Learning Outcomes
# Learning Outcome
1 Have a basic knowledge of the life cycles of the world’s major parasitic infections.
2 Be aware of the global distribution and incidence of major parasitic diseases worldwide.
3 Appreciate the scale of the impact, morbidity and mortality rates of parasitic infections in humans.
4 Have acquired an understanding of the control measures used to reduce the transmission of parasitic
infections and those measures to actually treat the diseases in humans.
5 Have practical experience of identifying and handling parasites and their vectors.
