This document outlines an individual's personal development plan to fulfill the requirements to become a Chartered Engineer as defined by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) 3000 series. It identifies needs related to providing technical and commercial management, demonstrating effective interpersonal skills, and demonstrating commitment to professional standards. The proposed multi-phase plan includes gaining experience through construction work, safety certification, leadership training, research assistant roles, and a PhD program focused on sustainable construction materials and practices compatible with Nigeria's environment. The goal is to strengthen experience and ability over three years in order to gain Chartered status and professionally examine civil engineering challenges in their home country.

This report is aimed at highlighting my personal development needs with reference to the
Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) 3000 series development Needs and further outline a proposal
for achieving these objectives.
1.0 ICE 3000 DEVELOPMENT NEEDS
The ICE 3000 development Needs are the basic requirements for professionalism in civil
engineering. They include the following;

The Development objectives listed above were
drafted by the ICE to cover a wide range of civil
engineering activities such as designing, field
research and implementation, construction, operation
in the fields, transportation, energy, environment
and a lot more of general civil engineering activities.
Development objectives (DO) are part of the ICE
approved training scheme which are to be satisfied
by engineers in their specific specialities and are
usually rated based on Appreciation, Knowledge,
Experience and Ability. ICE has apportioned these
specific ratings to the DOs for which meeting its
requirements means satisfying the ratings for the
DO. The achievement ratings (A,K,E and B) therefore
determine the level an individual must meet up with to satisfy the objectives of his/her intended
qualification.
The table below is the rating of the Institution of Civil Engineers for civil engineering candidates
who aim to be professionals in their profession as a Member of ICE (MICE), Associate member
(AMICE), an ICE member who desires to be registered as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and an
ICE member who desires to be registered as a chartered Engineer (CEng). This table is carefully
extracted from ICE based on my present qualification as one is a student member of ICE with an
accredited Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and soon to be concluded and accredited Master’s
degree in engineering hence the proper aspiration should be achieving the development needs for
the registration as a chattered engineer (CEng)

To be a chattered engineer (CEng) the ICE as expected demands that the engineer must have
gone beyond appreciating and having sound knowledge of his area of specialization but should
have sufficient experience and ability in his/her profession in leading teams to the effective
realisation of sustainable engineering goals.
2.0 MY DEVELOPMENT PLAN
Having being in the construction environment for about two years, and the academic environment
for a year (where I served as a Lecturer assistant), and with hopes and plans to improve and be
more effective in these areas of my career, my development plan will be multi phased. This is
because I have gained some experience in crowed handling and some ability in construction
management, I still lack the useful ability of being proactively influential in effective decision
making it thus affect may ability to provide technical and commercial management (C) and
demonstrate effective interpersonal skills (D). Additionally, I would need to develop a plan to build
some experience and gain ability in demonstrating commitment to professional standards in
appreciation of environmental and sustainability needs as well as managing and applying a safe
system of work where the health and safety of workers is highly placed.

2.1 PROVIDING TECHNICAL AND COMMERCIAL MANAGEMENT
Having appreciated and gained knowledge on the context and relevance of technical and
commercial management in the construction industry, to further build on my experience and
achieve sound ability, I would be involved in further construction activities where I would serve
under a Chattered engineer for about a period of 6 months perfecting my ability to provide
technical support. With respect to commercial management, my understanding of project
management applications is averagely ok but then I would need some case studies via projects to
perfect my ability which I would endeavour to carry out in the six months period.
2.2 DEMONSTRATING EFFECTIVE INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
Ability in demonstrating interpersonal skills is quite essential especially in a construction site where
optimum leadership is required in achieving organisational goals. Similarly the academic
environment also demands effective communication and interpersonal skills. In this regard, I plan
to put in practice the Hersey and Blanchard’s situational leadership model as well as inculcate the
qualities of good leadership and develop sound negotiation skills. This is a broad area that requires
continuous improvement and as such the academic environment will surely be a good environment
for such development as I will constantly be facing students, colleagues and other academicians.
In delivering papers in seminars and conferences my public communication skills will be further
groomed. Very importantly, further studies on recent developments in civil engineering and the
world at large will enlighten my base and leave me very informed in my profession which will be a
good tool for sustaining confidence and gaining the trust and respect of my listeners or team
members. Practically, I will be involved with senior colleagues in the academic industry as an
assistant for a period of 12 months to complete a full session of the academic calendar gaining all
necessary experience and ability required in the profession.
Presently, I have given myself the opportunity of associating with crowd control and management
as I sort and obtained an appointment with Leeds United Football Club (LUFC) as a Steward where
my duties basically require effective interpersonal and communication skills. I will remain in this
employment for at least 4 months and this period of relating with all sorts of individuals will build
in me the required patience for managing workers in the construction industry as well as
communicating effectively with students and colleagues in the academic industry. More so, relating
with colleagues and senior colleagues in LUFC has further improved my appreciation and
experience in team work granting me the ability to be an effective team player.
2.3 DEMONSTRATING COMMITMENT TO PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS
The world is now regarded as a global village with every nation in its bid to meet international
requirements and standards; from applying basic design principles, to health and safety
management and more recently meeting sustainability requirements. I quite appreciate all of this,
and do have sound knowledge on the context and relevance of the commitment of the civil
engineering sector to professional standards. However, the system of operation of the construction
sector in my country Nigeria prior to this time has not exposed me to the relevance of these
especially in the areas of health and safety and sustainability.
My studies in Leeds Beckett University, over the past 11 months has shown and developed my
mind into the bigger picture of the benefits of a safe working environment and in which the design
of civil engineering projects are integrated into the environment to maximising the efficiency of
construction projects as well as limit environmental pollution. In this regard, my dissertation was
on a sustainable mortar (Lime Mortar) which uses supplementary cementitous materials to
improve its strength gaining ability. The results prove that Hydraulic Lime mortar with 2.5% GGBS
addition is above 75% more environmental friendly than cement mortar in terms of carbon
footprint and this mortar meets the standard requirements of mortar for masonry or other mortar
uses.

My challenge would basically be the application of this basic knowledge in my systems of operation
back in my home country. However the plan would be to start by observing standard health and
safety requirements in the construction environment, developing my understanding of the health
and safety regulation of Nigeria and acquiring more knowledge by enrolling into National
Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) which should last for a minimum
of three months. This will build up my ability in ensuring standard health and safety measures are
put in place for both employees and the society.
The global requirement to reduce harmful emissions such as carbon dioxide into the environment
greatly depends on the building and construction sector as it accounts to more than 50% of global
emissions. Being in the construction sector, I am yet to gain the experience and ability of
overseeing the use of more sustainable building materials and techniques. This objective I would
have to achieve by engaging in further research where such is in use and how it integrates into
such environmental conditions. This objective should take close to three years as I plan on
pursuing it via a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD in environmental Sustainability) programme which
would provide me the time required to gain the necessary knowledge, experience and ability
relating the environmental and climatic condition of Nigeria with green policies and practices
required to meet the international standards and requirements of environmental sustainability for
the construction sector.
