Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis • Chronic, debilitating conditions • More common than we think • Crohn’s disease: 115.000 people in the UK • Ulcerative Colitis: 146.000 people in the UK • Several treatment options, including different regimes of medical therapy and different surgical procedures. • Complex decision making. - 4. What is ileoanal pouch (J-pouch) surgery? When surgery requires removing the entire large bowel, traditionally patient required a permanent stoma bag.
- 5. What is ileoanal pouch (J-pouch) surgery? • It is a complex operation to replace a very specialised part of the large bowel (rectum). Thanks to the J-pouch, patients do not require the stoma bag • In UK hospitals, this operation takes place on average once a year. • UK surgeons who perform pouch surgery, will often perform only 1 procedure every 5 years. • It is very difficult to develop expertise on when, how to, when not, do this procedure

EDUCATIONAL OFFER Four online modules: >30 lectures, videos, suggested reading and assessments (12 months to complete) 2 pre-recorded Live-surgery sessions (remote attendance via Zoom): surgical techniques in Crohn’s disease, surgical techniques in Ulcerative colitis and ileoanal pouch surgery Case based discussion (remote attendance via Zoom): multidisciplinary management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. In person attendance of one day meeting in London, for hands-on wet lab training on surgical techniques in IBD and minimally invasive surgery.
