4. Editing/lighting & Shot Type:
Lighting:
➔ Most commonly used lighting - Soft Lighting/High Key Lighting
➔ Used a range of lightings throughout
➔ Including: high key lighting/low key lighting/soft and hard lighting
➔ Tended to use very bright neon colours of lighting in all videos
➔ Not many use of shadows always very bright/clear
Editing & Shot Type:
➔ A use of wide range shot types
➔ I counted that they used all shot types throughout the 5 videos
➔ Close up shots and high angle shots were also commonly used
➔ Also seemed to be edited so there was a constant change variety in
shot types to make it more interesting to watch
➔ Focus on certain people who were singing and then film them as a
whole group together
➔ Throughout all the music videos they loved the use of bright vibrant
colours in the editing
5. Hair & Makeup:
❖ Hair quite feminine in the way it’s styled/cut
going against male stereotypes
❖ All of the people in the group all have the
same type of hair cut:
❖ Long curtain like hair cut as pictured below
❖ In all 5 videos at least half if not more of the
group have their hair dyed
❖ Hair dyed typically rainbow colours
❖ or pastel tones
❖ Feminine
❖ Colourful/bright
❖ Makeup choices very vibrant/playful most of
the time. Otherwise makeup is quite natural
looking with dark pink lips.
❖ Goes against male stereotypes
❖ Makeup always coordinates with their hair:
❖ For example in this picture above his hair is
pastel pink tones and his makeup clearly
coordinates with this colour/pink tones
6. Location/backdrops:
➔ Each music video was filmed in different
locations
➔ Not one video just had the same
location/backdrop
➔ Very fantasy locations/backdrops didn’t look
real
➔ Bright/vibrant
➔ Expensive not cheap
➔ High up standards location never looked rough
➔ For example in ‘Boy With Luv’ the
picture above from the opening scene
of the music video there are constant
changes in locations throughout the
music video all under the theme of
vibrant colours
7. Casting & Props:
Props & Set Design:
- From the five youtube music videos i have
chosen none of them included the cast using
props
- The videos are mostly just heavily
choreographed dance routines so no need to
use props
- In the music videos there is an equal amount
of fakes sets and real locations
- Most of the set designs are typically very
brightly coloured unique sets
Casting:
- The casting for BTS is 7 korean males
- They are all roughly the same age (in
their mid 20s)
- All the males all look very similar and
have the same fashion/style
- More feminine looking males
- The cast go against today’s
stereotypical males as they dye their
hair and wear makeup
8. Choreography & Outfits:
Choreography:
● The 5 videos i looked at were all very heavily
choreographed
● Technical dance routines
● All good at dancing so able to to do difficult
choreography
● Not only was it heavily dance choreographed but
also just in general when they were doing solo
parts to the songs
● Choreography helps with structure of the music
video
● Lots of quick little clips when dancing to get all
angles
Outfits:
● Always tend to be colour coordinated
● For example in their song ‘butter’ the whole group
was colour coordinated to the song as butter is
yellow
● Where bright/vibrant coloured outfits to match in
with there songs as their songs are very uplifting
and vibrant colours can connote to happiness
● Also tend to be quite out there funky outfits trying to
be quirky
● start fashion trends as people want to be like them
9. Representation & Narrative: Mis En Scene:
★ The bts group of 7 males is represented in a very
positive playful way
★ The way they are presented in there music videos
through colours as they use a lot of colours which
show happiness/positive/fun
★ People want to look up to them
★ Also represented in a very friendly innocent way
★ I feel there main narrative from there music videos
is to go out and have fun/enjoy life as they are
always to happy and doing fun/interesting things in
music videos.
Design:
★ The design of mostly all of the sets gives off a
very fun positive look and feel
★ All designed very colourful
★ Range of colours used
Composition:
★ The BTS group is always very well organised
in terms of organisation and arrangement
★ They are always in the centre of the screen
when being filmed to show they are the centre
of attention
★ Always arranged
in a neat formation
★ Most important
singer at the front of
the formation
