appeared on the cover of Forbes’s 60 richest self-made women issue. As many people
pointed out, Jenner’s success would have been impossible if she hadn’t been born white,
healthy, rich, and famous. She built a successful cosmetics company not just with hard
work but on a towering foundation of good luck.
Around the same time, there was another minor uproar when Refinery29 published “A
Week in New York City on $25/Hour,” an online diary by someone whose rent and bills
are paid for by her parents. It turns out $25 an hour goes a lot further if you have no
expenses!

These episodes illustrate what seems to be one of the enduring themes of our age: socially
dominant groups, recipients of myriad unearned advantages, willfully refusing to
acknowledge them, despite persistent efforts from socially disadvantaged groups. This is
not a new theme, of course — it waxes and wanes with circumstance — but after a multi-
decade rise in inequality, it has come roaring back to the fore.
Of course, socially dominant groups have every incentive to ignore luck. And they have
found a patron saint in President Trump, who once claimed, “My father gave me a very
small loan in 1975, and I built it into a company that’s worth many, many billions of dollars.”
Neither side of that claim is true. But in this, as in so much else, Trump’s brazenness
serves as cover, a signal that it’s still okay to cling to this myth.
These recent controversies reminded me of the fuss around a book that came out a few
years ago: Success and Luck: Good Fortune and the Myth of Meritocracy, by economist
Robert Frank. (Vox’s Sean Illing interviewed Frank last year.) It argued that luck plays a
large role in every human success and failure, which ought to be a rather banal and
uncontroversial point, but the reaction of many commentators was gobsmacked outrage.
On Fox Business, Stuart Varney sputtered at Frank: “Do you know how insulting that was,
when I read that?”
It’s not difficult to see why many people take offense when reminded of their luck,
especially those who have received the most. Allowing for luck can dent our self-
conception. It can diminish our sense of control. It opens up all kinds of uncomfortable
questions about obligations to other.

Despite deceit, greed, and incompetence on a previously unimaginable scale, people are still
trusting too much.
For the past two decades, trust has been touted as the all-powerful lubricant that keeps the
economic wheels turning and greases the right connections—all to our collective benefit. Popular
business books proclaim the power and virtue of trust. Academics have enthusiastically piled up
study after study showing the varied benefits of trust, especially when it is based on a clear track
record, credible expertise, and prominence in the right networks.
Then along came Bernie. There was “something about this person, pedigree, and reputation that
inspired trust,” mused one broker taken in by Bernard Madoff, who confessed to a $65 billion
Ponzi scheme—one of the largest and most successful in history. On the surface, Madoff
possessed all the bona fides—the record, the résumé, the expertise, and the social connections.
But the fact that so many people, including some sophisticated financial experts and business
leaders, were lulled into a false sense of security when dealing with Madoff should give us
pause. Why are we so prone to trusting?
Madoff is hardly the first to pull the wool over so many eyes. What about Enron, WorldCom,
Tyco, and all the other corporate scandals of the past decade? Is there perhaps a problem with
how we trust?
I have been grappling with this question for most of my 30 years as a social psychologist,
exploring both the strengths and the weaknesses of trust. In the wake of the recent massive and
pervasive abuses—and with evidence of more scandals surfacing each day—I think it’s worth
taking another look at why we trust so readily, why we sometimes trust poorly, and what we can
do about it. In the following pages, I present the thesis that human beings are naturally
predisposed to trust—it’s in our genes and our childhood learning—and by and large it’s a
survival mechanism that has served our species well. That said, our willingness to trust often gets
us into trouble. Moreover, we sometimes have difficulty distinguishing trustworthy people from
untrustworthy ones. At a species level, that doesn’t matter very much so long as more people are
trustworthy than not. At the individual level, though, it can be a real problem. To survive as
individuals, we’ll have to learn to trust wisely and well. That kind of trust—I call it tempered
trust—doesn’t come easily, but if you diligently ask yourself the right questions, you can
develop it.
Let’s begin by looking at why we’re so prone to trust.

Such individuals replace the Word of God as the balance in the lives of those whom they dominate; they react negatively if they are not the control point of all decisions made. We must realize that what is happening in the spiritual realm is being reflected in the natural realm. There is a great struggle going on in the world today for control of people's minds. This struggle is between the forces of light (Christianity) and the forces of darkness (Satanic powers).

While this book will deal with the abuse of control, we will also examine the positive side of control, which is called "commitment." This God-given authority is placed on an individual who is committed to fulfill the plan of God in the earth and who looks to the Lord—not to people—for personal security and promotion. Each of us needs to exercise self-control in order to keep ourselves free from sin. We exercise that control by applying the Word of God to our lives. The Word is the balance, and we must all use discipline in our daily experiences. But people who exercise abusive control seek to become the deciding factor in the lives of others. Such individuals replace the Word of God as the balance in the lives of those whom they dominate; they react negatively if they are not the control point of all decisions made. We must realize that what is happening in the spiritual realm is being reflected in the natural realm. There is a great struggle going on in the world today for control of people's minds. This struggle is between the forces of light (Christianity) and the forces of darkness (Satanic powers).

- 7. One study which asked whether people believe that things happen outside of their control found out that there is a significantbelief in outside forces. The data shows countries lie mostly between 10 to 60 percent that they disagree things happen outside of their control. This implies the role divineguidance and the society we live in have.
