OVERIVEW
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive
lung condition that includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
It is characterized by persistent inflammation that interferes with
normal lung function, either through excessive mucus and / or
trapped air in the lungs.
While COPD is largely preventable — as the primary cause
is smoking — onset of the disease presents various health
challenges beyond the pulmonary symptoms of shortness of
breath and coughing. Exercise intolerance, for instance, often
results from muscle weakness, where individuals with COPD
typically lead a sedentary lifestyle due to symptom-limited activity.
The low impact nature of WBV, however, makes it an ideal option
for individuals with COPD to initiate and maintain an exercise
program, as well as presents various benefits that contribute to
improved function and quality of life.
Following is an exploration of the top 5 reasons to consider
WBV as part of an exercise program to address the symptoms
associated with COPD.
WBV has been studied as an innovative
training tool for individuals with COPD, and
research has shown a range of positive and
encouraging outcomes.

WHOLE BODY VIBRATION
REASON 1
Muscle weakness is a common issue amongst individuals with
COPD, due to physical deconditioning as a result of limited
activity. Breathing difficulties also affect the ability to engage
in exercise, perpetuating the muscle weakness and decreased
exercise tolerance.
Studies have long supported the use of WBV for muscle
strengthening in healthy adults. Yet more recent studies have
investigated the potential strengthening effects of WBV in
various patient populations with specific medical conditions,
including COPD.
One such study utilized the 5 Times Sit-To-Stand test as a
measure of improvement. This evaluation involves recording
the time it takes for an individual to transfer from a seated to
standing position five times from a standard chair. The ability
to perform this test at a quicker pace is indicative of increased
lower extremity strength.

COPD: A Community-Based Efficacy Trial, Furness et
al, 2014.
Subjects in this study participated
in a 6-week WBV program at 25 Hz,
following which they demonstrated an
18% improvement in this score. 1

Similarly, another commonly used measure here
is the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, which involves
recording the amount of time it takes an individual to
rise from a chair, walk 3 meters (10 feet), turn around,
walk back to the chair, and return to a seated position.
The subjects in this same study who used TUG as a key
outcome measure demonstrated a 13% improvement
in the score following a 6-week WBV program twice a
week at 25 Hz.
Another related trial utilized the same methodology,
and likewise indicated a significant improvement in
favor of the group that underwent WBV training —
alongside a standard exercise program — versus a
control group that did not receive WBV. Thus it can
be further concluded that WBV presents additional
benefits on top of a traditional workout regimen. 2

REASON 2
The 6-Minute Walk Test is also a commonly
used standard for patients with chronic
pulmonary conditions to assess endurance.
The results of one study in this area
demonstrated that, following a 3-week
program in which participants received
WBV 5 times a week, there was significantly
greater improvement in the 6-Minute Walk
Test distance as compared to a control group
in which participants trained without WBV. 3
An analysis of four related research articles
further noted that all studies demonstrated
improved functional exercise capacity in the
WBV compared to a control group that did
not engage in WBV training. 4

REASON 3
The Berg Balance test is another standardized clinical assessment:
in this case used to objectively observe an individual’s static and
dynamic balance. One recent study concerned with this measure
found that there was a significant improvement in the Berg score
following completion of a 12-week WBV program, where subjects
received the treatment twice a week at 6 to 12 Hz.
Speaking to the broad efficacy of WBV across patient types,
participants in this study were diagnosed with stable COPD ranging
from Stage I to Stage III, were over the age of 65, and had not
engaged in any regular exercise routine in the 3 months prior to
joining the study. 5

WHOLE BODY VIBRATION
REASON 4
Blood tests conducted on patients with COPD often show an increase in
chemicals that indicate chronic inflammation. This is especially evident
in patients who have a more advanced stage of the disease, and require
periods of hospitalization to manage the symptoms.
One study compared a program of WBV with standard treatment to a
control group that did not undergo WBV training. Results were decisively
in favor of the WBV group, as subjects demonstrated a significantly
increased level of several chemicals associated with good muscle function
— PGC1-a (peroxisome-proliferator-activated-receptor coactivator 1-a)
and irisin — as well as a significant decrease in IL-8 (interleukin-8), a
chemical indicative of inflammation. 2
Notably, these changes were observed following a WBV program in which
subjects performed 3 bouts of training for just 2 minutes each per day.

REASON 5
Quality of life (QOL) is often affected greatly
by COPD symptoms, as they can severely
restrict function and mobility. The St. George’s
Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) is commonly
used to assess health-related quality of life in
individuals diagnosed with COPD.
The results of one study in this area were
supportive of using a WBV program to
improve QOL, where subjects demonstrated
improvement in all areas of this survey
following completion of a WBV program, 3
times a week for 12 weeks at 35 Hz. 6
A similar study utilized the COPD Assessment
Test (CAT) as an outcome measure to assess
quality of life. The CAT test is an 8-item survey
that evaluates symptoms related to coughing,
mucus production, chest tightness, and
shortness of breath, as well as limitation of
activities, confidence when leaving the home,
quality of sleep, and energy level.
Results likewise demonstrated a significant
CAT score improvement in the group who
underwent WBV training. 2

WHY HYPERVIBE?
In summary, the research supports WBV as a safe,
effective, and well-tolerated exercise tool for
individuals with various stages of COPD. But what
makes Hypervibe the right choice for you?
Our unique design combines several essential
features and technologies that are necessary
to maximize your WBV results. As such, when
comparing Hypervibe with other products on
the market, it is important to understand which
elements yield the highest quality and best
results for the money.
The following discussion aims to clarify a few of
the most important factors to aid in your decision-
making process.
WHOLE BODY VIBRATION

PIVOTAL PLATFORM
WHOLE BODY VIBRATION
Hypervibe’s pivotal design was based on a unit called
the Galileo: the pioneer of this technology, which has
been studied by space programs around the world. The
Galileo, however, is not widely available to consumers
due to its high cost.
Murray Seaton, the inventor of Hypervibe, revolutionized
WBV technology through the creation of this high
quality, compact unit, which includes a pivotal platform.
Other units on the market which boast similar results
are sometimes designed with lineal platforms — the
distinction here being the way in which the platform
moves to deliver the vibration.
A lineal platform primarily moves in an up / down
fashion, whereas the pivotal platform includes a rotation
component. This feature follows the normal movement
of the pelvis and hips, thereby producing superior results
in terms of muscle activation throughout the body. In
addition, it reduces the amount of vibration that passes
upward through the body into the head, which creates a
more comfortable experience for the user.
As WBV is a new sensory experience for most individuals,
it is important to note that the use of a pivotal platform
also reduces or eliminates the possibility of unpleasant
sensations that occur more frequently with use of a lineal
platform, such as nausea and dizziness.
We actually found that Hypervibe was equal to or greater
than Galelio from a technical standpoint for a fraction of
the cost, and their customer service has been amazing.

RANGE OF FREQUENCIES
Frequency refers to the speed of movement of the platform, which determines how
the body receives and processes the vibration stimulus. Hypervibe’s wide range of
frequencies, as low as 5Hz and up to 35Hz, allows the user to set the pace of the
vibration to target specific goals such as relaxation, balance training, or strengthening.
It is important to note here that this feature is also unique to our design as compared
to our competitors.
Units that only produce high range frequencies, or those that only produce low range
frequencies, do not offer the same range of benefits as Hypervibe. Our lower frequency
settings can be used to promote widespread relaxation — which creates a calming
effect on the nervous system to minimize pain and enhance mental clarity — while our
higher frequency settings stimulate muscle strength, bone growth, weight loss, and
hormonal benefits.
Higher frequency settings produce increased
muscle contractions, which promote improved
strength and power. This, in turn, can positively
impact posture, balance, and proprioception.
