suggested that these operations deter groundwater source quality. But, based on
the recently peer-reviewed evidence and studies, it shows that the industry does
not pose any alleged systemic impact on groundwater.
Proof in Multi-Year Studies
The Heartland Institute reports, “Since 2010, at least 15 of these studies have
been produced, including ones by the Bureau of Economic Geology at the Jackson
School of Geosciences at the University of Texas-Austin, the Wyoming Department
of Environmental Quality, the California Council on Science and Technology and the
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Department of Energy‟s National
Energy Technology Laboratory, and Germany‟s Federal Institute for Geosciences
and Natural Resources. ”

3. While there are isolated cases of the activity affecting wells, the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that “the number of cases where
drinking water resources were impacted is small relative to the number of
hydraulically fractured wells.”
Lead Examples
Among the many protested negative effects of the fracking and mining industry
are the groundwater natural gas contaminations from various oil and pipelines.
However, a recent study from the University of Cincinnati in Utica-shale found
that the 23 wells in Ohio‟s Belmont, Carroll, Columbiana, Harrison, and Stark
Counties show no evidence for gas contamination from shale oil.

4. The potential risk of contamination is a genuine concern — however, it will
ultimately depend on the fracking and mining operators on how safe they will
perform their activities. The February 2016 research paper from the university
revealed that „none of the measured parameters significantly varied‟ before or
after the drilling operations.
