HUMILITY
After having a conversation with a few personalities on “HUMILITY & arrogance with their impacts on
businesses”, I have briefed my understanding in the assignment. The overall views of the people differed but, all
had the common essence of “Creating Mutual Understandings in their businesses”.
WHAT IS HUMILITY?
Humility is the personal honesty that you, as the leader, do not know everything and do not have all the answers.
Humility enables you to question people’s flattery, to admit your mistakes and weaknesses, and to be more open
to other’s opinions and challenges to your viewpoints.
Humility is the quality of being modest and meek with no feelings such as “ego”. Humility can be said as a God
gifted quality possessed by a very few wise men.
A humble person is patient, wise and equates himself fairly with others. He does not has the “I AM ALWAYS
RIGHT” perception about himself, as he seeks others' opinions and easily accept his mistakes ,if found.
HUMILITY V/S ARROGANCE IN BUSINESS
Humility always provides positivity and stability to a leader. If he's humble, he is always going to get respect
from his juniors or even from his seniors.
I would like to elaborate this with an example:
If Mr.A, the CEO of his company, while receiving the award on behalf of his company, solely takes credit on
himself by saying “This award has been won because of my hardwork, dedication and my leadership qualities to
control my emplyoees”
The impact in this situation would be- employees getting demotivated
- they may create a negative attitude towards their proudy boss
-they may loose the willingness to take initiative
-it may hamper their performance
-it may create an urge to switch to other job.
Hence , if Mr.A had shown a little humility, he may have created a complete different and magical effect on his
employees and their performances. For eg- By saying, “This is the fruit of hardwork of my dedicated team and I
would like to thank them for their support and services”
The impact here would be

-boosted up morale of employees
-more confident
-job satisfaction

Thus, the example shows that possessing humility by a leader creates a win-win situation for both the
employees, the company as well as the leader.
IS HUMILITY ALWAYS GOOD IN BUSINESS?
I was quite confident about the answer to be “yes”. But, to my surprise, they said “NO”.
A leader should be able to create a balance between humility and arrogance and should be able to adjust both
with respect to different situations.
If, he always acts humble, people may start taking him as “Granted”.
He should never compromise on his “Company's Reputation” in the wake of being “humble”.
Sometimes, the situations have to handled arrogantly ,as “HUMILITY” cannot always kill or win the ills.
For example- If a competitor cheats on you and steals your idea of 'launching an innovative product'. In
such a case, humility would not be much of a help. You have to take a stand and point a finger at the
competitor and fight him for his illegal act . Because, if you don't , you end up losing and people start
taking you for “granted”.
So, the Leaders have to keep a balance and adjust themselves accordingly as HUMILITY alone is not the “best
attitude” and ARROGANCE alone is also not a “best attitude”.
Keeping a balance and moulding youself according to the situations can lead to success.
Before having a conversation with the below mentioned people, I always believed that “Humility is always
good”. But, now I am quite convinced , when they gave me examples from their experiences, that humility is
good, but not always...
