Shealsohadnomoneytofundthetrip,sohadtorely onlocal casualworktosupporther trainingandlaterpurchaseofanimals.Sheinitiallyvisited threecameleersinordertofinda personwillingtotrainherin camel management: anold Afghan trader named Sally Mahomet, a tourism operator, and Kurt Posel. She began herapprenticeship with the latter who proved to be both a cruel taskmaster, and an Indian giver, and sheeventuallyfoundhersaviourinSally,whoofferedher twomonthsworkin returnfortwocamelsforherproposed trek. But this was only the beginning of an arduous process of nearly two years tending twoanimals,oneofwhicheventuallyhadtobeput down,andduringwhichshealmostgaveupthechallenge. "I said,`A lotof peoplearelookingforyou,'"snowmobilerJosephPaulrecalledtellingthe17-year-oldwhentheymet up."Hesaid,`I bet. I've been outherefortwonights.'" Paul,a44-year-old volunteerfirecaptainfromWarwick,Mass.,saidJoytoldhimheknew howtostayalive fromwatchingasurvivalshowon TV. The17-year-oldtoldhisrescuerhedrankfroma streamandusedhemlockbranchesina shelterhebuilt.Theteenageralsosaidhetriedto lighta fireby rubbing stickstogether,butwasn'tsuccessful. Paulsaidhegave theskier somepeanutsandcrackerstoeatandcalled911beforewhiskinghim about 4 milesdowna mountaintrailtoan ambulance. "Other thancold,heseemedtobe in really goodshape,"Paulsaid. Joytold hisrescuerhegotlostaftercuttingthroughthewoodstotrytosavetime afterabackcountryski trailended.He'dhadnothingtoeat sincehe gotlost,andit wasarareoccasioninwhichhedidn't havehiscellphonewithhim,theskier toldhisrescuer. Theteenager'sparents,RobertandDonnaJoy,releasedastatementthroughthehospitalthankingthosewhosearchedfortheir sonand prayedforhisrecovery. TheweatherconditionsSundaynightandMondaynightwerebadenoughthat thesearchhadtobe suspended,andJoysurvivedbybuildinga moundofsnowthathefashionedintoashelterthathecouldcrawlinto,saidLt.Kevin Adam,thesearchcoordinator. Joywasin "remarkably goodshape,"andithelpedthatthewindsweren'tas strongin thevalley wherehewasfoundastheywere uponthe mountain,Adamsaid. "Hedid therightthingin building asnowcave,andobviously he'sstill alive totalk aboutit,sohe madesomegood decisions,"Adamsaid. Joyandhis fathersplituponSundayaftertakingachairlifttothetopofthe mountain,andtheytookseparatetrailsdowninwhatwasgoing tobe the lastrunoftheday, officialssaid.Theyplannedtomeetina parkinglot,andthefathercalledforhelpwhenhis sondidn'tshowup. Paulwasnotpartoftheofficialsearchteam,buthadseenthestoryon thenewsanddecidedtoconductanimpromptusearchon atrail knownasthe CaribouPondRoad.HeownspropertynearbyandwasoutlookingforJoyforabout90 minutesbeforetheskier flaggedhim down. "I know thatarea,soI figuredI'dheadthatwayon asnowmobile,"Paulsaidlater."I thoughtthatifI couldhelpout,I wouldtry." When Paul broughtJoytothe ambulance,theboy hadatearfulreunionwithhisparents.DavidLeaming, aphotographerfortheMorningSentinel newspaper,heardJoysaytohisfather:"I'mOK.I'mjusttired." SugarloafskiresortGeneralManagerJohnDillersaidhecriedwhenheheardJoywasfound."Itwasalmostlikea miracle,"hesaid.
