It began with the slave trade from Africa to the Americas in the 1700s and increased due to events like the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the Asian Financial Crisis in the 1990s. Statistics show trafficking originates from and is destined to all regions globally. Organizations provide direct services to victims and advocate against trafficking.

In other words, while there is movement of children through procurement and sale from one country to another, with India being both a supplier as well as a “consumer”, there is internal “movement” of children within the country itself - one town to another, one district to another and one state to another. It is undertaken in an organised manner, by organised syndicates or by individuals, and sometimes informal groups. Relatives and parents are part of this as well.

The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
