GENERAL OBJECTIVE
At the end of the class student will be able to acquire the knowledge regarding Definition ,
characteristics and Maslow hierarchy model of human basic needs.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
At the end of the class the student will be able to:
 define Human basic needs
 enlist the characteristics of human basic needs
 explain the Maslow hierarchy model of human basic needs
TERMINOLOGY
NEEDS – a lack of something required or desired.
Needs motivate us to act.
BASIC NEEDS – are the important needs that every
human being needs, and other needs can not imagine
without fulfillment of these needs.
HIERARCHY – means that in any list of items some items
are classed as more important than others.
INTRODUCTION
Every human being on the earth has certain basic needs which
need to be fulfilled . A basic human need is the requirement for
biological, social ,spiritual and psychological functioning
experienced by the person with out which he can not survive. Each
individual has unique characteristics but certain needs are common
to all people. Human needs are commonly used to refer to the
drivers of peoples actions the motives behind human behavior .
DEFINITION
According to Navdeep Kaur Brar – A basic
human need is want of something or
requirement for biological, social and spiritual
functioning experienced by a person without
which a person cannot survive.

According to Skinner – Each individual has unique
characteristics but certain needs are common to
all people .
DEFINITION
According to Maslow – A need is something that
is desirable, useful or necessary human needs
are physiological and psychological condition
that an individual must meet to achieve a state of
health or well being.
CHRACTERSTICS /NATURE

Abraham Maslow developed a hierarchy of basic human needs in
1968. Maslow hierarchy of needs is a model that nurses used to
understand the interrelationship of basic human needs.
SUMMARY
Human basic needs include
physiological necessities like
food ,water and shelter as well as
psychological needs like safety, love
and esteem. Maslow categorize these
into five levels with self actualization at
the top . Meeting these needs is
essential for survival, well being and
personal growth.
CONCLUSION
Meeting human basic needs is
fundamental for survival, psychological
well being and personal development.
Addressing these needs ensures a
foundation for individuals to thrive,
achieve self fulfillment and contribute
meaningfully to society.
