HUM 200 Module 1 Assignment 3 Recognizing
Arguments
For more classes visit
www.snaptutorial.com
In this assignment, you will apply key concepts covered in the module
readings. You will identify the component parts of arguments and
differentiate between various types of arguments such as strict, loose,
inductive, and deductive. You will then construct specific, original
arguments.
There are two parts to the assignment. Complete both parts.
Part 1
1a: Identify Components of Arguments
Identify the component parts of the argument, premises and conclusion,
for the following passages. Where applicable, highlight key words or
phrases that identify a claim as a premise or a conclusion.
Refer to the following example:
―All men are mortal. Socrates is a man. Therefore, Socrates is mortal.‖
All men are mortal. Premise
Socrates is a man. Premise
Therefore, Socrates is mortal. Conclusion
―Therefore‖ is a key word indicating the claim is the conclusion.
1. Sue is pregnant and will give birth to one child. We know already
this child has no genetic anomalies. If Sue’s baby is a boy, he will be
named Mark. If Sue’s baby is a girl, she will be named Margaret. Sue
will have either a boy or a girl. So we know Sue’s baby will be named
Mark or Margaret.
Premises: If Sue’s baby is a boy it will be named Mark.
Premises: If Sue’s baby is a girl it will be named Margaret.
Conclusion: Sue’s baby will be named Mark or Margaret. .
2. If the library has TheLord of the Rings, you won’t find it on the first
floor. This is because all fantasy novels are fiction and all works of
fiction are housed on the second floor of the library. Of course, I am
assuming that all the books are properly shelved at this time.
Premises: Because all fantasy novels are fiction.
Premises: and all works of fiction are housed on the second floor.
Conclusion: If the library has The Lord of the Rings you won’t find it on
the first floor.
―Because‖ is a key word indicating a premises.
3. ―After a year, brain scans showed that among the walkers, the
hippocampus had increased in volume by about 2 percent on average; in
the others, it had declined by about 1.4 percent. Since such a decline is
normal in older adults, ’a 2 percent increase is fairly significant,’ said
the lead author, Kirk Erickson, a psychologist at the University of
Pittsburgh. Both groups also improved on a test of spatial memory, but
the walkers improved more. While it is hard to generalize from this
study to other populations, the researchers were delighted to learn that
the hippocampus might expand with exercise‖ (Span, 2011).

HUM 200 Module 2 Assignment 2 Factors In
Favor of and Against
For more classes visit
www.snaptutorial.com
Finding ―factors for‖ and ―factors against‖ a position is a versatile tool
for critical thinkers. In this assignment, you will practice this technique
more formally by examining one of several contemporary issues.
Research methods for creating arguments using factors for and factors
against an issue using your textbook, the Argosy University online
library resources, and the Internet.
Select a topic for use in this assignment. Examples of topics can include
the following:
· Lowering the legal drinking age in the United States.
· Enacting compulsory military service obligation for all US
citizens.
· Instituting health insurance discounts (or other incentives) for
proof of maintaining physical fitness.
For the selected topic, complete the following:
· Construct at least six reasons for and six reasons against the
stance.
· Rank the reasons in terms of strength and effectiveness. Explain
why you identified an argument as the strongest or weakest in each
category.
Write a 2–3-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to
citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention:
LastnameFirstInitial_M2_A2.doc.

HUM 200 Module 3 Assignment 2 LASA 1
Analytical Summaries
For more classes visit
www.snaptutorial.com
For this assignment, you will compose two short critical essays
explaining and evaluating arguments by other authors. This assignment
allows you to analyze an issue from a variety of perspectives and assess
arguments for or against the issue. By focusing your attention on how
the original authors use evidence and reasoning to construct and support
their positions, you can recognize the value of critical thinking in public
discourse.
Read the two articles "Shooting in the Dark", and "Focusing on the How
of Violence" and write two separate analytical summaries.
This assignment has two parts.
Part 1—First Article
Write an analytical summary of the article focusing on the article’s main
claims. Include the following:
· Provide a brief summary of the argument presented in the article.
· Identify and discuss three ways the author uses evidence to
support assertions.
· Analyze how the author signals this usage through elements such
as word choices, transitions, or logical connections.
Part 2—Second Article
Write an analytical summary of the article focusing on the article’s main
claims. Include the following:
· Provide a brief summary of the argument presented in the article.
· Identify any value-based assertions in the article and how the
author supports these value-based conclusions with evidence.
· Discuss how this evidence does or does not demonstrate
relevance, consistency, transparency, and speculation.
· Analyze how the author signals the use of these elements through
language. For example, word choices, transitions, or logical connections.
Write a 1,000–1,200 word paper in Word format. Apply APA standards
to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention:
LastnameFirstInitial_M3_A2.doc.

HUM 200 Module 4 Assignment 2 Journaling
Exercise
For more classes visit
www.snaptutorial.com
This assignment prepares you for the final Microsoft PowerPoint
assignment inM5: Assignment 1. Throughout this course, you have
learned to apply a variety of critical thinking techniques to explore and
assess contemporary issues.
Often, you may get the best results using a multistep process that
provides adequate time to think, write, research, and rewrite. For this
assignment, you will review the article by Peter Singer titled ―America’s
Shame,‖ which you will also use in M5: Assignment 1.
Using the Argosy University online library resources, review the article
by Peter Singer.
· Singer, P. (2009). America’s shame. The Chronicle of Higher
Education, 55(27). B6–B10. (EBSCO AN 37137370)

HUM 200 Module 5 Assignment 1 LASA 2
Critiquing an Article
For more classes visit
www.snaptutorial.com
For this project, you will compose a researched response to Peter
Singer’s article ―America’s Shame.‖ This assignment allows you to
assess and defend the reasonableness of personal beliefs through critical
assessment of Singer’s arguments and the presentation of your own,
original arguments on the subject.
Review the following:
· Singer, P. (2009). America’s shame. The Chronicle of Higher
Education, 55(27), B6–B10. (EBSCO AN 37137370)
http://search.proquest.com.libproxy.edmc.edu/docview/214643086?
accountid=34899
Develop a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation summarizing the main
points of the article. Complete the following:
· Summarize the portions of Singer’s article you seek to
engage/critique.
· Using the tools of evaluation you have learned throughout the
course, create an original argument to Singer’s article that advances your
own thesis in light of Singer’s argument. Remember the nature of the
stance is not important; you can agree or disagree with any point Singer
makes within this article. The important thing is you construct a stance
that clearly engages a portion of Singer’s text.
· Support your argument with the use of original research. Use at
least three credible, academic resources to support your positions.
Develop an 8–10-slide presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint format. Be
sure to include two additional slides—one for the title and the other for
references. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the
following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M5_A1.ppt.
