The Spirit in Aromatherapy
Working with Intuition (Gill Farrer-
Halls, £11.99, singingdragon.com)
Knowing and
using your
intuition is
integral to
healing of any
kind, and this
informative and
useful book
focuses on the
importance
of intuition in
aromatherapy
blending,
essential and
base oil selection and bodywork. Gill Farrer-
Halls draws on her vast experience as a
practising aromatherapist to help readers
to deepen their practice. Gill guides novice
and experienced aromatherapists through
how to increase their intuitive awareness
of individual essential oils, and coaches
on how to use meditative techniques to
transform their work. She also shares
helpful tips on creating holistic blends for
clients and how to develop long-term client
relationships through intuitive practice.
The Massage Therapist’s Pocket
Book of Pathology (Su Fox,
£12.99, amazon.co.uk)
Designed to be an essential quick reference
guide for bodyworkers and anyone with a
keen interest in massage, from students to
long-term experienced practitioners, this
handy companion text outlines a wide range
of pathologies (the things that go wrong
with the tissues and workings of the body)
that massage
therapists may
encounter in
their daily work.
Understanding
these is vital for
practitioners,
and the book
explores how
to delve deeper
into the client’s
condition by
asking the right
questions,
which will inform decisions about treatment
and how massage therapists can safely
adapt their skills for each client.
Sleep Better with Natural
Therapies (Sharon Tay, £14.99,
singingdragon.com):
Most of us will have experienced problems
with dropping off, and staying asleep
at some time or other. Holistic medical
consultant Peter Smith’s “100% natural
sleep solution” is contained in this book,
which offers indispensable advice including
how sleep works; the psychological causes
of insomnia; how to practice good sleep
behaviours; how to use dietary supplements
to promote sleep and how to create the right
environment
for good sleep.
Whether you’re a
night owl, early
bird or serial
napper, this
book shows how
it is possible to
retrain the mind
to resist the
sleep inhibitors
and stress
responses that
prevent you from
settling down.

Happy Birthday
Each of us is like a flower, the type
of flower is dependent on what it
needs to help it grow.
We may look at our flower every
day and think it’s not growing -
actually it is...so although we think
we’re not moving forward really
we are!
The most beautiful flowers are al-
ways the ones that take their time,
and they are always the ones that
may seem like they’re not grow-
ing but one day we wake up and
discover a beautiful blossom!
We have many qualities that
make us rare and beautiful flowers;
sometimes we feel we are starved
of sunshine and water, so in those
times we need to find ourselves
again. So go find your watering can
and move yourself to the other side
of the garden in the sun, rebalance
and rejuvenate yourself. We are all
beautiful flowers.

REVENUEyour
W
HETHER you entered the
industry to help people,
to achieve greater health
knowledge yourself, or to make
money, one thing is for sure, if you want to run
a successful business you need cash flow to do
this. For a constant cash flow you need a steady
flow of paying clients.
Research suggests that 10% of complementary
and alternative medicine practitioners work on a
full-time basis, and 33% of this 10% are successful
and doing well financially within our business
models. Many practitioners I have spoken to admit
that they would like to become full time practising
professionals but due to the financial insecurities that
are linked to our profession have not yet dared to take
the plunge.
So what exactly is it that one in 300 of us is doing
that makes their business successful? Well firstly,
successful businesspeople know their market and
how to bring that market into their clinic. This can
be done in a variety of ways. It always surprises me
when new practitioners upload their website and
then sit back and wait for the phone to ring. You need
to actively be out there, interacting on social media,
making sure your website is at the top of Google,
letting your local market know you exist, creating
business relationships with local GPs, surgeries,
gyms, schools and businesses.
START WITH A PLAN - WHAT DO I NEED TO
EARN? HOW MANY CLIENTS DO I NEED?
Forecast your desired earnings and divide this
number by 45 weeks which equates to the actual
amount of working weeks allowing for sickness and
holiday. Calculate your average client session fee.
Divide your annual income forecast by this average
client spend. This will give you the total amount of
clients you need to see annually to achieve your
earnings target. Now divide that number by 45
weeks to give you how many per week on average
you need to see. For example:
£30,000 (desired earnings) divided by 45
weeks (actual working weeks) = £666.66
per week
Client session fee £85.00
£30,000 divided by £85.00 = 352.94
(353) clients per year needed to be seen to
achieve desired earnings
353 divided by 45 = 7.8 (8) clients a week.
A successful business needs
a healthy cash flow. Mark
Shields coaches us on how
to take positive action to keep
your finances flowing.

The Cam Coach BUSINESS
So you know that you need to build up a client
base of eight clients a week to hit your targeted
income of £30,000 per year. You can add lab
tests and supplements onto this to increase your
revenue.
Going through this process and forming a
written plan will focus your mind and give
you an overview of where you are heading.
Change to “We have a far greater chance of
succeeding with our plans if they are written
down. Therefore a business plan is key to any
business’s success. Do you have one?
ADOPT A PROFESSIONAL APPROACH
However small you think your business is, adopt
a professional approach and never compromise
your image or representation. Remember that
you are what you are perceived to be so make
sure that you have a professional website. This
is your advert to the outside world and gives
you an opportunity to reach your target market
directly. Research shows that 88% of clients find
a practitioner through the web and if you are not
online you are missing out a huge market.
When questioning practitioners about
websites I have found that generally they are
put off through a fear of the unknown. Some
are not technology minded and, therefore, shy
away from learning about how to set a website
up, so don’t or they ask someone else to do it for
them. This can be a dangerous game as there
are many companies and individuals out there
who will offer website design at a cost without
including optimisation or an editing facility for
you to make simple changes when necessary.
Equally, asking a friend to do one for you can
create difficulties when they do not stick to
deadlines.
When we initially started our business many
moons ago we kept costs low and used a really
great company called “Webhealer” (webhealer.
net). They offer a great basic package to set-up
a website - £50 plus from £10.00 per month
hosting fee. Call them on 0870 757 9878 (Be
sure to mention you read about them in Holistic
Therapist Magazine when you call).
Once you have established a regular customer
base then you can look at upgrading later on to
access more features or you could have a more
detailed website designed once you have some
profit behind you.
SORT OUT YOUR PAYMENT SYSTEMS
You need to be able to deal with all client
requirements and that includes the types of
payment options available to them. Credit card
payment is the most popular form of payment
and if you do not offer this, you can lose
credibility. Cardsave (cardsave.net) charge from
£15.00 per month (tel: 0844 209150). If you
work within a multi-discipline clinic setting
perhaps the reception can take card payments
on your behalf as your clients leave.
Another option is PayPal, which offers a
professional card reader for £49.99. There are
no hidden or monthly charges; you just pay
2.75% in charges of the payments you take.
Simple! Other ways for clients to pay you can
be by invoicing them giving them your bank
account details so that they can transfer funds
through internet banking by making BACS
payments.
Finally, a telephone landline displayed on a
website is far more professional and gives the
impression you are stable and located, so try to
avoid advertising a mobile number.
TARGET THE HEART OF YOUR MARKET
Set an advertising budget and ensure you stick
to it. A rule of thumb is to set your budget at
a maximum of 20% of turnover. You have to
speculate to accumulate.
After 10 years of researching and
experimenting with different advertising
strategies I have discovered the most successful
way to advertise is with Google Adwords. By
allocating a small budget and cleverly timing
your campaign you can turn the tap on to a
steady flow of enquiries whenever you want or
need to. It’s that simple.
So, as an example, start your campaign at
four o’clock every day. This will allow your
competitors’ budgets to have expired and you
will reach number one on Google at half the
normal price. In addition the evening is the
most popular viewing time so will get double the
viewings for half the cost.
These days you cannot ignore the power of
social media. Once again, to any technophobes,
do not be afraid! All social media platforms
offer step by step tutorials and “Help” areas
on their websites so setting up an account is
easy. Along with Google, social media is now
the most successful way to build your profile
and furthermore, it’s FREE. There are hundreds
of social media courses out there; some cost
money, some are free. We like Clare Jarratt
(clairejarratt.co.uk) she gives a host of social
media start up tips and mostly for free. Or
read my fellow columnist, Jonathan Pollinger’s
regular advice on social media in HTM.
OBTAINING REFERRALS
The best business is referred business from
your current client base. So, ensure you give
every new client a business card and/or leaflet,
as by leaving something visual with them they
can put it on the fridge or in their wallet or give
to a friend who needs it. Encourage them to
follow you on Twitter or Facebook and if they are
pleased with the results they achieve through
your clinic, ask them for a testimonial to use on
your website.
Another way of gaining referrals is to work
with another practitioner/company of another
discipline that would complement your client’s
programme. For example, a nutritional therapist
could refer her clients requiring exercise to
Pilates lessons, or a life coach or hypnotherapist
if they need some behavioural change work.
Both these disciplines could of course refer your
services vice versa. Also ask your local gym
if you could set up a discounted membership
to clients you refer to them; in return they
may allow you to run workshops for their
membership base.
CREATE YOUR OWN PR
Local businesses like to support local
businesses. Approach the local paper for
editorial, or the local radio to give advice on your
particular therapy. If you don’t ask you don’t get.
Approach the local gym to put up a poster of
what you do, or the local GP surgery or dentist.
Local community magazines are excellent.
They cost around £20.00 to advertise and reach
in excess of 1000 people all living and working
within a mile of you.
Finally, run free workshops. When you are
setting up your clinic this is something that
will help build your profile. By offering free
workshops you are able to introduce your
services to your local community/businesses.
You will also be able to collect email addresses
of your audience and create a database to
keep in contact with them, alerting them to
promotions, further workshops or events you
may be involved in.
So there are a few actions to get you started.
They are currently working for other therapists so
why shouldn’t they work for you?
Always remember - if you do what you’ve
always done, you’ll always get what you’ve
always got. So make some changes today by
taking some positive action.

T
HERE are
a huge
variety of
SEO (search
engine optimisation)
definitions out there,
but for the purposes of
this article we’ll assume
SEO is “the process of
improving the visibility of a brand’s web
presence in organic, ie unpaid, search
results”. SEO can help your website,
social networks and blogs appear near the
top of the search results.
Search engines crawl the internet using web
“spiders” to look for keywords which are then
stored in an index along with the website that
they are found on. People can then look for
words or combinations of words stored in the
index. Results are presented using an algorithm
or formula which looks for clues to give you the
results you want from millions of web pages.
Understanding this process is important as it
can help you improve your SEO.
Google’s algorithm relies on more than
200 unique signals that make it possible to
guess what you might be looking for. These
signals include things like keywords on your
website, how often you update your website
and backlinks - links from websites and social
networks to your website.
The above applies to natural or organic
searches but you can pay for your website to
be displayed as a sponsored result. On Google
Adwords, paid-for results are displayed above
and to the right of the organic search results.
You pay on either a Pay Per Click (PPC) or cost
per 1000 impressions (CPM).
It’s worth trying to obtain the coveted
no.1 position for your website in
search results, but getting your
website onto Page 1 of search results
also helps. The higher you rank, the
more people click on your website;
the lower you rank, the fewer clicks
and traffic your site will get.
Incorporate keywords - Ensure that you
include keywords in the title of your
website pages and in the first paragraph.
For example, if you’re an aromatherapist then
phrases such as ‘essential oils’ should be included.
You can find out which terms people use when
researching aromatherapy or any business
by using Google’s Keyword
Planner, which also makes
suggestions. But it’s
important not
to do overdo
it; a process
known as
keyword
stuffing is
frowned upon
by Google.
Update
content
regularly -
Providing fresh content on
your website regularly is great
for your visitors and Google likes
it too. Write news articles, blogs or
add photos. Make sure that your content is
relevant for your audience.
Encourage back links – Make
sure that you add your website
to local business directories and
if you run workshops and events add details
to event listings. Write articles that demonstrate
your expertise for other websites, eg holistic therapy
magazines (like this one!) and include your website
address. Note that some sites carry more ‘authority’
than others, with education and government websites
carrying the highest authority.
Get active on social media – Having
active social media profiles gives search
engines and therefore potential clients more
opportunities to find your brand. Facebook Pages,
Twitter Profiles, LinkedIn Profiles and Pages and
Google+ Profiles and Pages together with their content
all show up in search results. Ensure that you use
keywords and links to your website on your Profiles
and Pages as well as in your tweets and posts.
According to Google, 97% of people research
local businesses online, so it’s very important to pay
attention to your SEO, to ensure that your website is
found by as many potential clients as
possible.

You’ve heard that “content is king” online, but how does that generate
more clients for your business? Amanda Cook shows us how.
Create Content Your
Clients Will Love( Share)

I
t’s Monday morning -
time to update social
media - but you can’t
think of a single thing
to write! What could you say
that would be interesting? Is
anyone reading it anyway? If
you’ve done any social media
or content marketing for your
holistic business, I’m sure
you’ve hit this point at least
once (if not weekly!).
Content can be a photo, video, blog
post, social media update, list of
tips, a recipe and so on. The key is
that good content provides value on
its own. It’s not a sales pitch. Good
content is useful and/or entertaining,
and it’s easy to share.
Sharing is the sweet spot for
online marketing. When your
existing audience shares your
content with their networks you
reach more potential clients without
any extra effort. Plus, since the
content is shared by an existing
connection, it’s like you come with
a referral!
It’s not about
you!
It’s about your audience. Who is
your ideal potential client? What
are their biggest concerns? What
else do they need to know to get the
best from treatment, for example,
complementary lifestyle tips? If
your potential client thinks your
content is useful and relevant to
their lifestyle, you’ll have a devoted
follower who shares it with their
friends.
Start with the
basics
In most cases, your ideal client is
a beginner. I commonly see this
mistake with therapists after two
to three years in business. You
feel you’ve covered the basics, so
you start to write about advanced
topics. But your potential client
isn’t an expert - she’s a beginner -
and writing about advanced topics
is going to scare her away. Answer
common questions. Share simple
tips that will get results even for
beginners.
Make it
scannable
Many people are busy and don’t
have the patience to read a long
article. Do you readers a favour and
make your content easy to consume.
If you’re writing an article, make it
easy to scan, with bold subheadings
and bulletpoints. Imagine your
potential client reading on her mobile
phone during her commute - how
can you make it easy for her to
understand and keep reading?
Make it
actionable
Shareable content is about helping
your potential client get closer to her
desired result. Make it easy for her to
put the information in your article into
action by giving clear next steps.
Include an
image
It’s popular now to create content
that is only an image (for example,
a quote or recipe written on top
of a relevant image.) This type
of content is effective because it’s
quick to consume and easy to
share. If you’re writing an article
or blog post, include an image. It
catches your eye, sets the tone,
breaks up the text, and makes the
article more appealing when shared
on social media. Remember you
need to have the rights to use the
image. You can use your own
photos, or purchase images for use
on stock photography sites.
Keep a long list of potential content
topics, and brainstorm topics for 20
minutes using the five points above.
Then pick the one that seems the
most interesting to you, and create
it! It won’t be perfect, but it’s more
important to get your new content
out into the world and start getting
feedback (and sharing!)

Are
CLIENTSyour
draining you?Personal transformation
coach and trainer Dr
Lisa Turner explains how
to identify the clients
who are bad for you,
and what action to take.
Y
OU don’t have to have been
practising long before you have
the experience of looking at
your schedule see “that name”
on your client list today, and feel your heart
sink. Despite trying to dismiss the feeling
because you’re kind and compassionate; it
lingers, and keeps coming back.
Whether we like to admit it or not, we all
have clients we enjoy working with more
than others, so naturally the flip side is that
we will
have those other
clients that we don’t enjoy quite so much.
But does it have to be this way? How can
you spot them before it’s too late? And how can you
prevent it happening?
Signs that your client is
draining you:
1. A sinking feeling when they call or when you see
their name in the diary.
2. Feeling unusually tired after working with them,
beyond your usual post work feeling.
3. Finding yourself thinking about them outside of
their session times as they pop into your mind
randomly.
4. Feeling frustrated by their progress (or lack
thereof).
5. They are overly demanding, contacting you between
sessions requesting an immediate response.
6. They show up late, cancel at short notice or don’t
show up at all. This is an energy leak in your
business and has to be stopped.
What to look for
BEFORE you take
on that potential
problem client
It’s your right to work only with
the people you choose. Don’t
let finances or compassion
cause you to take on clients you
know are wrong for you. Watch
out for these warning signs:
1. They have had a LOT of other
therapies, but none has worked. This
is a big red flag. You don’t want to be the
next person on their list of people who failed to
solve their problem.
2. They “bad mouth” past therapists for failing to
help them.
3. “Victim thinking” - of course people need help
and get into situations that they probably couldn’t
have prevented. But are they stuck in blame and
judgment or are they making a true attempt to
move forward and heal?
4. They seem to be looking for a miracle.
5. They are unwilling to take responsibility for their
own health and happiness, and take no action to
change their lives.
How to prevent your clients
draining you
They’re not always easy to spot but there are some
steps you can take to prevent problem behaviour.
1. Have clear terms and conditions which explain
exactly what they can and can’t expect and in
what timescale. Get a lawyer to check it over.
2. Have clear boundaries. No it’s not ok for clients to
call or text you if it’s not part of the service. If you
want to offer this then do so as an extra “support
package” and charge for it. Even if no one takes
it you’re sending a clear message that you are not
on call 24/7.
3. Make it clear that they will need to take action and
responsibility for their healing. All change requires
action. Make sure they know this and agree to it,
and mention it in your terms and conditions or
contract.
4. Have a clear coaching contract which lays out
what is and isn’t included and what you can
each expect of each other, both in and out of the
sessions. For example it might make it clear that
they commit to do any tasking, and when they
can and can’t contact you.
Being a therapist is a wonderful career where you can
help people to turn their lives around, and with these
few steps you’ll find yourself working with great clients
who energise and inspire you. psycademy.co.uk

Susanna Terry’s speciality is powerful yet
gentle ‘light touch’ treatments to balance
both energy and structure for health and
freedom from pain
“
My business is called Light Touch Therapy Training,
and I’m based in Devon in Belstone, a small
picturesque village on Dartmoor National Park.
When I first started out as a holistic therapist I studied
homeopathy and then I added various holistic therapies
including Spinal Touch, Bio-Stress Release, Zero Balancing
and various beauty treatments to my skills.
My primary motivation for setting up my holistic therapy
business was to help people become and remain healthy in
a gentle but effective way, taking into account their mental,
emotional and physical well-being as a whole. Having
seen how much people suffer from health challenges and
how disruptive and ineffective some of the conventional
treatments are, I wanted to provide a highly energising
healing approach to my clients.
MY THERAPEUTIC TREATMENTS - I specialise in Spinal
Touch, a powerful but ‘light touch’ treatment for backache
and musculoskeletal problems. It is a holistic approach to
body-work which realigns posture and the whole organism
to the earth’s gravity. When treating my clients holistically, I
may add one or more of my other therapies to complement
the treatment.
Homeopathic remedies also play a prominent part in my
work. Homeopathy, with more than 2000 remedies of plant,
animal and mineral origin, is a medical tradition in its own
right. Unlike conventional drugs, homeopathic remedies
are free from side effects as they are precisely diluted. They
also they address emotional problems at the same time as
physical complaints.
My clients vary from the very young to the very old. Some
CASE STUDY
come to see me because they know how effective alternative
and complementary therapies are; others come because
somebody told them they felt better from the treatments.
After receiving a Spinal Touch treatment they often say that
they feel much ‘lighter’. The reason is that once they are
properly realigned to gravity all the functions and organs
of the body work more efficiently and effectively. Some
simply say: ‘This is magic, the pain disappeared
almost instantly!’
A WORD OF ADVICE - My
advice to holistic therapists is
to follow your intuition when
deciding to learn any healing
modality. There is of course
a difference between learning
the various therapies and setting
up a holistic therapy practice. A
holistic therapy business requires
advertising which may be either
purchased or free. Social media
can be an important free element
if it is done properly. Word of
mouth is one of the best ways
to make yourself known as an
effective practitioner but it may
take some time to have an effect.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE - I have trained as an online
marketing coach and a social media consultant in order to
promote the practices of other holistic therapists as well as
my own.
I shall continue my personal development through learning
new modalities and attending courses. Since 1997 I have
been training holistic therapists in ‘light touch ‘therapies
such as Spinal Touch and Bio-Stress Release. Most of my
course graduates have built thriving practices and I hope
to carry on helping people to incorporate Light Touch
Therapies in their work.”

18. Founder of Light Up Your Soul Therapies and
Training, Theresa Maddison, talks therapies,
training and teaching.
WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? - I’ve always been in
healthcare; I was a nurse originally, then I retrained in beauty
management and learned Reflexology in the second year
of my HND. I’ve been in the industry for 22 years, 18 as a
teacher, and I now run courses in Essex and the East Midlands.
I went into healing and holistic therapies because I didn’t think
a purely allopathic model of healthcare works. I wanted to help
people to understand their own well being and take control if it,
through learning it or using it to maintain their well being.
WHAT DO YOU SPECIALISE IN? - I specialise in energy
and vibrational treatments like Crystal, Colour therapy,
Reiki and Angel healing, where you work on the subtle
energetic bodies to restore balance and remove blockages. I
particularly like to help those that have had emotional trauma,
because everything begins as an energy imbalance and thus
using frequency catalysts like crystals, and specific healing
techniques can really shift cellular memory. However, I still love
aromatherapy, reflexology and all the other treatments I do.
My other speciality, which I also offer as a training course, is
hot stone reflexology and I have developed my own crystal
reflexology treatment which clients love. I’ll be teaching that
as well very soon.
WHAT ARE YOUR CLIENTS LIKE? - My clients come from
many walks of life; mums, teenagers, mainly women, but men
will try the treatments and if they see the results, they’ll be
loyal. I treat a lot of businesswomen who need some TLC. I’m
hoping to start working with servicemen and those in frontline
services as they often suffer from stress related conditions.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING
HOLISTIC THERAPISTS? - My advice to people wanting to
set up their own holistic therapy business is:
CASE STUDY
Have some savings behind you if possible.
Alternatively, cut down your hours at work to
spend time building up your business or build it
up at weekends.
Research your required baseline qualifications.
Make sure they are from an accredited
government recognised awarding body
like VTCT or BTEC , and make sure the
teacher is just that- a qualified
assessor and teacher who
at least an award in teaching
and lifelong learning.
Research your market!
How much are your
competitors charging?
Where do they advertise? Be
prepared to network and always get
testimonials from clients. Go on
workshops from HMRC if possible
and find a good bookkeeper!
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE
PLANS? - I’m still learning
and developing and still
want to learn so many things! I am
working towards having a bigger centre, which offers
nationally accredited qualifications, but not just holistic
and massage based. I think everyone should learn Reiki
for self-development and self-healing and as a therapist
it is essential to protect yourself and keep yourself well. I
want people to be able to learn more about spirituality and
energy, using their intuition and developing their potential
all under one roof. To me it’s obvious; Quantum physics
recognises everything as pure energy; the Chinese and
Indian cultures recognised this centuries ago. Western
medicine has to start embracing the concept that energy
blockage = disease. If energy flows well, you will be too!

attended a workshop about Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD)
by Sally Kay which was excellent and something we’re discussing
with the Hospice’s Lymphoedema Service.”
One of Jayne’s specialities, the ‘M’ Technique, was founded in
1998 by Dr Jane Buckle when she was working in critical care,
and is currently offered in 40 hospices across the UK. It is a
registered method of structured touch suitable for those too
fragile to receive massage, and it has a rapid and profound
relaxing effect.
“I trained in the technique in 2011, and was asked to become an
instructor in 2012,” says Jayne. “I now run courses at the Hospice
for multi-disciplinary colleagues, both internal and external,
across the palliative care sector.”
St Oswald’s provides specialist hospice care for adults, young
people and children from across the North East of England. The
hospice treats patients of all ages, with a diverse range of life-
limiting conditions.
“One patient I see on a weekly basis is constantly in and
out of hospital having tests and treatments and
she tells me her complementary therapy
at the Hospice makes her feel
‘like a normal person having
some pampering’,” says Jayne.
Jayne and the team also work
with carers, who can often neglect
themselves while looking after
others. “Carers often don’t have time
to think about themselves, and can feel
stressed, depressed and exhausted.
One carer told me she wished she
could ‘bottle the therapies and carry
them around with her so she could
dip into it when she needed a
boost’. It’s such a privilege to work
somewhere you can really make a
difference to someone’s comfort
and quality of life.”
St Oswald’s and other UK hospices are always looking for
volunteers to join their Complementary Therapy team.

A volunteering role at her local hospice
led Jayne Welch to a fulfilling career as a
complementary therapist
Where could volunteering
take you?
J
AYNE Welch’s path to becoming a holistic therapist began
when her children flew the nest and she found herself
wondering what was next: “When my children got older I
decided to go back to college; I chose to study aromatherapy
because I was interested in it but also because a few years
earlier my mum had died and she’d really benefited from
complementary therapy when she was ill. I’d wished I’d been able
to help her myself back then.”
Jayne started out by doing treatments from home, as well as
baby massage and yoga classes at local Sure Start centres. Then
she began volunteering at the St Oswald’s Hospice in Newcastle
Upon Tyne. “Although it was challenging, it was incredibly
fulfilling. When a paid role came up, I was eager to apply!”
Jayne now works as a part-time complementary therapist in the
Complementary Therapy team at St Oswald’s Hospice, providing
a range of treatments for patients.
“The range of therapies includes aromatherapy, hot stone
massage, Reiki, reflexology, Indian head massages, and most
recently we’ve started offering the ‘M’ Technique,” explains
Jayne. “The therapies are not used as an alternative to medical
care, but as a complement, to improve wellbeing, reduce stress
and anxiety, ease muscle tension and chronic pain, and provide a
distraction from pain and worries.”
The team works across both adult and children’s services, working
with each individual’s needs and the multi-disciplinary care team.
Jayne and her colleagues also provide complementary therapy
for patients’ carers, to give them some ‘me’ time and a break
from caring for their loved one. This generous soul also gives staff
appointments for treatments after work, as a staff benefit.
CPD is important to Jayne and it is clear that she loves her job
and learning new things: “I love to learn, and I love training
others, so in the future I would like to do lots more. Recently we

loved working as a kinesiologist, guiding others
on their journey to optimum health. I never had
treatments myself but didn’t feel I needed to. I must
be healthy – I’m talking about diet and lifestyle all
day, right? Maybe, but then I had a huge wake up call
and couldn’t take care of my own health needs. I didn’t
know where to turn.
I had a car accident which caused some permanent
damage, along with exacerbating a pre-existing
condition. The transformation from someone who
always took care of the needs of others to
experiencing chronic pain and immobility
was instantaneous. I couldn’t cope
with the dramatic change and,
as a result, became clinically
depressed and insular.
Having a structural problem
I couldn’t fix with my own
therapy was frustrating and
I stopped taking care of
myself. I ate foods I knew
to be inflammatory which
intensified my pain levels,
and didn’t carry out any of the
self-care techniques I taught to
others.
It took the kindness of another
therapist to say “look, let me give
you some treatments and see if I can
help.” Unconvinced but touched by the offer I
committed to a series of treatments and the difference
was phenomenal. I fell in love with therapy again, and
not just my therapy either. Letting someone else take
care of me motivated me to take care of myself too and
with dietary changes, meditation and other self-help
methods, emotionally I recovered enough to begin
to practice again, and the better I felt, the more my
business flourished.
Since then I make sure I regularly receive treatments as well
as give them. It can be easy as therapists to put the needs
of others first. We do what we do because we love to help;
to witness the change in clients throughout their time with
us is a real privilege. It is easy to ignore the signs that we
need to rest and take care of ourselves but we are not in the
right place to help others if we are not functioning in peak
condition - physically, emotionally and mentally.
If you find your own needs
are last on the list (if they are
on the list at all!) try the four
points below:
They’re not always easy to spot but there are some steps
you can take to prevent problem behaviour.
NURTURE YOURSELF ON A DAILY BASIS
- Exercise, meditate, read a book. Find something
that recharges your batteries. You can’t give if you
are emotionally drained.
SET BOUNDARIES - How often have you
scheduled a day off and someone will ask for a
treatment? Even if it’s a family or friend learn to say
no. You are deserving of your time.
FOLLOW YOUR OWN ADVICE - Do you tell
clients to take supplements, meditate, eat well,
stretch? Do you do the things yourself that you
recommend? If not, why not? If time is an issue see
point 2!
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU GAVE A
TREATMENT? When was the last time you
received a treatment? We have a natural tendency
to put others before ourselves but receiving
replenishes us spiritually as well as physically and
we can give more without becoming depleted.
As therapists it’s not easy to make the transition to being a client.
There can be a feeling of failure at being a client, a sense of
disappointment dawning - ‘is my therapy not enough?’ Louise
Jensen explores how to learn to receive as well as give..

Foot Reader Jane Sheehan helps you to answer the
question that many self-employed people ask over the
Christmas holidays: to work or not to work?
T
hat is the question. Christmas and
New Year are both busy seasons
and quiet seasons depending
on your business type. Some
people see the bookings start to dwindle as
their clients redirect their attention to office
parties, Christmas shopping and seasonal
preparations.
So there’s the thing. Do you see the
seasonal dip and decide that you too will
close your business so that you can enjoy the
jollities? Or do you examine your potential
clients’ changing needs and amend your
marketing and product offering accordingly?
And it’s not just Christmas either. The same
question applies to Mother’s Day, Father’s Day,
Valentine’s Day, Easter, Summer Holidays,
Bank Holidays – the list goes on.
Workingthe holiday
season
BUSINESS Working On Bank Holidays
23. 23holistic therapist 2014holistictherapistmagazine.com
Grab a pen and write
down what you could
offer to suit each of these
periods. For example:
gift vouchers tailored to the season
block bookings with a discount
treatments tailored to the season such as
tanning products for summer; Mother and
daughter packages for Mother’s day;
eyebrow and ear trims for Father’s Day
De-stressing treatments for the post party
season or pre-party pamper sessions
Also think about the common ailments for
the seasons such as hay fever, colds/flu,
chilblains, stress, hangovers, dieting –
have you a course of treatment or remedy
that would appeal?
It’s not just about giving away a discount either.
If you would like a client to try something new,
why not offer a fifteen minute taster of another
treatment over and above the treatment they
have purchased. In this way they can sample
something new and may just be converted to
give you an additional income stream.
The longer you think, the more creative your
ideas. Look at what other practitioners are
offering. Should you be offering the same?
Could you improve upon their offer? My
hairdresser changes her drinks menu at
Christmas from the usual tea/coffee offering to
include alcohol-free mulled wine and hot lemon
and honey.
Grab your diary and work out when and how
to introduce these offers to your clients. Note
some magazines have deadlines three months in
advance of publication so it’s not too early to start
planning your Christmas marketing in August!
Are you finding it hard to get yourself into the
right mood to let your creative juices flow?
The Beach Boys were reported to have a tray
of sand under their desk when writing their
hits, so they could remove their shoes, plunge
their feet into the sand and get in the mood!
I’m not suggesting you have a tray of snow
under your desk, but you could try playing
Christmas hits, and lighting a cinnamon
candle to get you in the mood.
Could you cross-fertilize your ideas with those
from other industries? There
used to be a hamper scheme
where you could put aside
money each month to eventually
receive a Christmas Hamper
with all the goodies you would
need for the perfect Christmas
meals. Could you do something
similar but with your treatments
or remedies?
For example, my brother
runs a fish and chip shop. He
occasionally puts a coupon in the
local paper offering a free cup of tea
with any fish supper on production
of the voucher. He finds people
forget to bring the voucher but visit his shop
as a result of seeing it. It builds awareness
and traffic to his place. Once they find him,
his intention is to retain them as regular
customers. Could you do the same sort of
thing?
One of the advantages of running promotions
over a bank holiday is that the majority of
people are off work and thus it gives you
a much bigger target audience to attract to
your business. Running a taster day or an
open day on a Bank Holiday may be just the
push your potential client needs to become a
lifelong user of your services.
BUT REMEMBER - no matter how passionate
you are about your business, the flip side of
that passion is tiredness. You can’t maintain
that passion when you are tired. Yet after a
brief rest, the tiredness goes and you are back,
full-steam ahead, driven by your passion. Ask
yourself; would your business benefit more
by you embracing the holiday season to have
a holiday of your own, or would it benefit
from you embracing the benefits of the above
mentioned holiday promotions?
Only you know the answer to this. Choose
with care, and whatever you decide, may you
have a jolly season ahead of you!

BUSINESS Build Your Business
Your “elevator pitch”
should be:
I
F you are just starting out in your therapy
practice it can seem insurmountable to
even get to the point where you have
2 clients coming to you a week. Yet
the good news is that if you have achieved
this you have already done the hardest part!
Believe me, those two clients will grow to 20
before you know it.
Here are my 12 top tips for transforming your
practice from 2 to 20 clients a week. Although
any of these actions will bring you more clients by
themselves, remember that the more marketing irons
you put in the fire, the more results you will get.
Step 1 - WORK ON YOUR “ELEVATOR
PITCH”: Your elevator pitch is the “script”
for how you will talk about your skills when
someone asks the simple question;
“So what do you do?”
Every social or work occasion is an
opportunity to gain more clients. Let’s face
it, most people out there are in some kind
of physical or emotional pain and in need of
your services.
- Short - no more than 60 seconds.
(hence the name - you should be
able to deliver your speech before the
metaphorical elevator lands on the
designated floor).
- Designed to let your listener know what
“you can do for them”.
- Natural – keep practising until it is!
- Delivered with a call to action:
Offer to book your listener in there and
then if they are in need of your services;
or offer to call the next day to book them
in; or give them a leaflet and ask them
to let people know about you as you are
building your practice.
Make sure you talk passionately about what you
do with everyone you come into contact with.
Always tailor your conversation to your client’s
needs - think of the question “What do you do?”
as really asking “What can you do for me?”
Step 2 - REBOOK YOUR 2 CLIENTS:
Yes I know – it’s simple but often forgotten.
Building a thriving practice is totally attainable with the
right attitude and tools. Rachel Fairweather shows you
how to use 12 easy steps to create the practice you want.

No one needs a one- off treatment. Work
on the Jing “fix in six” model of booking in
clients who are in pain once a week for up
to six weeks. As their pain decreases you
can increase the time between treatments
eventually moving your client on to a once-a-
month maintenance schedule.
Step 3 - WORK YOUR 2 CLIENTS:
The 2 clients you have a week are presumably
very happy with your services. In turn,
those clients have their own networks of
friends, relative and work colleagues who
would benefit from your treatments. So as
your personal trainer might say - “work it
baby”- in other words maximise those 2 client
relationships as much as you can.
Sometimes this can be as simple as giving
your existing clients some cards or leaflets and
asking them to let their networks know about
you. You could also incentivise referrals by
asking them the names of 6 friends they think
would benefit from a half price massage. You
could also ask for testimonials for your website.
Step 4 - WAGGLE YOUR NETWORKS:
I once asked a friend how I could find
someone with particular expertise and she
replied “waggle your networks”. This is a great
term for the concept of starting with those
people you are already linked into. Every
friend, relative or colleague should know you
are in the business of looking for clients. What
communities are you a part of? Do you have a
full time job? Start with your work colleagues.
Parent? Tell the other parents at the school
gates. Social media is also a great way of
spreading the word via existing links.
Step 5 - NETWORK WITH THE
“GATEKEEPERS”: A gatekeeper is the
term I use to describe a key person who has
access to lots of people who might need your
services. Examples might be the local yoga
teacher, organiser of the running club or your
hairdresser. The best way of networking with
the gatekeeper is to give them a great massage
for free. Let them know what you can do (by
your “elevator pitch”) and how you can help all
the people they talk to.
Step 6 - DO A FREE DAY’S MASSAGE
AT A LOCAL BUSINESS: Call a large local
business and offer their employees a day of
your time for free. Offer 10 minute massage
appointments over clothes on a table or on-site
chair. Take your diary and make sure you get
people’s email addresses and phone numbers.
Follow up the day with calls or emails and
book people in for longer treatments.
Step 7 - DO A DEAL: Good deals
are wonderful for attracting people to your
business. This could be a half price or very
cheap massage. Make sure your deals
are time limited, one-off only and have a
deadline. So for example you could offer a
£10 massage treatment to get people through
the door. In your advertising make it clear that
this offer is for the first treatment only and
only available until the end of the month. Use
that £10 treatment to give your client a great
massage and re-book them (at full price!).
Step 8 - GET ON TWITTER: Follow
some local businesses or yoga class or Pilates
teachers. Strike up a conversation with them
via Twitter. Retweet them and they will retweet
you. Suggest writing a guest blog for their
website or a local site - ideally one with a
big following of people who might need your
services.
Step 9 - WORK ON YOUR SEO: Make
sure you are working on your SEO rankings
by ensuring your website content is optimized
with key words and articles relevant to your
potential clients.
Step 10 - WRITE AN ARTICLE
FOR THE LOCAL NEWSPAPER OR
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE: This can be just
as effective or more than the guest blog!
Step 11 - GO TO WHERE THE
AUDIENCE IS: Are there existing email or
advertising networks you can plug into? I
started my practice when I was a social worker
by advertising on the in-house intranet which
reached thousands of council workers.
Step 12 - DO AT LEAST ONE THING
IN THIS ARTICLE: Overwhelm is often the
problem when starting your own business –
there are so many things to do, but where do
you start? Pick the easiest thing on this list.
And just do it! n

“My business is called SIRPA (Stress Illness
Recovery Practitioners Association) and I am
based in West Yorkshire. I run monthly clinics
which help aid recovery from chronic pain and
other persistent or recurring conditions. I run
my clinics in central London, plus work with
patients worldwide via Skype. I also run courses
for health professionals interested in integrating
our approach into their own work in Yorkshire,
London and Birmingham.
I
am a physiotherapist by trade, then I began to train in
alternative therapies, including reflexology, ‘adapted
reflextherapy in spinal pain’, acupuncture and NST. This
opened me up to the idea that the area pain was felt was not
necessarily the origin of the pain and to explore what else
might be going on.
I left the NHS in 2005 due to the excellent results I was
seeing using my skills for musculoskeletal pain. I then found
that the more time (and privacy) I was able to provide for
my patients, the better the therapeutic alliance and my
outcomes improved. Since recognising that the majority
of chronic pain is stress-induced and not due to a physical
problem (as numerous studies conclude) I now no longer use
hands-on therapies, but enable people to recover from their
pain and regain their lives by helping them identify the links
and triggers of their pain and use simple, self-empowering,
strategies to deal with them.
In 2007 I came across the concept on which my whole
approach is now based, which was pioneered by John E Sarno
MD, Professor of Rehabilitation at the New York University
School of Medicine. As there were no specialists in this field
in the UK or Europe, I visited Dr Sarno and set up my own
programme here in the UK while developing strong peer
support with a number of US specialists.
CASE STUDY
SIRPA was set up in 2010 to enable me to more effectively
raise the profile of this work to people who could benefit from
it, by training other health professionals (in both physical and
mental health) in the first ever course worldwide in this field.
My clients are mostly men and women aged between 20 and
55 years old, simply because they are more likely to be
able to be computer literate and use our online
programme and Skype.
My work is very rewarding
clinically, but my advice to
anyone wishing to set up
their own therapy business is
that it is important to recognise
that learning about marketing
and running a business is very
important in being able to make a
success of it financially.
WHAT’S NEXT? - I have recently
published the first UK-written
book in our field, ‘Chronic Pain:
your key to recovery’, which
provides a self-empowering
approach enabling many
people to recover independently. On
26th April 2015 we will be having our first UK/European
conference at the Royal Society of Medicine and we have a
number of the recognised specialists attending from the US
to speak.
I continue to develop SIRPA which will soon include a bursary
for people unable to afford private treatment. I am also
keen to continue my own personal development clinically
by integrating new self-empowering strategies to further
improve my patients’ outcomes.

players. Anyone who suffers from acute or chronic neck, shoulder
and back pain comes to me as ‘LT Therapy’ delivers rapid results
after one treatment.
I’d advise anyone wanting to set up their own holistic therapy
business to go for it! Do your research and costings, as these
are the keys to successin any business. Understand your target
market and ensure you have lots of passion, drive and enthusiasm
when developing your USP (unique selling point). People are
becoming increasingly aware of the importance of looking after
their wellbeing, so holistic therapies will always be in demand.
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? - I am currently writing my
second book, a follow up to my first ‘The Muscle Whisperer-The
Keys To Unlocking Your Back Pain’ available on Amazon and
Kindle. It looks in depth at how we are sabotaging our physical
bodies through our imprisoned minds. It also covers how we
can look younger when we change our mental state and release
our physical pain. I’m also launching my new CPD ‘LT Therapy’
training course in mid-September 2014 so that ‘LT Therapy’ can
be accessed by anyone in the UK as well as overseas.
I also intend to work closely with charities
such as ‘Rethink Mental Illness’ and
‘Mind’. Through my work, I see
hundreds of clients suffering
from stress created by the
demanding pressures of daily life.
I am currently taking appointment
bookings four weeks in advance for
both my London and Bradford clinics.
If not treated, stress will develop into
mental health conditions such as
anxiety disorders and depression.
In the UK, there is a stigma and
discrimination around mental
illness, which the ‘Time to
Change’ campaign wants to stop.
If I can help change this negative
attitude to a more positive
approach, then I feel my work
has made a difference on a
significant scale.

“
I had a severe car accident in 1987, and was told I may
never walk again. Being told this while recovering drove
me to research alternative methods that worked with
healing the mind and body. Once I had successfully discovered
how powerful the mind was in aiding recovery, I wanted to help
others find a natural solution to resolving their pain and so my
journey in holistic medicine began.
I am now a qualified holistic practitioner and I’ve been working
with Eastern and Western therapies for over 20 years. I have
specialised in several disciplines of massage including Sports,
Indian head, Myofascial Release, Aromatherapy, Deep Tissue,
and Acupressure.
WHAT IS LT THERAPY? - ‘Langellotti Tri-Therapy’ or ‘LT Therapy’
is a three-way treatment using an advanced massage technique,
volcanic heat and ice marble that releases emotional and physical
stress and trauma held in the neck, shoulder and back muscles.
The stones are formed from a South American Volcano and
tumbled a thousand times to reach their smooth state. Only
volcanic stone can be used as it retains the 62 degrees heat
required throughout the treatment, a key part in restoring
flexibility to the muscles. Whilst manipulating the muscle, I use
the heat to detox and release negative emotions held within.
The client instantly feels the pain diminishing. The gentle yet
powerful action of this natural element removes toxins and lactic
acid quickly, which can be harmful to the muscles. The ice marble
from Carrara in Tuscany is a natural anti-inflammatory, which
allows the muscle to recover rapidly, restoring flexibility, mobility
and texture.
I treat a variety of people, from Hollywood ‘royalty’ such as Liv
Tyler, to housewives, bankers, teachers, cabin crew, and sports

promotions
SPELLBOUND: Offer holistic flower
spells to your clients, send them via
email or perhaps give copies with
some flower essence as a gift for clients booking
a series of treatments. There are some great
books that share the holistic healing benefits
of flowers and flower essences, including Tess
Whitehurst’s The Magic of Flowers.
TRICK OR TREAT: Use a hollowed-
out pumpkin, or a bowl, preferably
black so it gives the appearance of
a cauldron, and fill it with lots of folded up
notes with tricks or treats written on them.
Let all customers pick a ‘Trick or Treat’. Add
some tricks, for example, ‘Boo! No treat this
time’, but add more treats, as an incentive,
for example, ‘Treat a friend to a free mini
treatment when you book one at full price in
October and November’.
IT’S A SCREAM: Have a laugh and
ask your clients to write their best
Halloween joke, with their contact
details written on the back. Pop all of the
jokes in a free prize draw and offer the prize of
a mini treatment.
BOO! DISPLAYS: Many treatment
rooms will have a plastic skeleton
hanging around, so give it pride of
place in your window or entrance. You could
place a poster or sign in its hands offering 20%
off all treatments booked in October. You could
also carve out your logo or business name in a
pumpkin and instead of adding
a candle, fill it with business
cards or discount vouchers.
As always put an expiry
date on any promotions!
You could even have a
person dress up and stand
still in your window, and
move quickly or ‘boo!’ members of the public.
Most people are good sports and intrigued, as
long as you are not terrifying passers-by and it
is done with light-hearted intention! Of course if
they get a discounted voucher too.
FORGET YOUR FEARS: This is
a great time to offer discounts on
therapies and treatments that aim to
eradicate people’s fears and phobias, so if you
work in The Mind Detox Method, or hypnosis,
Reiki, NLP, or other such modalities, then it
will raise more awareness for your
services.
BEWITCHED: Contact
a reputable tarot reader
to offer free
five-minute readings
to clients – they are likely to do
this for a small fee, or as a promotion
for their own business. You could give
them a free treatment as a thank you.
RECIPES: Email your clients
with Halloween offers and
include seasonal recipes,
such as warm apple cider, or pumpkin
pie, perhaps a creamy pumpkin soup,
or garlic pasta or bread.
CANDY BAGS: You
could have some paper
candy bags printed with
your logo for clients to give to their
children, or maybe organic cotton
tote bags are within your budget
– your client is certain to re-use it,
which means free advertising for
your business.
SPOOKY PARTNERS: Team
up with a costume shop, hair
salon or restaurant to offer mutual promotional
freebies or prizes. This is a great way to help
local businesses help you.
HALLOWEEN PACKAGES:
Promote your offers in
advance so you get bookings
from regular clients, as well as attracting new
customers. It is very important to have catchy
promotional names – here are some examples
to start your creative juices flowing: ‘Dracula’s
Bride’; ‘Twilight Treatments for Two’; ‘A massage
from the other side’; ‘Boo-tastic Offer’.

F you want to get your holistic health
business in the press then it’s essential
that you craft a great press release. Start
with a great headline. Journalists and
news rooms are busy so you need a headline
that will attract immediate attention and
encourage them to read on.
Use an active voice throughout your press
release and write in the third person. Cover the
five W’s in your first paragraph:
Go on to give additional details. Try to include
quotes from relevant parties; this could be you,
a customer or anyone else involved with the
story. Depending on the topic it may also be
useful to include some facts and figures as this
will give additional credibility to your story, but
do make it clear whether this is from your own
personal research or a published study.
Include some emotion and human interest
in your story. We all love to hear about
other people so this will help to engage the
journalists. As holistic therapists you must have
many stories and testimonials to share of clients
who love the service you provide and how you
make them feel.
Where relevant refer to the benefits of the
products or service as this will help journalists
to see why readers would be interested in the
story. Remember though that it must not sound
like an advertisement - there must be a story
element to your press release.
You must give a professional impression so
ensure all spelling and grammar is correct. Do a
spelling and grammar check on your document.
It might also help to read what you’ve written out
loud or to get a friend or colleague to proofread it.
Ideally a press release should be no more
than one side of A4, with an additional
notes page. This ‘Notes for Editors’ page can
include contact information and links to your
website and social media pages. Set out some
background information here too. This might be

further information about you or your
company and its philosophy, number
of employees, why you decided
to set up the business and other
supplementary details.
The whole object is to make things
as simple as possible to keep the
journalist on your side. Most will lose
interest if there is too much research
and investigation to do as they are
usually on tight deadlines.
Always include some good
quality images that could be used to
illustrate the piece. The newspaper
or magazine may decide to take
their own but it’s very helpful and
always appreciated if you offer one
or two images so that if they choose
they can just use your press release
and photos straight away. Some
of my press releases have been
used word for word in newspapers
and published with one of the
photographs I sent within days.
Even a brilliantly written press
release is unlikely to attract attention
if it is not sent to the correct place.
Consider the publications that your
target audience is likely to read. Look
through copies of these and observe
the type of stories they feature and
the language used. Make your press
release conform to this style. Notice
which journalists are named at the
top of articles which are similar to
your topic. Approach those contacts.
Make sure that you’re sending your
press release to the right person;
there is little point sending a business
story to a journalist who specialises
in entertainment or politics.
It is usually relatively easy to find
contact details on the internet but if
you struggle with this, just telephone
the publication to ask for them. It
is a good idea to build up your own
media address book of contacts
relevant to your industry although
you should always check that these
are current.
The right approach
Some journalists prefer approaches
by telephone while others like to
receive things by email. It is just a
case of trying or asking to discover
which they prefer. Once you receive
contact from a journalist try to
nurture the relationship. Ask them
if there’s any other assistance you
can provide and offer to supply other
pieces. Always respond to their
enquiries promptly and hopefully
you will soon become a credible and
reliable source and find that they are
contacting you to ask for content.

32. vegetables, which help to reduce the impact of the pro-inflammatory foods,
inflammation is likely to occur.
Nightshade vegetables such as potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and
aubergines: Nightshade vegetables contain alkaloids which can
contribute to joint pain by causing excess loss of calcium from
bone and excessive depositing of calcium in the soft tissue.
Food intolerances and leaky gut syndrome link: leaky gut syndrome is
increased permeability of this lining, and it alters the molecules which
prime your immune system for action by allowing molecules that don’t
ordinarily pass through the gut lining to get access to your immune system,
causing inflammation. Two-thirds of your immune system lies within in the
wall of the small intestine. The gut lining gets damaged by eating allergenic
foods such as gluten, wheat and dairy, if you have intolerances to those
foods, as they are not digested fully.
Balancing your blood sugar, following the anti-inflammatory diet
and addressing food intolerances and leaky gut issue is the ideal first
approach to back pain.
CARINA PETTER – OSTEOPATHY
Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and
treatment based on the good functioning of
the musculoskeletal system. As osteopaths,
we are concerned with any condition where
there is dysfunction leading to restriction
of movement and balance, although we are
probably best known for treating back pain. This
covers a wide range of examples, from the chronic
pain of degeneration and arthritis, through the acute sudden onsets with
trauma and sports injuries, to the growing pains of a developing child.
Osteopathy works to integrate the musculoskeletal system with all the body
systems as alteration in the function here can lead to changes in the function
of the whole body. As we age we lose the ability to adapt and
compensate for these restrictions resulting from earlier injuries
and traumas. Consequently, apparently quite minor strains
can have lasting effects such as changes in posture and how
we move and sit.
Changes can then become habit and so lead on to
structural alterations which give us our idiosyncratic posture
and gait. Osteopaths will not only treat the symptoms
of the pain but will look for the underlying causes
and attempt to restore function here to help
prevent recurrence of the pain.
Research at the British School of
Osteopathy has shown that spinal
inflexibility can cause lower back
pain which may explain why
manual therapy can ease pain by
improving mobility and muscle
function. Manual therapy,
including osteopathy, has been
recognised by NICE for the treatment
of lower back pain. haleclinic.com

KAORI MURPHY - NUTRITION
Back pain can have many underlying causes
such as structural issues (problems in the
discs, misalignment of the spine, muscular
tensions, and so on); nutritional imbalances
(pro-inflammatory diet and lifestyle), and
emotional connections (we store
trauma in the cells of the body
– the cellular memory theory).
When dealing with back pain nutritionally,
addressing the factors that contribute to inflammation
in the body is vital. For example, all of the following
are inflammatory factors:
Blood sugar imbalance: As blood sugar
levels rise, the pancreas produces
insulin, a hormone that prompts cells
to absorb blood sugar for energy or storage.
Insulin increases inflammation in the body.
Pro-inflammatory foods: In
addition to foods that causes the
blood sugar spike, there are
pro-inflammatory food items such as red
meat, dairy products and hydrogenated
fats and trans fats. If you are also lacking
in anti-inflammatory foods in your diet such
as oily fish and omega 3 rich nuts and seeds
and antioxidant rich foods, for example, fresh fruits and

Your body is constantly adapting to stay alive. How does the mind-
body connection work to ensure your survival?
WHY YOUR BODY IS NOT
against you!
Ask Sandy YOU YOUR HEALTH
W
HAT your mind believes,
perceives and experiences
has the potential to be
sent to your entire body
and cause physical responses. Due to the
scientifically proven mind-body connection,
symptoms most people consider to be
physical problems can in fact be your
body’s best attempt at staying alive.
Survival is the primary goal of the human
body. I don’t believe it is designed to just break,
malfunction or get “sick” without good reason.
Instead it is constantly doing everything in its
power to adapt to, and survive, the inner and
outer conditions it is experiencing during daily
life. This happens because your body follows the
orders given to it by your mind. More specifically,
the individual cells that make up your body are so
intelligent they are constantly adjusting themselves
to the environment in which they think they exist.
It works like this: your mind interprets
whatever is happening in the external
environment and then your brain
releases chemical
messengers of
your thoughts
(neuropeptides)
into the blood,
which tell the cells
what adjustments
they need to make
in order to best
survive the perceived environment.
So, in the same way you would adapt
to a change in the weather when it
rains by putting a rain jacket on, your
individual cells adapt to their chemical climate and
the different chemical messengers they are flooded
with on a daily basis.
Your mind–body is communicating this way now.
The millions of cells that make up your body are
listening to your mind and responding accordingly.
This means that if you are, for example, being
loving, your heart is quite literally experiencing
love. If you feel unsupported, your knees can feel it
physically. Or if you’re feeling fear, your entire body
is on physical red alert, with the fight-or-flight-freeze
response engaged. Physical symptoms are often
highly symbolic of the issues at the mind level: the
body does a brilliant job of speaking the mind.
Consider how your body may be speaking your
mind through the creation of your current physical
condition(s). Just for now, let go of any medical
labels you may have been given, and instead,
explore the physical condition from a fresh
perspective. Very useful questions to consider are:
What is happening within my
body, i.e. what is my body
actually doing?
How might the physical conditions
be an attempt to adapt and/or
survive my past or current life
circumstances?
If the physical condition was trying
to send a symbolic message to
me, what might it be saying?
If the physical condition was a
negative emotion, what emotion
would it be?
How might my body be mirroring
my life?
This is an awareness-raising exercise; giving you
the opportunity to explore whether there may be
any mind-based causes to your physical condition.
If you think you’ve found a possible mental or
emotional cause, then there are many techniques
available that can help including the Mind Detox
Method, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and
Matrix Reimprinting.
It makes sense to take a holistic mind and body
approach to healing. In my experience of using
the Mind Detox Method with hundreds of people
internationally, when you get peace with the past
and reduce chronic stress, your body is given
permission to adapt again – allowing you to move
on, free from the physical condition, for good.

I
would like to introduce you to the
work of three doctors I had the
privilege of filming and interviewing
recently at the ‘Yes to Life’ Seminar
in London. This ground-breaking event
explored the unsung options open for
people who are battling breast cancer. The
seminar looked at taking an integrative
approach to breast cancer care and using
complementary therapies for supporting
health through breast cancer, alongside
using standard treatments.
The keynote speaker was Dr Francisco Contreras
of the Mexican Cancer Hospital, who spoke about
integrative approaches to breast cancer practised at
the Oasis of Hope Hospital. Dr Contreras is Consultant
Oncologist and a Medical Director of the Oasis, a
60 bed facility in Mexico, where he treats people
holistically, combining standard treatments such as
surgery and chemotherapy with nutritional and other
‘natural’ methods. This ‘integrative’ approach places
great emphasis on supporting the body and restoring
full immune function.
He spoke of the principles and practises of his work
and detailed the use some very interesting intravenous
