This week you will explore how the end of WWII brought about a new rivalry between the
US and the Soviet Union for world dominance that became known as the Cold War. This
struggle would overshadow eight presidencies until its end in the 1980s. In much the same
way Americans today fear terrorism, so did Americans in past decades fear Communism.
Consider McCarthyism, the execution of the Rosenbergs, duck-and-cover drills, bomb
shelters, Cold War propaganda, and even science-fiction movies.
What was life like for the average American in the 1950s as they experienced the
Cold War?
What comparisons do you see to howAmericans experience terrorism today?
What is similar? What is different?

The 1960s and 1970s saw the formation of significant protest and social movements
including the Civil Rights movement, Mexican American farm worker unionization, the
American Indian Movement (AIM), anti-war protests, the LGBT movement, the second
wave of feminism, and the environmental movement. It was and is a unique moment in
American history, a moment that still reverberates in modern America.
Consider one or more of the protest/social movements of the 1960s or 1970s.
What was the movement’s key objectives?
Were these objectives achieved? Why or why not?
Consider the same group today. What is the status of that group? Is it still active
and in what ways? How have the objectives stayed the same or changed?
What lasting effect did the movement have on American culture and/or society?

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation.
This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.
Due Thursday
Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:
The Vietnam War convinced many Americans that the government could not be trusted to
tell the truth. Students who protested against the war at Kent State were targeted and shot
by the National Guard. Nixon promised that he was “not a crook,” but then White House
3. tapes revealed his involvement in the cover-up and forced his resignation. These, along
with other incidents, shook the confidence in their government of many Americans.
Against this backdrop:
Do you think American distrust in national leaders was a given? Why or why not?
Compare and contrast the idealism of the early 1960s with the growing cynicism of
the 1970s. Include at least one of the following in your response: Watergate, Nixon’s
pardon, the Camp David Accords, or the Iranian Hostage situation.
Has any presidential administration since Nixon been able to restore trust in the

HST 175 Wk 4 Discussion - Reagans' Economic Policies
Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation.
This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.
Due Thursday
Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:
This week, we explore some of the positive and negative aspects of President Ronald
Reagan’s economic policies. Reaganomics remains controversial even today, with some
arguing that the dramatic increase of the national debt under Reagan cannot be overcome
with his more positive achievements of job growth and a construction boom. Furthermore,
cheap gasoline, cheap appliances, and cheap credit stimulated a “Yuppie” culture of
unrestricted greed and consumer spending.
Consider the broad effects of President Regan’s economic policies.
How were the wealthy affected? The middle class? The working class?
How were women affected, particularly in terms of working outside the home?
How were unions affected?
4. Would you agree or disagree that materialism, public image, and economic
prosperity still drive the American vision of success? Why or why not? Provide specific
examples in your response.

HST 175 Wk 5 Discussion - America Moving Forward
Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation.
This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.
Due Thursday
Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:
The 21st century has been an extraordinary time of change, in both positive and negative
ways. Americans now live under the threat of terror. Our society is characterized by
economic inequality, a decline in social services, the rise of mammoth corporations, and
the slow-motion crisis of climate change. At the same time, there has been much good as
people have responded to the uncertainty. Average Americans continually help victims of
natural disasters, advocate for the vulnerable and the marginalized, volunteer time, and
give money to charities.
In what ways has the United States changed in the last two decades since 9/11?
Generally speaking, do you think the United States has learned from history? Are
we progressing as a nation?
As Americans, are we pessimistic or optimistic about the future? Explore at least
one of the following in your response: the creation of TSA and DHS, airplane safety
improvements, deportations of illegal immigrants/Dream Act, the gun control fight,
marriage equality, Occupy Wall Street, minimum wage demands.
