3. Consumption
● Often consumed through inhalation (smoking
and vaping)
● Also consumed through ingestion (edibles and
drinks)
4. Marijuana Effects
(Short-term)
● Psychoactive plant (affects the brain and
body)
● Common effects
1) Euphoria and sense of relaxation
2) Increased appetite
3) Altered perception of time

5. ● May hinder brain development
○ Study on teens who heavily smoked marijuana into adulthood
found a drop in IQ score
■ Lost an average of 8 IQ points between ages 13 and 38
● May cause respiratory issues
○ Smoke irritates the lungs, which may lead to daily coughing,
phlegm, and lung infections
■ However, no studies found that marijuana use is linked to an
increased chance for lung cancer.
● May lead to heart issues
○ Can increase heart rate and blood pressure immediately after use
■ Increased risk of stroke, heart disease, and other vascular
diseases

6. ● According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health,
46% of U.S. adults have used marijuana before
○ 18% (48.2 million people) used within the past year

7. ● According to the Monitoring the Future study on substance use
amongst college students and non-college adults:
○ 2015: 38% reported using marijuana in past year
○ 2020: 44% reported using marijuana in past year

For this project, I would like to focus on marijuana use among college students. This will look at if marijuana use increased or decreased amongst college students during the pandemic, as well as the effects of use on their academic performance.
So in its most basic form…

But those are the short-term effect
As much as I’d like to make a prezi advocating for marijuana and its benefits, let’s be real,
There are a lot risks and negative effects of marijuana use, just like any drug out there
So that will be my focus today…
