Reflective Essay: Lessons Learned
This is assignment was one of the first writing assignments I have written since graduating high
school in 2005. While writing this essay I learned several things about myself and become
extremely excited when I learned I had earned 8 out of 10 points after submitting this assignment.
This first part of writing this essay was to pick a topic to write about. I decided to choose acne for
the simple reason when I was growing up I had acne but finally grew out of it. After I decide on
the topic I had to gather the information for the essay itself which was not that easy. I had to gather
the information from different websites and was also able to find celebrates that revealed their
stories on the Proactiv website. Once I gathered the information required for the assignment I
began writing which was difficult at first but once I was able to get started it seemed to become
easier. The only thing I would change about my paper if given the chance would be to organize
the paper a little bit better. I would also try to apply different words that are not used in everyday
writing, this might have helped me with my grade however using larger words could also hurt my
paper if I did not use them correctly....show more content...
I noticed my work cited page was not on its own page after I had already submitted the
assignment. I also had several different mistakes that I did not noticed after submitting the paper
but once I was given guidance by my Instructor I believe I was able to correct the work cited page
correctly to meet MLA standards. I know that with the information and guidance I have learned
during this assignment I feel that I will be able to correctly write a successful essay assignment
during my college career along with my career as a Law Enforcement

Essay about My Business Idea
My Business Idea
In my coursework I intend to start my own business. I will devise my own business plan which
outlines my business proposal and the key aspects, during this I will need to seek good business
advice on the necessary steps I will have to make. As I go through the coursework I will show
evidence, examples and explain how businesses are set up, what types of businesses there are and
their similarities, the kind of targets businesses set for themselves and also the different objectives of
different stakeholders. For my business I plan to sell toys and other game products that educate
young children under the age of 11.
Starting up a business is difficult and risky. Anyone setting up needs to consider:

Finance
=======
No businesses can be set up without finance. Most people who start their own business
underestimate the amount of money they will need to set up. They are often UNCAPITALISED
and this causes problems as the business expands. Some businesses have the potential to be highly
profitable but fail because they run out of cash at a crucial early stage in the life of the business. So
it is very important to work out how much money is needed to start the business and to identify
where the money will come from.
Identifying the sources of help
===============================
Most new businesses don not survive for more than three years of trading. However, their chance of
success is much greater if those setting up the business have received help from experts before the
launch. Many new businesses turn to Business Link or to their local
TEC. They can identify any grants, loans or benefits that are available from government or from
bodies like the Prince's Trust. They can also organise training in setting up small businesses that is
so often vital to the survival of the business.

Reflection On My English 101 Experience
Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your
mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The
truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in
the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can
explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses.
Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before
taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and
unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I
struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to
the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class
that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the
whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for
navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I
have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in
English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the

My Schedule During The Week Essay
Well, my schedule during the week is usually focused at school or at home. My weeks are never
smooth and I usually have a lot of homework because I am taking 18 units. I specifically handle all
my day to day things by the first study and do my homework before I go play a video game, sleep,
or eat. My days feel very structured and I usually tried to prepare and do all my homework at least 1
week ahead. That way I have a bit more time to study for a test. Most of the time, I get a homework
assignment out of nowhere, which always forces me to go with the flow. I organize my day to day
by a to do list, a pile, and by section. I always eat breakfast during 8:00 A.M. to 9 A.M., I eat lunch
at 1 P.M. to 2 P.M. and I would eat my dinner usually at

Those classes are usually the longest time–consuming in my week because they are about 3 hours
long. On the Saturday and Sunday, most of my time is to study for the exam or do homework
because my class gives me a huge amount of homework. I usually play games for about 30 mins
on randomly on my schedule or when I have a random free time. I sleep about 4 to 5 hours a day
in the week, but on the weekend, I sleep about 7 to 9 hours.
There are three examples from the text that I plan to use in my future or now to help me combat
my time management in the day to day task. First is to know how much time I am using for
studying and increasing that time if needed. Second is to use a system to plan and set priorities.
Lastly, it for me to stay motivated to follow my plan and avoid procrastination. The three strategies I
would use in the textbook would do the most important study first, use a calendar planner and daily
to–do list, and do the easier task first. I choose those three strategies for my time management
because time is the key to be successful. The most important to study first would help me seek a
question that I might not know; therefore, I could ask for assistance if I get stuck in my study. For
me to use a calendar planner would help me schedule my time more efficiently. For me to use a
daily to–do list will help me knock off what I need to accomplish by the end of my day. Doing the
easier task first is important because it

My experience throughout English 101 Essay
My Experience throughout English 101
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest
potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic
requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my
professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for
some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me
with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101
taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was
required.
In the...show more content...
Also, by revising my essays I felt that I had the chance of writing with a broader sense.
Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember
having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was
looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading
critically. "A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;"
(Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand
what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by
my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to
convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays.
Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish
writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to
write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one
type of audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several
other audiences. However, after writing several unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my
style of writing was too narrow and boring. In this realization of writing I discovered that what
matters the most is pleasing your audience (many not one), and

Mother to Mother The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the book "Mother
to Mother" by Sindiwe Magona. Specifically, it will critically analyze the book. The book "Mother
to Mother" is a touching and elegant story of race relations and misunderstanding in South Africa.
The author bases her book on a true incident, but looks at it from the eyes of a mother who loves
her son but recognizes his inadequacies. It is a devastating look at apartheid, violence, and anger in
a society long split between black and white. Well–written with emotion and pathos, it is a book that
discovers the difficulties of reconciliation and continuing with life after the death of a loved one.

Clearly, she should have known the dangers of what she was doing, rather than looking at her
situation only idealistically. Mandisa, the mother in the story, does not make excuses for her son,
she knows his act was reprehensible, but she does understand his young life has been filled with
despair, betrayal, and difficulty. She notes, "Understand the people among whom he has lived all
his life. Nothing my son does surprises me any more. Not after that first unbelievable shock, his
implanting himself inside me; unreasonably and totally destroying the me I was. The me I would
have become" (Magona). Mandisa gave birth to her son when she was only fifteen, and it changed
her life, just as it would change the young white girl's life eventually. In an interview about the
book, author Magona elaborates: It is a well–known fact that children of children are at high risk of
not finishing school. Mandisa is a perfect example of the success of apartheid––she is the perfect
product of that system––her talent is stillborn; so is that of her children. Society will never benefit
from the gifts they brought to the world. I firmly believe no child is born without potential. Thus, by
neglecting the young, we deny ourselves great blessings and

English 101 Made Me a Better Writer
Everyone on the planet has a goal set in life, but only a handful attempt to improve to obtain their
goal by studying the subject their goal is in. In my English class, English 101 this quarter I was
astonished by how much I had progressed as a writer sharpening my writing skills and also
learned a lot about writing that I hadn't learned before. In my writing portfolio for this quarter I
had to write an autobiography essay, a research essay, and this reflection essay to develop my
writing skills better. The writing assignments were fun to do because it challenged me to work on
essays of different styles that were new to me. The essay assignments helped me grow as a better
writer that gave me the self–confidence and skills to take on the world on my own. During the
beginning of the English 101 when we began the writing process: I thought at first that we spent
too much time on our essays but I soon realized how important it was spending time on the essays
to improve them . The revisions that my teacher and classmates made on my essays were truly
helpful for me because it allowed me to better my writing. For every week in the entire course we
went over the MLA formatting process, annotating, citing within the essay, and how to make the
paper flow better. I had the most troubles in this quarter when I started writing some of my essays
for my portfolio because I didn't have a clue how to start them at first. After a while of brainstorming

exclusion is a motivating factor for Olive to turn to deviance. However, she isn 't the only

Essay on The Russian and Ukrainian Conflict
Conflict occurs when there is disagreement among individuals, groups, communities, and countries.
There is a risk to their need, interests or concerns as a result of a disagreement. This is a condition
in which people receive a threat such as physical, emotional, political, status and so on. On the basis
of their values, culture, beliefs, experience, and gender they filter their perceptions. It is possible to
recognize new opportunities by transforming conflict into a creative learning experience. It is very

There are many factors involved in the conflict. The conflict that is rising between Ukraine and
Russia is due to the rejection of the single economic deal with the European Union regarding an

acceptable for the people and their country so people start to protest against their President. The
economic factor is one of the reasons for the conflict. Crimea is very popular in its moderate
climate. This helps to attract the tourist and Ukrainians can easily make their good economic
condition. Similarly, it is easy to cultivate wheat, corn, and sunflowers. There is no crisis of water.
In Crimea, chemical plants and iron ore is mined. According to UKr Ago Consult, 1.6 million tons

is holding power in this conflict situation by sending their troops to Ukraine which result loss of
control of Crimea by Ukraine. All the Crimean is in support of Russia. Council of Minister of
Crimea is dissolved. Russia will be benefitting from keeping the conflict going. They can increase
their economic growth in Ukraine.

Stress in the Workplace Essay
Stress in the workplace
Stress in the workplace has become one of the increasingly popular topics of discussion over the
last couple of decades. It has become a major concern among various organizations creating an
impact on the management and operations of the organization. This paper will give a detailed
definition of what stress in the workplace is and the most common causes of stress amongst both
employers and employees. In the midst of investigating the causes of stress, I will give an outline of
what can be done to manage the stress by not only the individual but also by the employers
themselves.
I will also mention the effects of stress to an individual, which can be categorized as short–term
effects both psychological and...show more content...
In the United States, the American Institute of Stress (AIS) has estimated that 40% of the worker
turnover is due to stress and the cost of stress in the workplace has been estimated to be over
$300 billion per year. However, the ability of employers to lower the rate of stress in the workplace
has shown to improve the employee's quality of work and their health (Lee 36).
Causes of stress in the workplace
There are a variety of different causes of stress in the workplace and an ability to identify these as
an employer is important because it will help in knowing how to deal with and correct any
problems arising from it. Most of the stresses are caused when the demands at work become
extreme or excessive. Many of these demands are a direct result of technological advances that have
made work processes easier but on the other hand, require employees to do more tasks. Current
technology demands the workers to constantly perform near peak levels, be competitive and be
cognizant of technological breakthroughs. In some circumstances, the organization fails to inform
the workers about changes in the business or the technology they are using in their systems which
can cause tension and uncertainty. Because of this, the worker can feel a constant fear of losing their
position if they do not work efficiently and understand the new changes in the organization.
Another cause of stress is a change in the workplace environment. As an

The Power of Language Essay examples
The Power of Language Language plays an important role in communication by bringing people
together and enriching their relationships. Language can also alienate those who do not speak it
properly, or at all, from those who do. The essays, Mother Tongue, by Amy Tan, best known for
her book, The Joy Luck Club, and Se Habla Espanol, by Tanya Barrientos, delve into the many
powers that language holds. These essays reflect how by not speaking a language in proper form
and by not speaking a language at all, affects the lives of the subjects of the stories. People who can
speak a certain language, but only in 'broken' form, are generally looked down upon by native
language speakers. In her writing, Mother Tongue, Amy Tan writes about her

According to Barrientos, "To me, speaking Spanish translated into being poor. It meant waiting

condescending smile from the guidance counselor when you said you planned on becoming a
lawyer or a doctor" (561). They are not respected in a lot of communities, they live dirty, and they
have bad jobs. These stereotypes are reasons why Barrientos did not want to be called Mexican
and never wanted to learn Spanish. If diversity had been celebrated when Barrientos was a child,
as it is celebrated and honored now, she would have grown up speaking Spanish and being proud of
her heritage. Children are very impressionable and tend to take on others' opinions as their own, but
as they grow older, they develop a greater understanding and perspective of the way things are and
the way they should be. As adults, both Tan and Barrientos learned to accept and embrace the
languages that previously embarrassed them. Barrientos immersed herself in her Mexican heritage
and enrolled in many Spanish classes. With each enrollment, she faced yet another stereotype that
came with being of Mexican ethnicity; her instructors thought she should already know Spanish
since she was Latina. Barrientos is now determined to learn her native language. Tan has learned to

Grit is a predictor of academic, professional, and personal success. Grit can be defined as strength

any venture, as it gives someone an advantage in overcoming the inevitable obstacles they will face.

I had no experience as a runner nor did I have the form. This did not phase me however. That year
I promised myself to push through all the six mile runs, sore legs, gnarly blisters, and at times,
lack of oxygen. At every meet and speed workout practice I pushed myself further and further. I
set a goal every time I kicked off from the starting line and never let myself get discouraged when
I failed. By my senior year, I was the fourth fastest runner on varsity. That year our varsity team
won the district meet, which qualified us to run in the 2016 state meet in Oregon. The
transformation over the years were evident. My determination to accomplish my goal of
becoming a faster runner was complete. If I had simply just given up that first day of practice, I
wouldn't have ran along side of the fastest runners in Oregon or have met the multitude of people
that are now my closest friends. Having a goal sets one up for a challenge, whether it being
physically or mentally, goals keep us active and thinking in more ways than one. Still, if someone
has self–control, confidence, and a goal, they are still not complete. Growth mindset is the cone to
an ice cream. It is the foundation of what I think a successful person is. Without it one couldn't use
the characteristics mentioned above in more ways than one. Someone with a growth mindset believe
that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work, brains and talent
are just the starting point.

numerous amount of things I know I can do on a computer like listen to music, get on the internet,

it is only for a little bit, and then I am back to typing. In the long run I can get the assignment done

correct person for the position they have open. You have to make sure that you actually want this
job, it's suited to your skills and that you will perform well in the given workspace. Always
include why you think the you're the right candidate for the job; be confident enough to state
your opinion to your employer. Allowing the employer to see how confident your desire is for
this position will make them see how well you will work; they'll want a person that can work
comfortably in that job. Always mention what you could bring to the workplace; how you could
be an asset. Again, mention how your transferable skills can be put to use to benefit the company
that you have applied to work for. Showing the employer how much they could benefit by hiring
you is what will make you a more desirable choice compared to your competitors, this is your
opportunity to show what you're capable of. Always have the confidence to state why you think you
deserve this job and what you have to offer. The job market is a competitive place, volunteering

Writing Is Easy By Steve Martin Summary
The essay "Writing is Easy", by Steve Martin, is a hysterical essay that is comical in a way that I
don't think the author intended. I think the essay is funny mainly because there is a part that is
ironic for me that I can relate to. Although there is other parts in the essay that could be humorous
as well, I couldn't get over one certain section of it. The funniest segment of the story is, "Go to an
already published novel and find a sentence that you absolutely adore. Copy it down in your
manuscript. Usually, that sentence will lead you to another sentence, and pretty soon your own
ideas will start to flow. If they don't, copy down the next sentence in the novel. You can safely use
up to three sentences of someone else's work – unless you're

Lessons Learned: Reflecting on My First College Essay

  • 1. Reflective Essay: Lessons Learned This is assignment was one of the first writing assignments I have written since graduating high school in 2005. While writing this essay I learned several things about myself and become extremely excited when I learned I had earned 8 out of 10 points after submitting this assignment. This first part of writing this essay was to pick a topic to write about. I decided to choose acne for the simple reason when I was growing up I had acne but finally grew out of it. After I decide on the topic I had to gather the information for the essay itself which was not that easy. I had to gather the information from different websites and was also able to find celebrates that revealed their stories on the Proactiv website. Once I gathered the information required for the assignment I began writing which was difficult at first but once I was able to get started it seemed to become easier. The only thing I would change about my paper if given the chance would be to organize the paper a little bit better. I would also try to apply different words that are not used in everyday writing, this might have helped me with my grade however using larger words could also hurt my paper if I did not use them correctly....show more content... I noticed my work cited page was not on its own page after I had already submitted the assignment. I also had several different mistakes that I did not noticed after submitting the paper but once I was given guidance by my Instructor I believe I was able to correct the work cited page correctly to meet MLA standards. I know that with the information and guidance I have learned during this assignment I feel that I will be able to correctly write a successful essay assignment during my college career along with my career as a Law Enforcement Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay about My Business Idea My Business Idea In my coursework I intend to start my own business. I will devise my own business plan which outlines my business proposal and the key aspects, during this I will need to seek good business advice on the necessary steps I will have to make. As I go through the coursework I will show evidence, examples and explain how businesses are set up, what types of businesses there are and their similarities, the kind of targets businesses set for themselves and also the different objectives of different stakeholders. For my business I plan to sell toys and other game products that educate young children under the age of 11. Starting up a business is difficult and risky. Finance ======= No businesses can be set up without finance. Most people who start their own business underestimate the amount of money they will need to set up. They are often UNCAPITALISED and this causes problems as the business expands. Some businesses have the potential to be highly profitable but fail because they run out of cash at a crucial early stage in the life of the business. So it is very important to work out how much money is needed to start the business and to identify where the money will come from. Identifying the sources of help =============================== Most new businesses don not survive for more than three years of trading. However, their chance of success is much greater if those setting up the business have received help from experts before the launch. Many new businesses turn to Business Link or to their local TEC. They can identify any grants, loans or benefits that are available from government or from bodies like the Prince's Trust. They can also organise training in setting up small businesses that is so often vital to the survival of the business. The business plan ================= Drawing up a business plan is very important. The business plan sets out how the business is to be

  • 4. Reflection On My English 101 Experience Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses. Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 6. My Schedule During The Week Essay Well, my schedule during the week is usually focused at school or at home. My weeks are never smooth and I usually have a lot of homework because I am taking 18 units. I specifically handle all my day to day things by the first study and do my homework before I go play a video game, sleep, or eat. My days feel very structured and I usually tried to prepare and do all my homework at least 1 week ahead. That way I have a bit more time to study for a test. Most of the time, I get a homework assignment out of nowhere, which always forces me to go with the flow. I organize my day to day by a to do list, a pile, and by section. Those classes are usually the longest time–consuming in my week because they are about 3 hours long. On the Saturday and Sunday, most of my time is to study for the exam or do homework because my class gives me a huge amount of homework. I usually play games for about 30 mins on randomly on my schedule or when I have a random free time. I sleep about 4 to 5 hours a day in the week, but on the weekend, I sleep about 7 to 9 hours. There are three examples from the text that I plan to use in my future or now to help me combat my time management in the day to day task. First is to know how much time I am using for studying and increasing that time if needed. Second is to use a system to plan and set priorities. Lastly, it for me to stay motivated to follow my plan and avoid procrastination. The three strategies I would use in the textbook would do the most important study first, use a calendar planner and daily to–do list, and do the easier task first. I choose those three strategies for my time management because time is the key to be successful. The most important to study first would help me seek a question that I might not know; therefore, I could ask for assistance if I get stuck in my study. • 7. My experience throughout English 101 Essay My Experience throughout English 101 As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. Also, by revising my essays I felt that I had the chance of writing with a broader sense. Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading critically. "A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;" (Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays. Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one type of audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several other audiences. However, after writing several unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my style of writing was too narrow and boring. In this realization of writing I discovered that what matters the most is pleasing your audience (many not one), and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The book "Mother to Mother" is a touching and elegant story of race relations and misunderstanding in South Africa. The author bases her book on a true incident, but looks at it from the eyes of a mother who loves her son but recognizes his inadequacies. It is a devastating look at apartheid, violence, and anger in a society long split between black and white. Mandisa, the mother in the story, does not make excuses for her son, she knows his act was reprehensible, but she does understand his young life has been filled with despair, betrayal, and difficulty. She notes, "Understand the people among whom he has lived all his life. Nothing my son does surprises me any more. Not after that first unbelievable shock, his implanting himself inside me; unreasonably and totally destroying the me I was. The me I would have become" (Magona). Mandisa gave birth to her son when she was only fifteen, and it changed her life, just as it would change the young white girl's life eventually. In an interview about the book, author Magona elaborates: It is a well–known fact that children of children are at high risk of not finishing school. Mandisa is a perfect example of the success of apartheid––she is the perfect product of that system––her talent is stillborn; so is that of her children. Society will never benefit from the gifts they brought to the world. I firmly believe no child is born without potential. In my English class, English 101 this quarter I was astonished by how much I had progressed as a writer sharpening my writing skills and also learned a lot about writing that I hadn't learned before. In my writing portfolio for this quarter I had to write an autobiography essay, a research essay, and this reflection essay to develop my writing skills better. The writing assignments were fun to do because it challenged me to work on essays of different styles that were new to me. The essay assignments helped me grow as a better writer that gave me the self–confidence and skills to take on the world on my own. During the beginning of the English 101 when we began the writing process: I thought at first that we spent too much time on our essays but I soon realized how important it was spending time on the essays to improve them . The revisions that my teacher and classmates made on my essays were truly helpful for me because it allowed me to better my writing. For every week in the entire course we went over the MLA formatting process, annotating, citing within the essay, and how to make the paper flow better. I had the most troubles in this quarter when I started writing some of my essays for my portfolio because I didn't have a clue how to start them at first. Olive quickly gains popularity when most of the student body witnesses, from the other side of the door, her having sex at a party with a boy from school. Little does everyone know that it is all a ruse to get them to think that Brandon, her fake sex partner, is not gay in hopes that this very public display of sexual activity will prevent daily beatings at school and it works! (Perry et al., 2011) Being an openly gay student in high school, Brandon is subjected to torment, discrimination and marginalisation. Consistent deviance often leads to marginalisation, and gender deviance is a prime example. Brandon was beat up at school and rejected by friends. Gay individuals have long been marginalised by not receiving equal rights by law, and are habitually marginalised by the general public due to homosexuality being considered gender deviance. Taywaditep 's (2001) study suggested that due to the marginalisation gay boys received throughout their childhood and adolescence, many began to appear more gender–conforming towards adulthood to avoid marginalisation. The essays, Mother Tongue, by Amy Tan, best known for her book, The Joy Luck Club, and Se Habla Espanol, by Tanya Barrientos, delve into the many powers that language holds. These essays reflect how by not speaking a language in proper form and by not speaking a language at all, affects the lives of the subjects of the stories. According to Barrientos, "To me, speaking Spanish translated into being poor. It meant waiting tables and cleaning hotel rooms. It meant being left off the cheerleading squad and receiving a condescending smile from the guidance counselor when you said you planned on becoming a lawyer or a doctor" (561). They are not respected in a lot of communities, they live dirty, and they have bad jobs. These stereotypes are reasons why Barrientos did not want to be called Mexican and never wanted to learn Spanish. If diversity had been celebrated when Barrientos was a child, as it is celebrated and honored now, she would have grown up speaking Spanish and being proud of her heritage. Children are very impressionable and tend to take on others' opinions as their own, but as they grow older, they develop a greater understanding and perspective of the way things are and the way they should be. As adults, both Tan and Barrientos learned to accept and embrace the languages that previously embarrassed them. Barrientos immersed herself in her Mexican heritage and enrolled in many Spanish classes. With each enrollment, she faced yet another stereotype that came with being of Mexican ethnicity; her instructors thought she should already know Spanish since she was Latina. That year I promised myself to push through all the six mile runs, sore legs, gnarly blisters, and at times, lack of oxygen. At every meet and speed workout practice I pushed myself further and further. I set a goal every time I kicked off from the starting line and never let myself get discouraged when I failed. By my senior year, I was the fourth fastest runner on varsity. That year our varsity team won the district meet, which qualified us to run in the 2016 state meet in Oregon. The transformation over the years were evident. My determination to accomplish my goal of becoming a faster runner was complete. If I had simply just given up that first day of practice, I wouldn't have ran along side of the fastest runners in Oregon or have met the multitude of people that are now my closest friends. Having a goal sets one up for a challenge, whether it being physically or mentally, goals keep us active and thinking in more ways than one. Still, if someone has self–control, confidence, and a goal, they are still not complete. Growth mindset is the cone to an ice cream. It is the foundation of what I think a successful person is. Without it one couldn't use the characteristics mentioned above in more ways than one. Someone with a growth mindset believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work, brains and talent are just the starting point. Through my years in school I became literate in these two categories. I was and still am not interested in writing, or reading books in my spare time. The only writing I have ever done is for school. Writing just does not interest me, and the only reading I do out of class is reading about sports in magazines, or reading the news, or looking at web pages. I have only read a couple of books on my own, 95% of all the books I have read have been for school. The reason for not writing out of class is probably attributed to the fact that I am a very impatient person, and I have a short attention span. The way it helps me out is if I'm starting to get bored typing a paper I don't have to leave the computer I could go on the internet and look at ESPN for a couple of minutes and after I check out last nights scores I can go back to writing my paper. Because of my computer literacy there are a numerous amount of things I know I can do on a computer like listen to music, get on the internet, check e–mail, watch a movie, talk to a friend, etc. It might take my attention away from typing but it is only for a little bit, and then I am back to typing. In the long run I can get the assignment done faster than just sitting in one spot with no distractions around because I will eventually step away and start doing something else, then someone might call me to go some where and I will forget about the paper and leave. I myself am more of a "hands–on" type of learner; I would rather see demonstrations on what I need to do and be told why it was done that way, and the reason for it. Some subjects don't need to be taught with the hands–on approach. But now since I am in college the responsibility between the teachers and myself has shifted, I now have to seek out the information instead of the teacher's hand feeding it to me. One of my strengths is Restorative, which means that I like to solve problems. It applies to my style of learning because if I don't understand something I do all I can to understand it. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal, narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them.
