These are problems we encounter very often! Luckily for us, it seems we are very capable of dealing with them. But are we really as good as we think we are in doing this? In dealing with our problems, we often focus on symptoms, not the problem itself. Does that really help solving our problems? Does that help us reaching project goals? Often not. Often, while doing this, we make our problems even bigger. This presentation will teach you a different way of interpreting and solving problems: In this presentation you will learn how to solve problems without solving them! Unclear documentation a problem? The Democratization of SEO
How much time and money do we collectively burn by fixing the same kinds of basic, "binary," well-defined things over and over again (e.g., meta tags, 404s, URLs, etc), when we could be teaching others throughout our organizations not to break them in the first place?
As long as we "own" technical SEO, there's no reason (for example) for the average developer to learn it or care — so they keep making the same mistakes. We proclaim that others are doing things wrong, but by doing so we only reinforce the line between our skills and theirs. We need to start giving away bits of the SEO discipline, and technical SEO is the easiest piece for us to stop owning.
It's time for more democratization, education, collaboration, and investment in open-source projects so we can fix things once, rather than a million times.

“TX to prevent “shelfware”: Understanding the tester’s experience of automation and tools” (75 mins)
There is a taken-for-granted assumption in the testing industry that many software testing tools become “shelfware” (that is, they are purchased but not used) because they are hard to implement and use. If there is a problem with shelfware, this raises questions, for example: Is this because the tools are flawed, and don’t give the testers the support and information they need? Or is it because the testers need to become more technical and “step up” to the requirements of the tools?
These questions matter because testing, and the automation of test activities, is time consuming, difficult to do, and expensive, but heavily relied on by teams and organisations. Maybe, if the User eXpereince (UX) for tools was improved this could help with the implementation and usage of the tools. Perhaps we should consider not just the functional and technical aspects of the product but also emotional responses including trust and credibility, making a product meaningful and pleasant to use, and measures of the efficiency and effectiveness with which people can carry out their tasks.
Good automation tools should help us make good decisions about the SUT and maximise the value of the limited time we have, to deliver software products to market. Poor automation tools may delay decision making, increase the likelihood of errors of judgement, and frustrate both engineers and managers.
Once activities have been automated and industrialised, people are still required to operate the automation, or even over-ride it if it malfunctions. Some evidence (for example quoted in “The Glass Cage” by Nicholas Carr) suggests that people may become over-reliant and over-trusting of automation and not notice when it goes wrong. What then is the best UX for test tools? One that provides as easy an experience for the tester as possible, or one that maximises their decision making and alertness? And, can both those qualities be delivered in one interface?
The talk draws on Isabel’s practical experience in industry, as well as research and study with Julian Harty, Stuart Reid, Dorothy Graham, Nadine Raes and others. Isabel is embarking on a PhD study to research this matter in more depth. Isabel hopes to provoke feedback and discussion during the presentation.

Why you Shouldnt Automated But You Will Anyway

Are Your Tests Well-Travelled? Thoughts About Test Coverage
This document summarizes a presentation on test coverage given by Dorothy Graham. It uses an analogy of travel to different locations to explain what test coverage means and some caveats. Coverage refers to the relationship between tests and the parts of a system being tested, but achieving 100% coverage does not mean everything is tested. There are four caveats discussed: coverage only measures one aspect of testing, a single test can achieve coverage, coverage does not indicate quality, and it only applies to the existing system not missing pieces. The key recommendation is to ask "coverage of what?" when the term is used rather than assuming more coverage is always better.
Growing a Company Test Community: Roles and Paths for Testers
Over the past three years, our company’s test team has grown from three lonesome testers to a community of nine – with more planned. Since we don’t see testers as “click monkeys”, but as valuable and integrated project members who bring a specific skill set to the table, it’s important for us to choose testers well and to train them in various areas so that they can contribute, grow and see their own career path within testing.
To structure to our internal tester training program, we have been developing role descriptions, education paths and career options for our testers, which I’d like to share with you in this webinar.

At WSTS 2024, Alon Stern explored the topic of parametric holdover and explained how recent research findings can be implemented in real-world PNT networks to achieve 100 nanoseconds of accuracy for up to 100 days.
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
