What are big data in the contacts of energy & utilities, and how/where can the utilities find value in the data. In this C-level presentation we discussed the three prime areas: grid operations, smart metering and asset & workforce management. A section on cognitive computing for utilities have been omitted from the presentation due to confidentiality - but I tell you - it is mind-blowing perspectives on how IBM Watson will help utilities plan and optimize their operations in the near future!

Three Steps for Reducing Total Cost of Ownership in Pumping SystemsSchneider Electric
Electricity usage costs have become an increasing fraction of the total cost of ownership (TCO) for industrial pumping systems. In fact, energy cost represents 40% of the TCO of a typical pump. It is possible to reduce the electrical consumption by at least 30% through appropriate energy management practices while reducing the maintenance cost. This paper explains how to reduce TCO with a limited investment.

Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.

factor in all parameters
…to compare multiple technologies,
strategies & permutations
…to make operational and commercial
sense of available options
…to provide investment clarity and
post installation verification
…that can adapt and model change on

What effect will adding
CHP have to your
energy mix & strategy

…these & many other
questions can be solved
using GridMAP
9. The power of GridMAP
GridMap is designed to help site developers,
managers and investors analyse existing (or
projected) energy demand and model different
potential developments & strategies.
Once a site demand profile is established (or
simulated) you can model the addition of solar PV
systems, wind turbines, CHP, energy storage,
differing energy strategies, PPAs, demand side
response, load shifting, tariff changes and other
energy related opportunities. This is done
whilst factoring in any Grid limitations or critical load
issues.
Model generation, storage & strategy
10. In addition to modelling new developments
you can forward plan and adapt your energy
strategy to new regulatory requirements,
changing tariffs, or new market developments.
Adapting to Change
Multiple Scenario Analysis
GridMap enables you to compare multiple
possibilities and outcomes, to simultaneously
study many permutations. From these studies
you can optimise any system developments,
and best adapt current ones in line with client
priorities.
In order to assess five sizes of PV
with five sizes of battery & three
energy strategies GridMAP will run
all seventy-five permutations
These are then accessible online,
can be ordered by key indicators,
and a full set of interactive reports
is available for each permutation
11. Consultants, M&E Engineers
Add new services, or increase the profitability of services
offered, by using GridMAP to model and optimise a wide
range of energy scenarios. Access extremity detailed
reporting, including investor grade finical modelling. Run
due-diligence studies, verify post installation operations,
provide well supported & evidenced proposals.
Facility & Energy Managers
Increase visibility on energy demand & related charges.
Model & optimise energy related strategies. Assess adding
new technologies. Validate & compare information received.
Verify post installation performance. Track and monitor
multiple projects in one interface. Assess and model the
effect of potential changes ahead of time.
Manufacturers, Distributors & Installers
Empower your sales channel with GridMAP to design,
optimise, and clearly present projects, proposals and business
case analysis. Support your proposals with detailed study and
analytics. Add renewables and energy storage to already
complex operational scenarios with ease. Offer post-
installation monitoring & verification. View all studies in a
central interface, and offer client portals as appropriate.

modelling & analytics capabilities
21. Our Process Data Sharing
Before any study can be done we need some
information. The scope of data required will
depend on the nature and complexity of the study
to be undertaken.
Our analyst will work with you to verify what
information is needed and how it can be sourced.
If not available we may be able to help through
profiling existing templates, or by implementing
monitoring for a time.
Once received Argand will run a data integrity
analysis to ensure everything provided is suitable
and complete.
Common Data Sets
• Half-hourly demand data
• Heat profiles (for CHP)
• Solar or other generation information
• Storage technologies to be studied
• Cost parameters of district heating systems
• Energy tariffs and/or PPA arrangements
• Inflation &/or other financial assumptions
• Sources of income to be factored
• Financial structuring for rates of return studies
22. Running the Study
Once the necessary information has been attained
and the scope of the study has been agreed
Argand commence building the study model.
We then run all the permutations to be studied.
Presenting the Results
The results are delivered to you via our project
web interface, which provides complete access
to all the permutations run, and a full set of
charts for each one. Our analysts will be on-
hand to help you with any required
interpretation of the results.
23. Making Changes
Sometimes the results of the first study cause a
client to change the parameters to be assessed.
One or two simple changes can usually be
accommodated. If, however, you want to add more
technologies or change the scale range to be
studied we may need to charge for additional time.
Project Completion
Once completed, the project will remain
accessible in your GridMap interface for future
reference and requirements. If you progress to
buy a software licence for GridMap you will be
able to edit these initial studies directly yourself.
24. Manual Studies Pricing
Manual Studies Included
1 project per month = £500 per study
5x projects per month = £400 per study
10x projects per month = £300 per study
20x+ project per month = £250 per study
• Energy demand and costs analysis
• Addition of generation such as solar or wind
• Addition of combined heat & power systems
• Addition of energy storage to a facility
• Addition of generation + energy storage
• Impact of constraints on system potential
• Assessment of multiple energy strategies
• Assessment of change to existing scenarios
Please note that these prices are achievable if the required
information is supplied in a workable form. Meeting in person
to discuss a project, or for example fixing incomplete data sets
would understandably attract additional fees (charged @£80
per hour). However, some leeway is usually allowable, and help
is always provided, particularly to assist with your first study.
Argand endeavour to deliver these services at an
extremely affordable price. The more studies you do, the
more familiar we all become, and the cheaper it gets.
25. More Complex Studies
Larger or more complex studies are available.
Pricing depends on the time involved to set
up and run / report on the studies required.
Please call us to discuss.
For sites with multiple issues such as import
or export constraints, complex or critical
demands, private micro-grids, off-grid
scenarios, multi-site power aggregation or
other non-standard BHM scenarios please
call us to discuss. They can be modelled, but
they are be a bit more involved.
Technologies currently available to model
include: existing demand, solar PV (existing &
proposed), wind, CHP, energy storage (all
forms). Others can be added as required. A
wide range of stackable revenues can be
modelled as appropriate.
Argand Solutions have a range of monitoring,
control and limiting systems available to
gather data, maximise system potential, and
to monitor performance post installation.
Outsource Your Energy Analytics
26. Towards the end of 2018 GridMAP will be
released as a software application.
If you are interested to use GridMAP as a
project development tool, sales tool, or to
control & develop the same project or
portfolio over time, it will work out much
cheaper and quicker to run your own studies.
Full training & ongoing support will be
available. Individual licences will vary in price
depending on how many capabilities are
required.
