New Directions in Targeted Therapeutic Approaches for Older Adults With Mantl...i3 Health
i3 Health is pleased to make the speaker slides from this activity available for use as a non-accredited self-study or teaching resource.
This slide deck presented by Dr. Kami Maddocks, Professor-Clinical in the Division of Hematology and
Associate Division Director for Ambulatory Operations
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, will provide insight into new directions in targeted therapeutic approaches for older adults with mantle cell lymphoma.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounting for 5% to 7% of all lymphomas. Its prognosis ranges from indolent disease that does not require treatment for years to very aggressive disease, which is associated with poor survival (Silkenstedt et al, 2021). Typically, MCL is diagnosed at advanced stage and in older patients who cannot tolerate intensive therapy (NCCN, 2022). Although recent advances have slightly increased remission rates, recurrence and relapse remain very common, leading to a median overall survival between 3 and 6 years (LLS, 2021). Though there are several effective options, progress is still needed towards establishing an accepted frontline approach for MCL (Castellino et al, 2022). Treatment selection and management of MCL are complicated by the heterogeneity of prognosis, advanced age and comorbidities of patients, and lack of an established standard approach for treatment, making it vital that clinicians be familiar with the latest research and advances in this area. In this activity chaired by Michael Wang, MD, Professor in the Department of Lymphoma & Myeloma at MD Anderson Cancer Center, expert faculty will discuss prognostic factors informing treatment, the promising results of recent trials in new therapeutic approaches, and the implications of treatment resistance in therapeutic selection for MCL.
Target Audience
Hematology/oncology fellows, attending faculty, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL).
Learning Objectives
1.) Identify clinical and biological prognostic factors that can guide treatment decision making for older adults with MCL
2.) Evaluate emerging data on targeted therapeutic approaches for treatment-naive and relapsed/refractory MCL and their applicability to older adults
3.) Assess mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapies for MCL and their implications for treatment selection

Learning Objectives:
Describe the structure and function of taste buds.
Describe the relationship between the taste threshold and taste index of common substances.
Explain the chemical basis and signal transduction of taste perception for each type of primary taste sensation.
Recognize different abnormalities of taste perception and their causes.
Key Topics:
Significance of Taste Sensation:
Differentiation between pleasant and harmful food
Influence on behavior
Selection of food based on metabolic needs
Receptors of Taste:
Taste buds on the tongue
Influence of sense of smell, texture of food, and pain stimulation (e.g., by pepper)
Primary and Secondary Taste Sensations:
Primary taste sensations: Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter, Umami
Chemical basis and signal transduction mechanisms for each taste
Taste Threshold and Index:
Taste threshold values for Sweet (sucrose), Salty (NaCl), Sour (HCl), and Bitter (Quinine)
Taste index relationship: Inversely proportional to taste threshold
Taste Blindness:
Inability to taste certain substances, particularly thiourea compounds
Example: Phenylthiocarbamide
Structure and Function of Taste Buds:
Composition: Epithelial cells, Sustentacular/Supporting cells, Taste cells, Basal cells
Features: Taste pores, Taste hairs/microvilli, and Taste nerve fibers
Location of Taste Buds:
Found in papillae of the tongue (Fungiform, Circumvallate, Foliate)
Also present on the palate, tonsillar pillars, epiglottis, and proximal esophagus

3. 1
The first and the most basic rule of any kiss is-
knowing the right moment. Kiss should not be so
sudden that it becomes shocking!
4. 2
Quit stressing over who goes first. When you're
enjoying the activity, you forget who really started it.
Plus, be the one to launch a few lusty mouth-to-mouth
sessions and the physical charge will likely thrill him
so much, he'll soon follow suit on his own.
5. 3
Always kiss back. Guys are sensitive about physical
rejection, and turning your head away when he lunges
because you feel crabby or fear you have morning
breath can make him hesitate next time.
6. 4
Men should ensure that before heading into a kissing
scenario, ensure your facial hair is soft, by using a
small amount of hair conditioner on any stubble, and
then applying facial moisturiser. Or plaster your lips
with Vaseline, then gently wipe it off.
7. 5
Channel the Sherlock Holmes in you and detect when
she wants you to move in. Wait for her lips to appear
fuller. A slight blushing and widening of her lips shows
sexual interest. She'll also start to size up your lips for a
way to make a good mouth-match. So you'll see a slight
head tilt.
8. 6
According to a recent study, women rated the taste of a
partner's mouth as more important than men. Top
turn off? Halitosis. Fix bad breath using salt and a
glass of water. Dentists recommend gargling two
teaspoons of salt dissolved in water to eliminate
halitosis-causing bacteria.
9. 7
Don't slobber all over her like a Great Dane. "Brush
your lips over hers until she parts them and offers you
her tongue.
10. 8
Keep her face lightly cupped and look into her eyes.
Breathe out and shake your head as though you found
the kiss unbelievable.
11. 9
Kissing is your entrance exam for the rest of your
partner's body. For maximum effect, plant a small kiss
on each lip before placing soft, dry, relaxed kisses on
the entire mouth.
12. 10
"A woman's upper lip is served by different nerve
branches to her lower lip," says Siski Green, author of
How to Blow Her Mind In Bed. "Spend time
licking, kissing or gently nibbling her upper lip, then
move down below-no, not that far down-to ensure
every nerve ending gets stimulated to the max."
13. 11
Brush your lips between her throat and chin. The skin
is thinner where the body flexes, so the nerves and
blood vessels are closer to the surface-that's why it's
also a perfume point. You'll engage sensory receptors
and trigger an emotional response.
15. 13
The kiss won't just help you score at night, but it can
even help you win over your clients at business
meetings. A study at Stranmillis University College in
Belfast found that people who turned their heads to
the right when kissing were more emotionally
engaging than leftleaners. "By turning to the right, you
reveal your left cheek which is controlled by the
emotive right cerebral hemisphere," says researcher Dr
Julian Greenwood
16. 14
To make sure your partner harnesses the same positive
effects from a makeout session as you do, jack up the
romance. The setting of a kiss can affect how women
perceive it.
18. 16
When things go awry in a relationship, kissing can be a
potent weapon in your armoury.
19. 17
Kiss lightly around her mouth, on her cheeks, or on
her neck €”that's a very sensual thing to do. Then
when you reach her mouth, kiss her very softly on the
lips €”no insert-tongue-here kisses.
20. 18
A little tongue action is good, but not when you feel
like you're mouth-wrestling. Men are notorious for
tonsil spelunking.
21. 19
A guy should move around when making out, not sit
still and peck. Explore. Slide your lips over her body
and keep your hands moving.
22. 20
Some guys think a kiss simply involves moving their
tongue in and out of my mouth. That's just annoying.
Instead, try different motions and amounts of
pressure.
23. 21
Most men think cunnilingus is just foreplay. But
you’re on the wrong track: most women think of
dining at the Y as the best bit of the main course. If
you dive down directly into the delta, with the attitude
that munching out for a few minutes is just a way to
prime for the pump, she’ll sense it and lose interest
24. 22
Touch your partner's love nub like you’re punching
your PIN into an ATM and you'll get the wrong sort of
withdrawal. Instead, tantalise her with kisses that
initially avoid the breasts and genitals. Drive her wild
with your special kissing sequence-feathery kisses on
the neck, moving to the shoulder, then to the collar-
bone area, following to small of the back, inner thigh
and finally, hitting the mound between her legs.
25. 23
The shared adrenaline rush that comes from an
unexpected kiss can make a couple feel more bonded.
Why not try it?
26. 24
"Slide your mouth to his cheek and then his ear, then
back to his mouth,"Also try different things with your
hands, like rubbing his back, so it becomes a full-body
experienc
27. 25
You have to know when the moment is right. Like if
the conversation stops, your eyes meet and neither of
you seems to be able to look away, that is the perfect
moment to kiss her. So, you should take the
opportunity to do so.
28. 26
Never ask a woman for her permission to kiss her.
Despite what you might think, women, in general, like
it when their man takes charge, especially during a
passionate moment. Asking for her permission will
make you seem timid and unsure; not sweet and
sensitive. So, be a man and kiss her.
29. 27
This moment should feel like it is moving in slow
motion. There is nothing that will turn a woman off
faster than a guy who moves too quickly, especially if
this is the very first time you are even going to kiss her.
30. 28
Don't go from talking across a table to planting your
lips on her face; touch her. Put your hands on her hips
or around her waist and gently pull her toward you.
Then, run your fingers through her hair, and cup her
beautiful face in your hands.
31. 29
While eye contact is good up until this point, make
sure to close your eyes while you are kissing her. There
is nothing weirder to a woman than a guy who kisses
with his eyes wide open.
32. 30
Let the kiss have a tinge of affection. Instead of being
brutally agressive, it is always a better option to be
tender and loving.
