HOW TO HANDLE CROSS-
GENERATIONAL DIFFERENCES

Thankfully, there are a few ways to
bridge this gap:
CHALLENGE THE
STEREOTYPES
Each generation have their own
unique personality traits and what
they value most. However, lost in
these are generalizations that can
become problematic if they’re not
debunked. As such, a leader needs
to realize that many of these stereo-
types are false, and taking them at
face value can lead to more prob-
lems than answers.
FOSTER OPEN
COMMUNICATION
Leaders shouldn’t expect that their
reasons for certain actions or points
of view will be universally under-
stood, especially where the team
has different experiences or expec-
tations. Team leaders of cross-gen-
erational teams should help people
to communicate clearly and openly
in ways that are comfortable to all.
RESPECT BOUNDARIES
Having multiple generations in the
workplace means people will have
differing beliefs and values that
some may see as taboo, while oth-
ers feel more comfortable openly
discussing them. Leaders should
learn to respect the varying bound-
aries while upholding their own val-
ues and rules.

HOW TO HANDLE
CROSS-GENERATIONAL
DIFFERENCES
One of the leadership challenges
facing the modern business
leader is learning to work with
and appreciate the unique
traits, strengths, and skills of
colleagues who span different
generations. Sadly, the cost
of not doing so is a lack of
cohesion and even a loss of
mutual respect between team
members who have different
perspectives about issues.
