What is an Allergy?
An allergy, also known as hypersensitivity, is a reaction to certain triggers or
substances by your immune system, which typically does not bother most
other people.
Why does an Allergy occur?
In most people, their immune system fights germs as it’s the body’s defense
system. However, in most allergy cases, the immune system is responding to
a false alarm.
4. 4
What Substances Trigger an Allergy?
If you have an allergy, you often are sensitive to more than one thing.
Some of the substances that cause allergic reactions are:
●Pollen
●Dust
●Mold
●Pet Dander
●Insect Stings
●Certain food
●Certain medicines
●Certain substances like latex
5. 5 What are the Symptoms of an Allergy?
Allergies can range from minor symptoms like sneezing to severe and life-threatening
symptoms like anaphylaxis. Allergic symptoms include:
●Runny nose
●Sneezing
●Hay fever
●Red, swollen or watery eyes (Conjunctivitis)
●Itching
●Rashes
●Swelling
Prevention:
Preventing allergy depends on the type of allergy you have. Some of the preventable measures
against allergy include avoiding the known substance triggers such as pollen, or dust and
maintaining a diary to keep track of your activities and what you eat.

Diagnosis and Treatment
Your doctor will conduct skin and blood tests to diagnose allergies.
There is no complete cure for most allergies. But, treatments help relieve most of your allergy
symptoms.
Treatments include allergy shots, medicines, inhalers, nebulizers, and avoiding the
substances that cause the reactions.
If you suffer from mild to moderate allergies or respiratory problems, make an appointment to
see your doctor. If you’ve had a severe allergy or respiratory attack, visit your nearest urgent
care or emergency.
Los Gatos Doc is one of the trusted Urgent Care Clinic in the Los Gatos area. For children and

7. OUR KEY PHILOSOPHY
Take the time to listen.
What I try and do with every patient I see, in the first
few minutes, is just let them say what’s on their mind
and there’s a lot of study that show we don’t do that
enough in medicine. These are small things that you
can’t pick up really from just filling out a form.
That’s why it’s really important to spend time, talking
and listening and building that relationship.
