04Identify the
vehicle
opportunity
• Vehicle profiles
/ duty cycles
• Candidates for
EV replacement
Understand the costs
• Carry out whole life cost
analysis vs ICE
• Factor in grants and tax
benefits
Operational considerations
• How and where to re-charge
• Duty cycle and route optimisation
Driver acceptance
• Ensure drivers are
educated, informed
and enthusiastic!
• Consider EV driver
training to improve
range
6. The EV Adoption Pathway
Step 1 - Identify vehicle opportunity
• Collect data on: journey profiles, load requirements, passenger
requirements
• Good data on existing vehicles and how they are used very
important
• Compare with EV options available on the market (spec, range
etc.).
• Identify the vehicles that can be replaced
• Some companies can modify journey profiles to accommodate
EV’s, others are can not (vehicle range is increasing so this is
becoming less of an issue)

Electric van options:
Citroen Berlingo Nissan e-NV200 Peugeot ePartner
Renault Kangoo Z.E. LDV EV80 Renault Master Z.E.
9. The EV Adoption Pathway
Step 2 - Understand the Costs
• Whole Life Cost comparison with equivalent petrol/diesels
• EV’s have higher purchase price but significant savings on fuel
& service, maintenance and repair
9
11. The EV Adoption Pathway
Step 2 - Understand the Costs
• Lower and upper daily mileage limits:
o Lower limit = sufficient mileage to cover additional capital cost
o Upper limit = range limit of the EV
o 25 to 130 miles for electric cars
• EV depreciation rates falling
o Increasing confidence in 2nd hand market
o Demand outstripping supply so residual values strengthening
• Cost of installing charge point infrastructure
o 7kW & 22kW = £10,000
o 50kW = £40,000
• Funding support available for electric vehicles and charge
points
11
12. Low-Carbon Transport Business Loan

16. The EV Adoption Pathway
Step 2 - Understand the Costs
80% drop in lithium battery prices in last 7 years!
16
17. The EV Adoption Pathway
Step 3 - Operational Considerations
• When and where to charge (specified break times, office, home, public network)
• Vehicle duty cycle (route optimisation)
17
• 800 public charge points in Scotland
• Of which 175 are rapid charge points
18. The EV Adoption Pathway
3. Operational Considerations
• Type of charger required (7kW, 22kW or Rapid 50kW)
• Smart charging is coming (software specifying time of day to
charge to maximise efficiency)
18
Domestic Chargers
7kW (32A)
Charging time = 3-4hrs
Fast Chargers
7-22kW (32-96A)
Charging time = 2-4 hours
Rapid Chargers
50kW (DC)
Charging time = 30 mins
19. The EV Adoption Pathway
Step 4 - Driver acceptance
• Winning driver buy-in is key (get the staff on-board)
• Arrange extended test drives (2-4 days)
• Start small and build up
• FuelGood EV driver training
• Initial range anxiety disappears and they love them!
“They love the way they drive, the vans themselves, the lack of engine noise and the
fact it changes the way they drive. We’ve had no negatives”
(Terry Pycroft, head of fleet at Leeds City Council)

24. Ebike Case Study – Union of Genius
24
• Soup café based in Edinburgh
• Established 7 years ago
• Set up with a environmentally conscious ethos from
the beginning (e.g. recycling based loyalty scheme)
• When wholesale side of business started they
considered a van but decided to go with a manual
cargo bike (built from old bikes) instead
• When manual ebike broke they considered a e-cargo
options…
25. eBike Case Study – Union of Genius
25
• Heard about loan funding available from EST
• Applied for the EST ebike loan
• Bought 2 x Reese and Muller ecargo bikes
(Packster 60 and Packster 80)
• Ecargo bikes can carry up to 100kg
• Delivering to 35 cafes across Edinburgh 3 times
