This document discusses the history and evolution of mobile phone technology from the 1940s to present day. It outlines the development of 1G analog phones in the 1980s, improvements to 2G digital technology in the 1990s, the introduction of 3G technology capable of data transfer in the 2000s, and goals for 4G technology. The document also explores how mobile devices have improved connectivity with family, friends, work and enabled new applications like GPS, banking, media, and more, fundamentally changing how people communicate and access information.
The ideas for cellular phones were developed in the 1940s. However, it was not until the microprocessor becomes available that practical commercial solutions are possible.
Today there are more than 4 billion mobile phone subscriptions in the world. In the last few years the increase has been most dramatic in developing countries. Telecoms operators have tried to capitalise on this by offering new services that will generate new revenues for them. Mobile Applications are increasing revenues for the operators while voices revenues are getting less and less. But what are mobile applications?
In this lecture we look mobile.

Most people have heard of Medicare and Medicaid in Oregon; however, unless you have already applied to either program you may not know what they cover and what their respective eligibility requirements are. As there is a good chance you will need one or the other as you get older, understanding the difference between the two programs will be beneficial.
Nc verification and re processing for collaborative machiningLiu PeiLing
Collaborative machining is becoming a common practice worldwide. In mold manufacturing industry, as the specialized workshops often do machining much faster and cheaper than big mold firms, the mold makers are sub-contracting the machining jobs to other workshops especially the specialized workshops for higher efficiency and profit. This practice causes the separation of NC data generation, verification, and re-processing which requests new ways to manage NC data. This paper investigates the collaborative machining process and identifies quick NC data verification and re-processing as critical issues. The functionalities and limitations of the commercial systems are studied and the related NC model, simulation, verification, and optimization technology are scrutinzed. A dynamic in-process stock model based on a new geometry representation is proposed, then a system for quick NC verification and re-processing is developed using OpenGL. The system has been implemented in many mold manufacturing companies and the results show that the pervasive machining modeling, simulation, verification, and re-processing can effectively optimize machining processes in collaborative machining environments.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
3. Before we begin a few facts:
• Mobile phones have been around for several decades in some form or another. Beginning in the late
1940s, this cell technology was first used in mobile rigs which was mainly used in taxis, police cars and other
emergency vehicles and situations. The first mobile phones, referred to as First Generation or 1G, were
introduced to the public market in 1983 by the Motorola Company. These first mobile phones used analog
technology which was much less reliable than the digital technology we use today.
• During the 1990s, great improvements were made in the mobile phone technology. These phones used
Second Generation, or 2G technology. The Second Generation cellular phone technology was faster and
much quieter than its analog predecessor
• TheThird Generation technology, or 3G, is what many people currently use in their digital cellular phones
today. This technology was created very soon after the excitement that the 2G technology created. This
new technology is not only capable of transferring voice data (such as a phone call), but it is also able to
transfer other types of data, including emails, information and instant messages.
• FourthGeneration – 4G – technology. Goals for this new set of standards include a combination of
technologies that will make information transfer and internet capabilities faster and more affordable for
cellular phones.
• Even though it started a little more than 20 years ago, manufacturers have created an abundance of new
technologies that keep cell phone users coming back for more. They continue to increase the number of
capabilities and services to accommodate the growing needs of today’s “on the go” culture.Waiting
anxiously is the only way to find out what they will think of next.
