This document discusses the author's experience using KiCad, an open-source PCB design software. Some initial downsides of KiCad mentioned are lack of stable build support, poor Mac support, lack of documentation and libraries. However, the author finds KiCad appealing because it is open, free, and encourages open-source hardware. KiCad allows for fully open design and the author demonstrates some simple and complex boards as well as KiCad's schematic and layout features.
