How does the BA in Journalism course help you shape your career?
BA in Journalism is an undergraduate degree in journalism and mass communication that
students can pursue right after their Class 12. It is a three-year course. While pursuing this
course, candidates are taught about various aspects of the media industry like reporting,
compiling, writing, research, editing, and presentation of information.
After completing a BA in Journalism, students can en route their career for various mass
communication-related fields such as newspapers, TV news channels, radio stations, etc.
Typically, the area of Journalism is divided into two broad categories: Print Media and Electronic
Media. Candidates who aspire to work in Electronic Media can join television, radio or
internet/digital media companies, whereas, in Print Media, candidates can join newspapers,
magazines, news agencies and digests.
BA Journalism Eligibility Criteria
For BA Journalism eligibility criteria is to complete their Class 12th from a recognised board
and institute. Another additional eligibility criterion is that candidates should have studied Hindi
or English at the school level.
Students from any stream (Arts/ Commerce/ Science) can pursue a BA in Journalism course.
BA in Journalism Job Profiles & Top Recruiters
After completing a BA in Journalism course, an aspirant can pursue higher education, that is, a
course in journalism like MA in Mass Communication and Journalism, MA in Journalism, MA in
Mass Communication, PG Diploma in Journalism, etc., in any other field. On the other hand,
students are also eligible to pursue a job after completing their Journalism course. Some
popular job profiles that aspirants can consider seeking after their Journalism course are listed
below.
Photojournalist
Photojournalism is about interpreting and conveying events visually, i.e. through photographs. A
photojournalist's job has elements of editing, storytelling, operating camera equipment, technical
photography, and complying with lawful requirements. Some knowledge of print, digital
publishing and design also helps.
Copywriter
They can work for publications like magazines, websites, newspapers, and even online video
production companies. The role of copywriting is about creating content, which may be news
reports, editorials, articles, blogs, features, or video scripts.
Editor
They make sure that the content going out for public consumption is coherent, uniform, and in
line with publication guidelines. An editor works with proofreaders to spot grammatical errors
and wrong spellings, rewrite content for easy readability, and verify facts cited in the material.
Media Researcher
The work revolves around finding out background information and collecting factual data. For
example, a Media Researcher supports the production departments of radio, television, and
documentary films by filling out the details of show locations, etc. You may need specialised
knowledge or skills in a particular subject area for some jobs. For instance, the researcher
opening for an 'emerging technologies' course may list engineering or expertise in computer
science as one of the required qualifications.
Critic
Critics are experts who dish out their opinions and assessments on particular subject matters in
which they have comprehensive experience and knowledge. Critics may write for a magazine or
newspaper, host a radio or television show, or even disseminate their research in the form of
podcasts or YouTube videos. Usually, they cover government policies, social issues, or creative
works, including literature, music, art, fashion, cinema, and food, to name a few.
