Keynote for AMP's AMPLIFY convention delivered Thursday 25th. The topic is "How can we thrive in Complexity?" could also be called "Why do we make life so hard for ourselves?"
This document discusses innovation through 3 stories and a hypothesis. Story 1 describes a forest fire where quick thinking saved lives. Story 2 profiles pilots who stayed calm in emergencies through training. Story 3 is about Parkour, which trains the body through movement. The hypothesis is that devotion can lead to freedom and innovation. The document argues that preparing the mind through various disciplines can enable insight and innovation when faced with unpredictable problems.
The document discusses the connection between innovation, patents, and economic growth. It provides the following key points:
1) Western economies grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution due to innovation driven by patents and technology. Countries that studied and copied other nations' patent systems, like Japan copying the US system, also saw economic growth.
2) Innovation accounts for up to 80% of productivity growth in high-income countries. Firms that innovate outperform non-innovating firms.
3) "Soft thinking" skills like creativity and innovation are now as important as traditional "hard thinking" skills taught in schools, but education systems still focus more on eliminating soft thinking. True innovation often stems from chance
1. The document discusses how chaos often precedes great changes and encourages the reader to create chaos in order to enable change.
2. It provides several quotes about creativity, innovation, and the need for new approaches and thinking outside the box.
3. The document lists several books and resources on topics like creativity, innovation, breakthrough thinking, and humor. It also provides contact information for the author.
Don't stand in the fire: Leadership lessons from World of WarcraftBrian Hawkins
Often the most memorable lessons are when we fail. In the real world, (especially in business), that can be costly. So why, in something as crucial as leadership, do we not play games to learn this skill where the costs are low? With massively multiplayer games like World of Warcraft we have an opportunity to start learning leadership and make mistakes. Without destroying a thing.
In this talk, I'll share eight leadership lessons I learned by playing WoW and give examples of times, both in-game and in real life, where I applied the lessons (or where I had a pretty epic fail because I didn't).
I didn't set out to learn how to lead in World of Warcraft, but I did. It has paid off in my professional career more than any other training.
The road to innovation requires special behaviors and skills, we will explore both of them in this presentation. We will also follow a few innovative bread crumbs on the way.
Tips for the North American Manager Working in Latin AmericaDr. Greg Waddell
If you are an American, charged with leading a team in Latin America, you may be unaware of the rules that govern how people interact in that culture. Too often aspiring global leaders work under the assumption that all people play by the same rules and their cultural perspective is the only perspective. A framework of cultural dimensions may help you to see both the similarities and also the differences between your American assumptions and those of your Latin American team. Such knowledge may be the determining factor in your success in the cross-cultural setting.
Innovation Parkour for Information ArchitectsMatthew Milan
This document discusses concepts related to freedom, creativity, innovation, and mastery. It explores how training and practice can help people stay calm in difficult situations and think strategically. It also examines how certain disciplines like yoga, Tai Chi, and parkour can shape both the body and mind. The document advocates designing for emergence and keeping practices open and unfinished in order to continuously learn and improve reality.
This document provides an overview of entrepreneurship workshops held from 2011-2012. It discusses theoretical frameworks used in the program and defines entrepreneurs. Examples of entrepreneurs like Demitrios Burkas of 1 Liter of Light and Steve Jobs of Apple are provided. The document emphasizes that execution is key and encourages participants to start team creation as the next step.

The Two Stories - Thriving in ComplexityAndrew Rixon
The document discusses two different stories or perspectives - Story 1 and Story 2. Story 1 represents simplicity and control, while Story 2 represents complexity, change and emergence. It suggests that the background or context influences one's perception of which story is more helpful. Depending on whether the situation is simple, complex or requires courage, different stories may be better suited. It promotes considering which story is currently serving the reader best and provides contact information for workshops and consulting on developing resilience through complexity-inspired approaches.
This is the story of a workshop that I facilitated earlier this year. But its not a story told by me, it's a story told by one of the workshop participants.
Like they say a picture tells a thousand words...
Making a difference by Doing One Less ThingAndrew Rixon
In today’s busy world, the focus appears to be on more and more doing. More mandates, regulations, guidelines and procedures. To make things worse, providing opportunities to help adults and children learn sustainable practices to living may be severely limited by the current paradigm of education – based on telling. This current state raises the key question of how can we work towards building relationships and truly empowering people to learn how to integrate sustainable practice into their day to day lives?
Sustainability Victoria's purpose is to show the way to using our resources more efficiently and reducing our everyday environmental impacts. As part of their ResourceSmart Education programs Sustainability Victoria is facilitating a growing Community of Practice that is working together to continuously improve Education for Sustainability (EfS) in Victorian communities.
The key methodology being used across this growing Community of Practice is an approach known as Open Space Technology which has at its heart the principle of “doing one less thing”, an approach that produces co-ordinated documented and action-oriented outcomes that participants themselves take responsibility for.
The presenters will share the story of how Open Space Technology has been applied to the Victorian EfS sector Community of Practice, the themes that have emerged, actions undertaken and reflections of Community of Practice members.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn how the 4 principles and one law of Open Space Technology enable people to participate in ways that are most meaningful to them.
What are pictures for the future of today's organisations? What new skills are needed?
This artwork has been prepared for AMP's festival of innovation and thought leadership themed on "Convergence and Emergence". It paints a backdrop for the topic which I am contributing to the festival exploring the question of "How can we thrive in Complexity?".
This tells the story of what might be considered a forgotten fairy tale.
With today's environment asking us what will tomorrow bring for organisations, this story explores what might become of hierarchies.
Living systems are dynamic networks that are constantly evolving and adapting. When we map and study networks we discover they behave like living systems that are highly interconnected. As part of these networks, humans must find a dynamic balance to thrive within complex systems.
This was a recent keynote presentation delivered for RACQ in Brisbane themed on "Moving from Conflict to Collaboration: Practices for Getting Unstuck". My talk takes a personal look into what it means to be stuck, and practices that promote both stuckness and flow.
Big Mind - Becoming a wise leader (and follower!)Andrew Rixon
Big Mind is derived from Zen philosophy and is about tapping into something bigger and more expansive than our intellect, our "small mind". Leaders (and followers!) need to be able to work with their biases and ego, consider a wider range of options/opinions and leverage their intuition and creativity. Paradoxically, these things do not come from thinking harder but from letting go.
Whilst this card set has been developed primarily as a training aid for helping people and groups learn about Open Space Technology there’s no reason it can’t be used for more “business-as-usual” applications as well.

Why are we (as humans) so slow in learning about Sustainability?
Here we will delve into the issues of thinking in a systemic way, Action Learning, how to study more effectively & we look at really understanding what Sustainability is.
I was asked by Geelong College to present on Sustainability. I am not a scientist or climate change expert, so I decided to focus my presentation on the stuff I know best. This is a presentation about learning to make the transition to a more more sustainable lifestyle, business, school community or wahtever. In advance, apologies for the 'clutter' on a few of the slides.
Complexity, Collaboration and UnconferencingGeoff Brown
Geoff Brown discusses focusing on solutions rather than problems to enable change. He advocates using new approaches like "unconferencing" conferences to invite collaborative content and value non-experts. Understanding complexity is also important, as is recognizing that human behavior is complexly influenced by social networks. Solutions should be the focus through approaches like appreciative inquiry and positive psychology.
In a VUCA World – one characterized by Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity – the traditional approach of applying well-practised set of processes, methods and tools to a well understood and clearly defined problem simply doesn’t work. Adaptive challenges are the ‘wicked problems’ that organizations face. They are messy, boundaries aren’t clear and they tend to be systemic in nature. They require resources to be mobilized (whether you control the resources or not) in areas where there is limited experience in how to think through to the answer. So how then can organizations disrupt themselves? What's needed and what's required?
The document discusses the importance and benefits of interdisciplinary knowledge and research. It notes that interdisciplinarity allows for more creativity, helps address complex problems, and promotes a unity of knowledge. Interdisciplinarians enjoy greater flexibility in their research and the intellectual experience of exploring new areas. However, the document also acknowledges some of the tensions that can arise between rigor and innovation when taking an interdisciplinary approach. It advocates for reflexivity and finding a balance between training and openness to new perspectives.
1. The document discusses different strategies for flexible and "outside the box" thinking, including thinking in "boxes" of different sizes.
2. It introduces the concept of paradigms as frames of reference that shape our perceptions and can limit our thinking.
3. Flexible thinking techniques are presented, like smaller box thinking and bigger box thinking, as well as the idea of using "creative thinking spectacles" to perceive situations in different ways.
The document summarizes key points from presentations given at the 2010 Tamarack CCI Conference. It features summaries of talks by Thomas Homer-Dixon, John Ott, and Brenda Zimmerman. The speakers discussed the need for leadership that acknowledges complexity, is authentically inclusive, and embraces risk and failure as opportunities to learn. They emphasized viewing problems through a systems lens and using collaboration and experimentation to address complex challenges.
Innovation and creativity often come from unexpected places and accidents rather than strict planning. Many great discoveries and innovations were results of chance, open-mindedness, freedom to experiment and willingness to adapt plans based on unexpected opportunities and insights. Successful organizations encourage informal conversations, diversity of ideas, tolerance for ambiguity and allow people freedom to explore without being limited by rigid structures or plans.
Hermitage May 20 2010 Strategic PlanningMartyBlack
This document outlines the agenda and notes from a 2010 strategic planning meeting for the Hermitage. The meeting focused on defining core values, vision, mission and programming for the organization. Key points discussed include establishing values of creativity, history, ecology and community; crafting a vision for the future; and examining current and potential programming and resources over 1-5 years and 10+ years. Next steps identified preparing a summary for the board and developing short and long-term implementation plans to accomplish the strategic goals.
An assessed project for Masters Yr 1 students to attack which relates cultural differentiation to the understanding of inhibitors to the uptake of sustainability worldwide. Incorporates a four page 'thinkpiece'.
Creativity is defined as the ability to generate new ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that can be useful in solving problems or entertaining others. Common traits of creative individuals include divergent thinking, risk-taking, and behavioral flexibility. There are three main types of creativity - technical, which focuses on problem-solving; artistic, which is driven by self-expression; and hybrid, which combines both problem-solving and personality. Factors that can influence creativity include ways of thinking, environmental support, access to tools, and reflective thinking. Strategies for enhancing creative skills involve taking the first step, setting goals and deadlines, and establishing an environment that encourages new ideas.

This document discusses the exponential growth of information consumption and creation globally. It notes that we now create as much information in two days as was created from the dawn of humanity until 2003. However, most information is transient and seen by no one. The document then discusses issues around filter bubbles online and the blurring of information sources and platforms. It defines media literacy as a set of perspectives used to interpret messages, and as a continuum involving cognitive, emotional, artistic and moral dimensions. Key aspects of media literacy are discussed as personal locus, knowledge structures and skills.
This document discusses zooming out from an individual focus to a systems-level perspective in psychological and educational work. It advocates taking an ecological approach that considers all levels of a client's environment, including peers, family, school, community and policies. Barriers to this approach include focusing assessments and conversations on individuals rather than systems. The document provides examples of strengths-based, appreciative questions that can help practitioners zoom out to understand how various layers of a client's environment interact. It emphasizes involving all stakeholders in assessment, feedback and intervention to properly address problems at a systems level.
Michael Edson, Resource Sharing RemixedMichael Edson
Presentation for the 2009 Rethinking Resource Sharing IV forum at the Online Computer Library Consortium (OCLC) campus in Dublin, OH. (The slideshow as a compilation is in the public domain, though individual assets may be under copyright as noted.)
A workshop where we asked the participants to bring their challenges on how to build the environments in which people speaking up makes a difference. We worked out specific and effective speaking up strategies they could take back and make actionable in their daily work and teams as well as across their organisation.
The documents discuss how humility can be learned from nature and everyday objects. The Mishnah teaches that knowing our mortality should make us humble. The Talmud says Torah finds those who are humble like water flows to low areas. It also notes Adam was created last to remind the proud of their place. Derech Eretz Zutta advises being like a threshold all can step on rather than a door letting in wind or making others bend. Nature and objects can teach humility if we reflect on how they demonstrate our smallness in the world.
