Bath salts are made from the khat plant, which is commonly used as a social drug in parts of Africa and the Middle East. The amino acids from khat are extracted and processed in Chinese factories to create MDMA, and then amphetamines and sometimes cocaine are added to increase potency and create bath salts. However, khat farming uses a significant amount of water, with 40% of Yemen's water used for irrigation, which impacts groundwater supplies and contributes to water scarcity issues in some regions.
