How Apple Trumped Research In Motion Once Again

I attended Research In Motion’s BlackBerry World 2012 convention
last May, and I really wanted to believe that I was witnessing the
company finally getting itself back up on its feet after more than a
year of spiraling downward. RIM, which once sat on the smartphone
throne, has seen its market share swiftly dwindle, with many
consumers opting to sell used BlackBerrys and switching to the
competitors’ smartphones instead. However, the BlackBerry 10
presentation at the convention seemed set to change all that. RIM
SEO, Thorsten Heins had gone on record a lot of times stating that
they pulled out all the stops to ensure that the BB 10 mobile
operating system would be their saving grace, and it sure looked like
that at the show. The BB 10 had a lot of nifty features that put it in the
running with the other mobile OSes on the market. It even
transitioned the BlackBerry from having a physical keyboard to a
virtual one, signaling an evolution of sorts for the Berry; and this
without sacrificing the keyboard’s “Berry feel” (its signature raised-
and-boldened look, the tangible response cues, etc.). For all intents
and purposes, it seemed that RIM was back in the game.

Fast forward just a month later and there are now talks of Research
In Motion looking at last resort split-and-merger deals to try and stay
afloat. Why can’t the company just catch a break and prevent
even more consumers from deciding to trade in BlackBerrys for
something else? In a word: Apple.

Despite the absence of the iPhone 5 at Apple’s recently concluded
World Wide Developers Convention 2012, the company nevertheless
wowed the crowd with the unveiling of the iOS 6. The new mobile OS
made a definite case of Apple’s intentions to push the envelope in
portable gadget functionality by going beyond the gadgets’
physical limitations.

Two features of the iOS 6 stood out: The Maps app and the much
improved Siri. Maps is Apple’s answer to Google Maps, upping the
ante for navigation programs by implementing two key features. The
first one is the “turn-by-turn” function, which rotates the onscreen
map relative to the direction a user is facing, eliminating the need to
constantly reorient one’s “inner compass.” The second is the Flyover
mode, which is a rendering of a city in 3D where a user can
manipulate the camera every which way to get a better vantage
point and a more detailed look at his desired destination.

As impressive as that sounds, things only get better with Siri. After a
hugely successful beta stage stint with the iPhone 4S, Siri further
expands her virtual assistant role this year by upgrading her accent
and language recognition capabilities, and by assimilating herself
even more with the iGadgets’ myriad apps. Even more amazing,
Apple has plans to integrate iDevices with car systems to assist drivers
(via Siri) with whatever help they require, from navigation to email
composition and everything in between. And of course, the driver
can always just talk with Siri if things get too boring on the road.

People are now practical, they are selling old Electronics and
switching to new phones. It’s forward thinking like this that
consistently puts Apple at the top of the game. If RIM hopes to see a
resurgence anytime soon and diminish the number of people trading
in Berrys for iPhones, they had best start learning from the
competition.
