Connecting material is required to have appropriate printability, preservation and thermal transfer adaptability, it should have small affinity with dye, and easy to release dye gases. Commonly used binders are low-viscosity ethyl cellulose, ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, modified alkyd resin and others. Commonly used solvents are turpentine, terpineol, high boiling alcohol, cellosolve.
The most important feature of the sublimation transfer is dye can diffuse into the fabric fibers. Therefore, good quality dye sublimation ink has vivid color, strong stability and good transfer efficiency. Quality of sublimation inks affect the quality of the product directly, therefore, the choice of high-quality dye-sublimation ink is very important.

A guide to sublimation printing technology for sublimation
Sublimation process is where a the special sublimation ink has been heated up until in converting it into a gas, at this point where it diffuses onto the selected product and solidifies. The ink transfer using sublimation method will be permanently heat transferred to textile, mugs, puzzles, hats, metals, and other sublimation surfaces. Other than that, sublimation printing is also suitable on fabrics such as t-shirt, cushions, home decoration etc. and also to ceramic products for instance mugs.
What types of materials suitable in sublimation process and are there any limitations?
As mention above, in sublimation printing you can print any sublimation blanks such as fabrics, polyester, jigsaw puzzle, hats and anything that have sublimate coating on it can be used in sublimation printing. Anyhow, there are still limitations in sublimation printings. This includes a natural fiber such as cotton. Sublimation printing is not suitable to be printed on 100% cotton because the image to fade and wash out.
Normally, sublimation inks are darker than normal inks. Due to that reason, you cannot print it onto dark colored material, but you can change it into pastel color or white to get the awesome image printed.
Please remember, the only product that has sublimation coated can be used in sublimation printing. It would never work if you use sublimation printings on normal mugs you purchase in the mall no matter how expensive it is. For your information, the most suitable heat suitable for sublimation process are from 180 to 400 degree Celsius.

How About The Aftermarket Dye Inkjet Inks And Its Conversions ?
- 2. Note that most printers are built for a particular type of dye sublimation ink and you can’t easily swap them around. You can however, often use the same type of ink from a different after market supplier, usually because they offer cheaper bulk prices.
- 3. Dye sublimation printer manufacturers normally make most of their profits from ongoing ink sales, so they may try to discourage this by offering long-term lease contracts that include consumables, or by saying the warranty is void if you don’t use their inks. Some of the aftermarket ink suppliers get around this by offering insurance deals that cover some maintenance and repair claims.
- 4. In rare cases, a third party conversion between types will be offered, but only between closely related inks such as strong solvent to light solvent, or light solvent to solvent-UV hybrid.
- 5. In most cases these will be conversions of new machines before delivery, but retrofits are sometimes possible. An example is the Colorific Lightbar conversion of light solvent Mimaki, Mutoh and Roland UV inkjets from light solvent to solvent-UV. In this case, older machines can be retrofitted on-site by flushing out, changing the feed lines and adding a new UV curing lamp system.
