1. CASESTUDY Challenge
Located on one of the oldest streets in York
is the cityâs newest hotel, the International
Hotels Group owned Hotel Indigo. Set in
one of the countryâs oldest cities, surrounded
by culture and steeped in rich history, Hotel
Indigo is bordered with iconic historical sites,
vintage shops and a wealth of beautiful
buildings.
The cityâs rich heritage of large confectionery
manufacturers including Rowntreeâs and
Terryâs of York and its Roman history have
both played key roles in the design of the
hotel. The 101 rooms throughout the hotel
play host to a confectionery theme that
pays homage to the local history, from the
cushions that look like they are covered
in giant smarties to the âchocolateâ wood
paneling throughout the hotel.
Newhey was challenged to design and
produce luxurious carpet to flow through
the hotel corridors and rugs to compliment
the designs of the bedrooms whilst paying
homage to the history of the city.

2. Design Solution
Newheyâs design team collaborated with Rob Matthews at Matthews Mee to design and
manufacture 5 individual rugs, 2 for public areas and 3 for guestrooms. All rugs were finished
with a blind hem to give a clean and contemporary edge. The corridors and winding staircase
featured a bold geometric pattern incorporating a simple lined border helping to bring a historic
feel to the hotel with a modern geometric twist.
The bespoke carpets and rugs were created using Newheyâs Colortec+ technology. The product
is tufted using computer yarn placement technology, a high-tech innovation used on projects
that require a durable product to deal with high footfall. This carpet construction also allowed
for a cost effective solution. Another unconventional feature of Colortec+ technology is that the
carpet is constructed using 80% wool and 20% Nylon hank dyed pile yarns, allowing Newhey to
create a high quality carpet.
The chocolate themed designs may pay reference to the cityâs past but the technology used
to produce the carpet definitely doesnât. Newheyâs revolutionary secondary backing system
âevobacâ features on every design. Evobac is made using 100% recycled plastic bottles and
offers a sustainable option for the hotel, without decreasing the luxury feel of the carpet.

âThis design direction for Splendid
Hospitality & IHG at Hotel Indigo
York draws on elements from
the local industrial, social &
architectural history. Bespoke
bedroom rugs where commissioned
from Newhey Carpets & reflect the
Georgian tiled floors seen in many
of the town houses throughout the
city. A modern twist was added by
mixing up the geometric designs
to create an informal patchwork
design throughout the corridors.
Public areas attracted a similar
rationale by using a number of
different designs to create zones
in the food & beverage areas.â
