Planning Horror Film
Sequence
My Idea: two girls doing a Ouija board, lights go out and one of them
shines a candle of a scary masked face.
The Title – Demons
In my opening horror film sequence, the opening
shot will be an establishing shot of two girls in an
old library. They will be in the middle of the room on
the floor, and in between them is a Ouija board. The
lighting will be candle light, but still quite bright.
They will be laughing and joking, moving the glass
around a lot. There will be an over-the-shoulder shot
of them doing this, and the laughter will become
quite distant and faint, and the light will get slightly
dimmer. Then there is a close up shot of one of the
girls laughing, and another close up of the other
laughing still, but looking worried. There is then a
long shot, and the girls get up, walking out of shot
through a door. The board is left in the room, and
there is a zoom shot of the glass, slowly moving
across the board on its own. As it is moving, one of
the girls comes back in. There is a close up shot of
the glass, and then a mid shot of her staring at it.
There will be quite slow, sinister and repetitive music
play, building up the tempo.
There is a mid shot of the board and the candles,
which then suddenly go out together, leaving the
room in darkness. You can hear the girl breathing,
then some fumbling and the striking of a match.
There is a close up shot of the girls face, holding the
candle below her face, with just her face in light. She
is breathing heavily, and then starts to shine the
candle around the room slowly. The shot will be a
panning shot, following the candle. It will pass over a
bookshelf, the door, another bookshelf and then a
very sinister masked face. She passes the candle
over this, with the camera still following, then
quickly pulls it back to where the face was. There are
only old books illuminated by the candles. There is a
mid shot of the girl who is holding her breath and
still holding the candle up to the bookshelf and there
is silence for a second, then the loud scream of the
other girl is heard from the distance, and it cuts to
black.
• Creepy, eerie atmosphere
• No actual speaking, the sound will
be more focused on the sound of the
music and heavy breathing to make it
tense.
• There will be a big build up when the
candle is being shined around the
room to when she reveals the mask.
Location:
• A dark room, lots of dark book and bookcases to
create a ‘gothic’ sort of setting.
• The room should be kept quite plain so the
attention is on the girls and the Ouija board, but
creepy enough to fit in with the theme.
Generic Conventions:
• The Ouija board will instantly show
that its going to be a horror film
because they are associated with
ghosts etc.
• The candle-light will show it is dark
and will only show some areas
leaving others in darkness.
• The room is going to look like a old
library, with cobwebs and dusty
books making it look unused and
abandoned
• The clothes they will be wearing are
going to be quite innocent and
young to show that they are children.
• The mask is going to be very scary,
with a creepy smile and it will cover
the whole face.
Unique Selling Point
• It will be different from most other
horror films because it is about being
haunted and rather than having blood
and gore.
• It will be about being possessed and
a psychological horror, rather than
about getting killed.
• There will be action at the beginning,
but instead of someone getting killed it
tells you straight away that the mask
will play an important part in the film,
as will the Ouija board.
