Driving Toward Financial Freedom
Shaw, MS
After recently returning to his family’s farm in
Mississippi to care for aging relatives, Larry found
himself in need of a car. The 77-acre farm is home to
chickens, hogs, goats and cows, but little else. And, it is
several miles from the facility where Larry found work.
He did not think he could get financing at a bank, but
decided to take a chance on HOPE, the only financial
institution located in the Town of Shaw. Larry says “his
credit score wasn’t the highest,” but HOPE’s team
provided the financing he needed to purchase a vehicle
to meet his transportation needs. He later received
financing for a mobile home to place on the farm
property. “Shaw is an island,” Larry says. “If it were not
for HOPE, people would have to drive 15 miles to get to
another financial institution.”
Larry Roberts
This is why your Transformational Deposit
is needed in Itta Bena, Mississippi
Ms. Dotson opened her first bank account
when she was 100 years old. She opened it
with HOPE.
Source: Rural Policy Research Institute; Center for Applied Research & Environmental Studies
Itta Bena has an estimated $1.2 million in total
community deposits. Even if HOPE had 100% of
market share, local deposits could only support
twelve home mortgages (avg. $100,000) or two small
business loans (avg. $600,000) in Itta Bena.
Transformational Deposits import capital into Itta
Bena and similar communities across the Deep South
– where wealth has been extracted for generations –
to fuel lending that puts communities on a pathway
towards realizing the kind of economic mobility seen
in X community shown above.

With Transformational Deposits
we can realize the kind of future
growth projected below
Since 2008, HOPE has –
• Increased total assets from $129MM to $460MM.
• Originated more than 24,000 loans totaling nearly
$675MM.
• HOPE also finances community strengthening
projects proven to fuel upward mobility like
healthcare facilities that support 125,000+
patient visits,
• Schools that educate 8,000+ students
• And affordable housing for 3,300+ families.
While maintaining our focus on empowering
historically underserved people to build wealth
with –
• 90% of mortgages to first-time homebuyers.
• More than half of business loans to
entrepreneurs of color, female entrepreneurs and
in high poverty areas.

• Make a tax deductible donation or grant to our 501(c)(3) at
www.hopecu.org/donate (donations can be of cash or stock, and made directly or

• Invest in a federally insured Transformational Deposit at HOPE, helping build wealth
in communities from which wealth has been extracted for generations at
www.hopecu.org/transform.
• Make a low cost, long term loan that grows and sustains HOPE’s impact (for
example, a PRI from private foundations or an equity investment as CRA credit for
banks)

Hope Policy Institute
Hope Policy Institute serves as the policy division of HOPE (Hope Enterprise
Corporation and Hope Credit Union). Through independent analysis grounded in the
experiences of HOPE’s programs and its members, the Policy Institute’s work is
directed towards the attainment of three outcomes in Deep South communities:
• an increase in overall investment;
• the deepening of financial inclusion among residents;
• an increase in the power and voice of local people to influence policy decisions
in ways that ensure economic opportunity for all and in particular people of
color.
HOPE’s intentional policy approach to advocacy recognizes that while each loan and
every account supported by HOPE is important, the effects are small relative to the
needs of the region. Only by influencing public policies and the practices of private
institutions is lasting, scalable impact achieved.

  • 3. Driving Toward Financial Freedom Shaw, MS After recently returning to his family’s farm in Mississippi to care for aging relatives, Larry found himself in need of a car. The 77-acre farm is home to chickens, hogs, goats and cows, but little else. And, it is several miles from the facility where Larry found work. He did not think he could get financing at a bank, but decided to take a chance on HOPE, the only financial institution located in the Town of Shaw. Larry says “his credit score wasn’t the highest,” but HOPE’s team provided the financing he needed to purchase a vehicle to meet his transportation needs. He later received financing for a mobile home to place on the farm property. “Shaw is an island,” Larry says. “If it were not for HOPE, people would have to drive 15 miles to get to another financial institution.” Larry Roberts

  • 8. Hope Policy Institute Hope Policy Institute serves as the policy division of HOPE (Hope Enterprise Corporation and Hope Credit Union). Through independent analysis grounded in the experiences of HOPE’s programs and its members, the Policy Institute’s work is directed towards the attainment of three outcomes in Deep South communities: • an increase in overall investment; • the deepening of financial inclusion among residents; • an increase in the power and voice of local people to influence policy decisions in ways that ensure economic opportunity for all and in particular people of color. HOPE’s intentional policy approach to advocacy recognizes that while each loan and every account supported by HOPE is important, the effects are small relative to the needs of the region. Only by influencing public policies and the practices of private institutions is lasting, scalable impact achieved.

Editor's Notes

  1. Need to correct rate for CD – this edit is made Also wonder about “Initial Deposit and Minimum Balance” for MM, should this just read “Minimum Balance” – this edit is made - Is there a way to make this slide a bit more splashy? Maybe add a picture of a member? – move Fannie Dotson image to this slide
  2. Could we use a story more connected to the why behind Transformational Deposits? Maybe of someone in the Delta cluster who had been un/underbanked before HOPE came to town? Maybe a entrepreneur of color who wasn’t able to get a loan from a more traditional lender and then came to HOPE? Perhaps something like this from Itta Bena?
  3. - Let’s remove the education stat to make chart more simple and add another community for comparison to show the total per capita community deposits in Itta Bena to the total per capita community deposits in a White, higher income town. - Could we use the mobility map here instead of the red-coded map of MS? And have a call out box anchored in Itta Bena that include the table and language? - Not sure what value the map of MS brings. We recommend removing. If we keep it, we need to indicate what the red stands for.
  4. - Either change or strike the first bullet. Consider bulleting the patient visits, student served, affordable housing stats so they stand out more. Should we include our membership growth stat somewhere? Perhaps put in parenthesis behind revised first bullet? RG is working with Alan to populate numbers for 2020-2025, that are adjusted for Covid. Let’s add title somewhere on here that indicates with TD’s we can realize the kind of future growth projected below…or something to that effect.
