Hitler became ruler of Germany by being elected Chancellor in 1933 and consolidating power. He gained votes by promising to restore Germany's economy and national pride following its defeat in World War I. Other countries were aware that Hitler was rapidly expanding Germany's military in violation of the Treaty of Versailles but hoped war could be avoided through appeasement of his demands.
