‘Holding the golden thread’ is a martial arts term that honours connection to our
natural life force and pace of learning. This invites us to both experience and
welcome our own and others human vulnerability alongside our own and others
strengths and gifts, as the foundation for the best of all worlds.
The organizing principles and practices of ‘Holding the Golden Thread’ will include
exploring, naming, and compassionately using your own natural reactions working
with live professional client situations that matter most to you. Discovering
unfinished physiological, psychological and power based survival patterns and other
identifications operating in the personal and collective body with and without our
awareness. Practical cutting edge tools will be related to current advances in
practice and theory with examples drawn from Belfast, Dublin, South Africa, Sri
Lanka, and European contexts. This includes practices and research with
organisations on transgenerationalthemes, on supporting parents, and on listening
and learning from those with so called ‘special needs’ that has influenced attitudes
and actions of social and governmental policy and practice.
We will explore the connection between what I call the ‘gifts’ of vulnerability and
what Malcolm Parlett terms ‘whole intelligence’ (Parlett, 2015).
The opportunity is to challenge and support yourself and others through holding a
clear, tried and tested framework that organizes your interventions, supports you
to work with 5 underlying survival default patterns, while applying organising
principles for practice that offer understanding to safely use the physiology,
psychology and power/politics of connection. An ethic grounded in autonomy,
agency and compassion is the basis of this practice that is aligned to the latest
findings on the physiology and neuroscience of co regulation (Porges, 2016).
Step by step in clear and discrete units of work we will:
1. Discover what you most wish for in the contexts that matter most to you
2. Use a practical and integrative, developmental framework for assessing and supporting
the edge of your evolving practice, including the liberating ‘Law of Pragnanz’, and
introducing Organising Principles of Practice that are the ‘Golden Thread’
3. Offer live demonstration, consultation, and opportunities for individual, small group,
large group experiential reflection and brief summaries of trainer experience
4. Define and affirm your unique signature strengths and ‘developmental edge’
5. Explore and integrate new and unfamiliar resources that are essential to working in an
embodied and strategic manner. Online, and other at your own pace resources will be
made available to practitioners.
