PhD Doctoral Thesis (Oct 2014)
Thesis Title: Workplace Spirituality: Profile and Influence ofSpiritually-Inspired Business Leaders –
A Cross-Cultural Perspective
Utilising a qualitative technique and a heuristics methodology, this part-time doctoral study investigated
spiritually inspired business leaders from a cross-cultural Eastern and Western perspective in the flourishing
field of workplace spirituality. The study’s key contribution includes;
Profile of spiritually inspired leaders considering triggers that led to an inner spiritual seeking and its
influence on a leader’s external engagements
Influence of spiritually inspired leaders on workplace values including workplace relations, ethical
conduct and resilience in facing leadership challenges
Impact of spiritually inspired leaders on co-workers and organisational climate
A theoretical socio-spiritual paradigm
2. Page 2 of 10 Resume of Karthyeni Sridaran
This study adopted a Heuristics methodology more commonly used in the fields of psychology and social
sciences. It allowed for a rare glimpse into the deeply held spiritually inspired values that anchored a
business leader’s personal and work-place values. The research proposed a new socio-spiritual model
incorporating inner spiritual dimensions as an underlying tacit force to help business leaders to take more
responsible and sustainable actions in their outer engagements. The research also presented a discussion on
their workplace environments, which showed an inclusive climate where members experienced high levels
of trust and collegiality. The socio-spiritual model based on tacit dimension offers an alternative leadership
paradigm to deal with modern day concerns. Purpose, meaning, wellbeing and wellness are all becoming
important questions to be address at the workplace of the modern world.
RESEARCH INTEREST
My research interests are in the relatively new area of workplace spirituality. My research work revolves
around the themes of workplace spirituality, organisational wellness, and reflective practices for self-
development, positive psychology, sustainable mindsets and spiritually inspired leadership. These are all
important new areas of research for the next era, to shift business mindsets from prevailing hard-nosed
‘business as usual’ models towards a wellness and consciousness model of management and leadership. This
could be achieved by incorporating a series of reflective and inward-directed practices at the individual, team
and organisational levels, to achieve system-wide impact. Integrating reflective principles and practices in
the classroom and the boardroom, will promote genuine creativity and innovative solutions and ideas to flow
creating inclusive workplace environments. My research looks into how business organisations can create
flourishing thriving enterprises by creating workplace environments based on trust, inspiring people at all
levels to genuinely engage with purpose, meaning and high productivity.
