floor of what is now the English Channel – a ‘land bridge’
- People from Europe bagan to arrive( Britian’s earliest immigrants)

6. THE BRITISH ISLES ARE BORN
- Many thousands of years, Ice Age hunter- gatherers could easily cross
to Britian from Europe and back again across the land bridge where
the English Channel now is.
- Then, around 8500 bc, the climate started to warm up and the ice age
began to melt.
- Over the next few thousand years, the land bridge gradually
disappeared under water as the sea level rose, and Britian became an
island.

7. MORE SETTLERS
• Life in Britian remained largely unchanged for thousands more years
• More hunter-gatherers arrived from Europe by boat and others left
• Some fought with other groups while others stayed isolated
• Then, around 7000 years ago, an important change happened:-
• People learned how to farm and produce their own food rather than having to
hunt it and gather it
• New settlers comes to Britain from Europe brought wheat and barley seeds to
grow crops
• They also brought animals for meat, including pigs, sheep and goats and they
owned tame dogs too
• They build more permanent homes and cleared large areas of woodland for
farming
