2. Introduction
■ Dr. Keith Berman, a plastic surgeon with decades of experience
performing breast augmentation and other cosmetic surgeries,
manages his own practice in NewYork City. In fact, Dr. Keith
Berman has published original surgical research in the Annals of
Plastic Surgery, a peer-reviewed medical journal.
Though many associate breast augmentation with the post-World
War II era, its roots go back to the very end of the 19th century,
when a doctor attempted to restore the shape of a patient’s breast
following the excision of a benign tumor. After the turn of the 20th
century, doctors experimented with breast fillers like paraffin.
Unfortunately, these caused unforeseen and, in some cases,
serious complications.

3. BreastAugmentation
■ After paraffin, doctors tried injecting silicon into breasts, but
the procedure also gave rise to serious complications. It was
not until the early-1960s that two surgeons came up with the
idea to bind a silicon gel inside of a shell, creating the breast
implant paradigm that has defined breast augmentation ever
since.The largest change post-1960s arrived in 1992, when the
saline filling replaced the silicon due to safety concerns.
The procedure remains a mainstay of plastic surgery in
America. According to data released in 2015 by the American
Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation ranked first
among the most common cosmetic procedures for 2014.
