Fishing has long been an important part of the history and culture of Sunnmøre, Norway. During the Stone Age, tools were developed specifically for fishing and boats became necessary for transportation and catching fish. In the Viking Age, fish provided a key source of sustenance and were dried, salted, or made into lutefisk. Small, less advanced boats were used for fishing rather than Viking ships. Around 100 years ago, engines were introduced which allowed boats to travel longer distances and faster, requiring workers who could repair them.
