2. Introduction
◦ Tata SIA Airlines Limited, operating as Vistara, is an Indian full-service airline, based in Gurgaon,
with its hub at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
◦ The carrier, a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, commenced operations on
9 January 2015 with its inaugural flight between Delhi and Mumbai.
◦ The airline had carried more than 30 million passengers by now. As of 2022, Vistara serves 43
destinations across 12 countries.
3. History of Vistara
◦ The Tatas and SIA were keen to enter the Indian aviation market together and made attempts to do so
in 1994 and 2000, which ended in failures.
◦ With economic liberalization just round the corner, the airline sector also was one that had generated
much interest.
◦ In 1994, the prime minister of Singapore met the prime minister of India, where the introduction of
an Indian joint venture with SIA was also a part of the discussion.
◦ Multiple meetings followed, including some where the chairman of the Tata group was present. A
formal proposal was floated in 1995 and then again in subsequent years.
◦ Yet, these proposals never saw the light of day. Indeed, in 2010, in a speech, the chairman of the Tata
group construed that Tata’s interest to enter the airlines sector was impeded by three governments,
and as many prime ministers, and that the group would only enter via clear and transparent dealings.
◦ Another interesting fact was that the group was quite clear on SIA as a joint venture partner
4. ◦ The company unveiled its brand name as Vistara on 11 August 2014. The brand name ‘Vistara’ is
derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Vistaar’ that means ‘a limitless expanse’.
◦ The name Vistara draws inspiration from the world that Vistara inhabits, viz. the ‘limitless’ sky.
The brand also draws stimulus from the image that passengers most associate with a smooth
and enjoyable flight – the endless, blue horizon they see through the windows of an aircraft.
◦ As it aims to transform the flying experience of travellers in India, Vistara christens its brand
tagline as ‘fly the new feeling’.
◦ It commenced operations on 9 January 2015 with its inaugural flight between Delhi and
Mumbai. Vistara is a full service carrier, different from Air Asia India which is another joint
venture of Tata with Malaysia’s Air Asia that operates as a low-cost airline.
◦ On 6 August 2019, the airline launched its first international flight from Delhi to Singapore.

12. Market scope
DOMESTIC MARKET SHARE:
◦ If there is one thing that does not require any
predictability, it is the market share in Indian
domestic aviation.
◦ IndiGo - India’s largest airline by fleet, continued
to rule on the market share front. The airline
continued with its market share leadership
cornering 54.8% in 2021.
◦ However, the number two position was up for
grabs in 2021 and SpiceJet lost the position to
Air India! This was on the back of SpiceJet
cutting back on flights in the Winter schedule
and operating a skeletal schedule during the
second wave.
13. SWOT Analysis
◦ STRENGTH:
1. Vistara is backed by Tata Son's one of the largest Conglomerate in India and Singapore Airlines who
have a record of more than 20 years for being the best airline in the world.
2. Introducing frequent flier program "Club Vistara“
3. Tata and SIA are both cash rich companies with good creditworthiness.
4. Both Tata and SIA are well known companies thus enabling Vistara to get the media attention it
needs.
◦ WEAKNESS:
1. Less number of aircraft are present with Vistara as compared to its competitors.
2. Due to its premium aircraft it has high ticket prices.
3. Tata Sons also hold stake in Air Asia India which is one of the Vistara’s biggest rival thus creating a
conflict of interest
14. ◦ OPPORTUNITY:
1. Change in government policies related to the aviation sector like The Drone Policy, 2021 and
Aircraft (Amendment) Act, 2020.
2. Consistent increase in air traffic domestically as well as internationally.
◦ THREAT:
1. There is a high degree of competition because of many private players.
2. Less brand awareness is also a threat as people are not aware that Tata owns the brand.
3. In India fuel costs are 25% higher than global costs and 50% airline operating cost is airfuel.
