Editor's Notes

  • #2 Texas is focused on student success. The 60x30TX strategic plan will establish a globally competitive workforce in the state by 2030. It was developed over 18 months by the Texas Higher Education Strategic Planning Committee that included business and education leaders from across Texas. Input and feedback from stakeholders across the state helped to refine the 60x30TX plan. In addition, eight regional workshops were held around the state last year to discuss how local and regional creativity will help Texas successfully meet its higher education goals by 2030.
  • #4 State data played an important role in developing the state’s strategic plan and continues to play an important role in our efforts to make the case for the plan, disseminate information about it, inform strategies and inspire action among diverse stakeholders in the state, and to track progress.
  • #5 60x30TX has four student-centered goals, with the overarching goal that 60 percent of 25-34 year-olds will have a postsecondary credential or degree by 2030 It is critical that Texas produce an educated workforce that is able to adapt to change and compete at the highest levels, nationally and internationally. 60x30TX emphasizes all forms of post high school education, from undergraduate certificates to associate and bachelor’s degrees, to graduate and professional education. Our success in achieving the goals of the plan requires collaboration among higher education, K-12, and the workforce. 60x30TX provides latitude for two- and four-year institutions and encourages local creativity in pursuing the plan’s goals as institutions continue to pursue their own unique missions. In 1973, 28% of all U.S. jobs required postsecondary education/skills.* By 2020, 65% of all new jobs will require this level of education.* Currently, 41% of Texans aged 25-34 have any type of postsecondary degree or certificate. *Source: Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce.
  • #6 -Along with the 60x30TX plan, we have a 60x30TX website, located at www.60x30TX.com. -The website provides information about the plan and each of the goals. -*To learn more about the 60x30TX plan, click on OUR PLAN, which will open a PDF of the strategic plan. This document goes into more detail about the plan and includes information about targets and strategies. -Also notice the Hot Topics area of the webpage. This will be updated to highlight areas of high interest over time.
  • #7 Annual Survey (ACS by US Census) Texas Residents Holding associate degree or higher Certificate holders estimated Only statewide and by region
  • #9 60x30TX is focused on college success. It is not unusual for people to think “4-year degree” or “university” when they hear the word “college.” Postsecondary success comes in all shapes and sizes. In the 60x30TX strategic plan, college means enrollment and completion at any institution of higher education in the state.
  • #10 The targets for the completion goal are important to keep in mind. Like Closing the Gaps, the 60x30TX plan includes targets for student groups to help ensure students from all backgrounds become Texas graduates.
  • #11 Completion goal Complements overarching 60x30 goal, increased certificate and degree completions in Texas grows educated-population I’ll point out some trends that will make it easier to read the graph Completions rose by over 10,000 from 2015 – 2016, but we need to accelerate the pace Associate completions rose by 6,272 Bachelor’s degrees are the largest components of completions and increase by 2,000 Certificates and masters rose by about 1,000
  • #13 The third goal reads – By 2030, all graduates from Texas public institutions of higher education will have completed programs with identified marketable skills. Marketable skills are those valued by employers that can be applied in a variety of work settings, including interpersonal, cognitive, and applied skills. These skills can be either primary or complementary to a major and are acquired by students through education, including curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities.
  • #17 -The main functionality of the site is to display overall progress for each of the goals. To view information for a goal, the first step is to select that goal. Click on the Goals drop-down menu and select the goal. *-Once you have selected a goal, you will see summary information about the goal.
  • #18 -You will also see a section that contains charts and explanatory text. By default, the charts show statewide information, as seen here.
  • #19 -To view information for a region, click the region on the map or begin typing. -If you choose to type, once the text appears, you can double-click the text or click on the arrow. *-The graph will change to show information for the selected region. -Here, we can see information for the Metroplex Region. Please keep in mind that these are higher education regions, which are not the same as ESC regions. -Note that on other goal pages, information is available at the institution level as well. A “Search by Institution” checkbox will be available to view data by a specific institution.
  • #21 The menu bar on 60x30TX.com contains other useful information. -For example, the Resources drop-down contains reports, presentations, media information, etc. *-When you click on the “Data Details” link on the 60x30TX homepage, it will take you to the new Accountability System.
  • #23 Launched in July 2017 The Accountability System is used to track performance on the measures of the strategic plan. The measures included in the accountability system emphasize the state’s higher education priorities and provide stakeholders the ability to track institutional outcomes.
  • #24 -Before I discuss navigation of the Accountability System, let’s do a brief review. -There are several purposes for accountability. *it allows for the evaluation of institutional data to improve student and institutional outcomes, *and it highlights state priorities. In addition to institutional data, the accountability system provides statewide, sector-specific, districtwide, and system wide summaries. *-It helps to determine the effectiveness and quality of institutions,
  • #25 -From the Accountability System homepage, select a sector. -The statewide sector is selected by default. -Note that the drop-down menus for Public Two-Year Colleges and Non-Texas & Career Institutions can be expanded by selecting the drop-down arrows or the text. *-The sectors are listed on the top, left side of the page.
  • #26 -Once a sector and goal have been selected, reports will be displayed. It may take a few moments for the reports to load. -Reports associated with key measures are listed first, pre-opened, and have a dark blue bar at the top. You can click on the report title to minimize the report.
  • #27 -Reports not associated with key measures have a light blue bar at the top, are not pre-opened, and are listed after those associated with key measures. -A sample of contextual “Completion” goal measures is shown here.
  • #28 -When viewing reports, by default, statewide information will be displayed. -Use the drop-down menu to select an institution or peer group. -We will go over peer groups in more detail in a few minutes.
  • #29 -Both the Closing the Gaps Accountability System and the 60x30TX Accountability System have Interactive portals. -However, the 60x30TX interactive portal has some differences. -In addition to visual differences, the reports output differently. The new system generates PDF tables and provides raw data in CSV format. You can use Excel to filter the data in those files for your specific needs. -I will walk you through the basic steps of generating a report.
  • #30 *-To create a custom report, first, click on the Interactive button located on the top, right side of the page. *-Then, click the blue Create a Report button. This will take you to a page containing report options and filters.
  • #31 -Select the institution type, institution or peer group, and the data you would like to see. -Many reports will display filter options once selected, as seen in the image here. -If no changes are made, all variables will be included in the report. -To remove a report variable, deselect all options within a filter. For example, to exclude gender information, deselect both male and female. *-Please note that at this time, all available tables will appear on the list regardless of the institution type selected. For instance, if you choose public universities, the data list will still include reports for 2-year institutions. To lessen the chance of confusion, we have added 2- and 4-year indicators in parenthesis at the end of some report titles. ***University (Texas State University System), enrollment by CIP, 2016, select NO semester, select NO classifications, select ALL CIP GROUPS, select NO CIPS
  • #32 -Once you have made all of your selections, click the View Report button. The table will be displayed at the bottom of the page. *-To download the table, select the Create CSV or Create PDF button.
  • #34 -The Measures & Definitions link provides definitions for each of the measures. *-First, choose a sector. *-Then, click on a measure to view the definition.
  • #35 -Once clicked, the definition will be displayed. To minimize the definition, click the title again.
  • #36 -The Measures & Definitions link provides definitions for each of the measures. *-First, choose a sector. *-Then, click on a measure to view the definition.

  • #40 This slide is a snapshot of where we are today. As Commissioner Paredes often says, we are making progress but not fast enough. Overall, the data reveals the state is making positive, modest progress towards 60x30TX There are two targets with decrease: African American completions and High School Graduates enrolling in TX Higher Education. There is progress to celebrate but much work remains to be done.
  • #41 60x30TX has four student-centered goals, with the overarching goal that 60 percent of 25-34 year-olds will have a postsecondary credential or degree by 2030 It is critical that Texas produce an educated workforce that is able to adapt to change and compete at the highest levels, nationally and internationally. 60x30TX emphasizes all forms of post high school education, from undergraduate certificates to associate and bachelor’s degrees, to graduate and professional education. • #42 Now that you better equipped to locate higher ed data our challenge to you is: BE A FORCE FOR GOOD! And by good, we mean help us accomplish the goals of 60x30TX
