This talk will describe the collaboration between CERN and Igalia around the White
Rabbit project, the value of the Open Source approach and how it crystallizes in upstream
contributions (software and hardware).
Along this talk we will describe in detail how White Rabbit and Open Source projects
are able to raise the quality of the software used, accelerating innovation and gaining addi-
tional contributors.
In the technical arena, we will describe the development of Linux drivers and virtual
hardware (QEMU/KVM) for the FMC/TDC board designed in CERN. This approach was
showcased in LinuxCon 2012, one of the most relevant conferences in the industry. We will
comment about the importance of promoting this kind of technology in industry events.
The talk will finish with a live demo showing how virtual hardware (hardware mimick-
ing real hardware designed by CERN for WhiteRabbit) is used to develop, test and debug
control drivers using a generic software stack.
We are an Engineering study devoted to Analyze, Develop, Deploy and Integrate platforms and architectures related to Cloud Computing based on Open Source solutions.
After a short introduction on the API landscape within Cloud Computing services & its operational impacts for the NextGEOSS users, we’ll go through the EGI Federated Cloud journey in improving and harmonizing its federation and interoperability services. The EGI Cloud resources are supporting the NextGEOSS Pilot applications needs for compute and storage. These Pilot applications are empowered for Cloud Computing thanks to some NextGEOSS Platform services operated by the NextGEOSS partner Terradue. These Cloud Integration and Cloud Bursting services are based on Cloud APIs, and both deliver vendor-agnostic capabilities for the management and deployment at scale of a range of NextGEOSS EO data processing applications.

For massive graphs that fit in RAM, but not in GPU memory, it is possible to take
advantage of a shared memory system with multiple CPUs, each with multiple cores, to
accelerate pagerank computation. If the NUMA architecture of the system is properly taken
into account with good vertex partitioning, the speedup can be significant. To take steps in
this direction, experiments are conducted to implement pagerank in OpenMP using two
different approaches, uniform and hybrid. The uniform approach runs all primitives required
for pagerank in OpenMP mode (with multiple threads). On the other hand, the hybrid
approach runs certain primitives in sequential mode (i.e., sumAt, multiply).
Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.

Multi-Modal High-End Visualization System (HEVS)

This poster describes a production-grade software toolkit used for shared multi-model visualization systems developed by the Expanded
Perception and Interaction Centre (EPICentre). Our High-End Visualization System (HEVS) can be used as a framework to enable content to
be run transparently on a wider range of platforms with fewer compatibility issues and dependencies on commercial software. Content can
be transferred more easily from large screens (including cluster-driven systems) such as CAVE-like platforms, hemispherical domes, and
projected cylindrical displays through to multi-wall displays and HMDs such as VR or AR. This common framework is able to provide a unifying
approach to visual analytics and visualizations. In addition to supporting multi-modal displays, multiple platforms can be connected to create
multi-user collaborative experiences across remotely located labs. We aim to demonstrate multiple projects developed with HEVS that have
been deployed to various multi-modal display devices at the EPICentre.

Massive Networks
This work presents our strategy and pipeline architecture for visualizing very
large-scale graphs in an immersive environment [Filonik et al. 2018], using a
high-performance graphics approach. Innovation lies in utilizing GPUs for
real-time cluster-based interactive rendering, and intermediate graph
representation that utilizes GLTF file format.
Visualizations of Nanoscale
In collaboration with the National Measurement Institute (NMI), EPICentre has
developed an application to visualize data from a metrological Scanning Probe
Microscope (mSPM) that is usually used for accurate length measurements at the
nanoscale. The mSPM outputs millions of data-points from the surface of an
extremely small objects that are being inferred. After processing of raw data,
usually simple images are being produced. HEVS allowed development of
another layer of analytics on the top of it. It enabled new immersive analytics
scenarios, so collaborators could ”walk into data”, interact and discover new
patterns at the same time. HEVS was initially deployment on the EPICylinder
(CAVE-like) but also works on VR HMDs enabling full scale-ability.
