This passage from Hebrews contrasts Mount Sinai, where the Israelites received the law from God amidst fire and earthquakes, and Mount Zion, the city of the living God. It describes Mount Zion as populated by angels and Christian citizens, where God serves as the fair Judge. The reader is warned not to ignore God's gracious words, as those who ignored warnings in the past did not escape punishment. The passage concludes by stating that God will cause one last shaking of both earth and heavens to purge away all that is not essential, as God works to cleanse his kingdom with fire.

Our priorities often clash with God’s priorities for our life. Moving towards God’s priorities often requires us to move away from our personal goals and agendas. In this chapter we see that for 60 years, the returned exiles have built a comfortable life in the villages outside of Jerusalem. But God’s priority is that Jerusalem would once again be populated and secure. An empty city is a vulnerable city. But who will choose to give up all that they have to pursue God’s best? Their challenge is our challenge today!
Although God is Great and Mighty in Power, He does not misuse His Power. He uses it to transform People's lives ...Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, "Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool. If you are willing and obedient, You shall eat the good of the land; But if you refuse and rebel, You shall be devoured by the sword"; For the mouth of the LORD . Isaiah 1:18-20.- (NKJV).

1. Hebrews 12:18-29
18 Unlike your ancestors, you didn't come to Mount Sinai - all that volcanic blaze and
earthshaking rumble - to hear God speak. The earsplitting words and soul-shaking message
terrified them and they begged him to stop. When they heard the words - "If an animal
touches the Mountain, it's as good as dead" - they were afraid to move. Even Moses was
terrified.
22No, that's not your experience at all. You've come to Mount Zion, the city where the living God
resides. The invisible Jerusalem is populated by throngs of festive angels and Christian
citizens. It is the city where God is Judge, with judgments that make us just. You've come to
Jesus, who presents us with a new covenant, a fresh charter from God. He is the Mediator of
this covenant. The murder of Jesus, unlike Abel's - a homicide that cried out for vengeance -
became a proclamation of grace. So don't turn a deaf ear to these gracious words. If those
who ignored earthly warnings didn't get away with it, what will happen to us if we turn our
backs on heavenly warnings?
26 His voice that time shook the earth to its foundations; this time - he's told us this quite plainly
- he'll also rock the heavens: "One last shaking, from top to bottom, stem to stern.“ The
phrase "one last shaking" means a thorough housecleaning, getting rid of all the historical
and religious junk so that the unshakable essentials stand clear and uncluttered. Do you see
what we've got? An unshakable kingdom! And do you see how thankful we must be? Not
only thankful, but brimming with worship, deeply reverent before God. For God is not an
indifferent bystander. He's actively cleaning house, torching all that needs to burn, and he
won't quit until it's all cleansed. God himself is Fire!
