Monitoring Outcomes of Children Who Wear Hearing Aids Phonak
This document discusses outcome measures for evaluating the auditory performance of pediatric hearing aid users. It describes the development and validation of several tools, including the LittlEARS Auditory Questionnaire, PEACH scale, Ling 6 sounds detection test, and UWO Plurals test. A study found that typically developing children with hearing aids performed well on these measures when fitted according to evidence-based protocols, while children with comorbidities or complex factors had more variable results. Outcome evaluation is important for tracking individual progress, improving service delivery, and assessing early hearing detection and intervention programs.
Daily activities like mowing the lawn, attending concerts, and certain occupations like factory work, farming, and the military can expose individuals to noise levels that can cause noise-induced hearing loss over time. NIHL is preventable if proper precautions are taken such as wearing hearing protection during loud noise exposure, turning down music players, and walking away from loud noises when possible. Resources are available to learn more about identifying dangerous noise levels and finding treatment options for any resulting hearing loss.
The document discusses how to read an audiogram and the different types of hearing tests. It explains the differences between air and bone conduction tests and what parts of the ear each tests. It also outlines the ranges of frequencies and decibel levels measured on an audiogram as well as common types of hearing loss such as conductive, sensorineural, and mixed. Finally, it notes which levels of hearing loss are most likely to benefit from hearing aids and for those with profound loss, cochlear implants may be an option.
This document provides guidance on performing speech audiometry tests, including speech reception threshold (SRT), word recognition score (WRS), and speech-in-noise tests. It discusses procedures for determining SRT and WRS, considerations for non-native English speakers and those with hearing loss, and the clinical significance of test results including how they can indicate site of lesion. Masking procedures are also outlined to limit interference between ears during testing.
This document defines different types of hearing loss including conductive, sensorineural, and mixed. It describes the magnitude, type, and configuration of hearing loss. Normal hearing is defined as thresholds ≤15 dB. Degree of loss is categorized as slight, mild, moderate, etc. based on puretone average. Conductive loss shows normal bone conduction but abnormal air conduction with an air-bone gap. Sensorineural loss has equal abnormal air and bone conduction thresholds. Mixed loss has characteristics of both. Configuration can be flat, rising, sloping, or precipitous. Certain conditions require medical referral.
Our hearing system allows us to perceive sound through a series of sensitive organs, including the ear canal, eardrum, and cochlea. The eardrum is the primary line of defense against damage to the inner ear from loud noises and should be protected, as it can become ruptured, transferring sound to the cochlea which converts sounds through tiny hairs into signals to the brain.

Hearing aids can provide relief for hearing loss. Bluetooth hearing aids can directly connect to devices like phones and mp3 players to amplify sound without feedback. This allows private listening to calls, music, and TV without disturbing others. Local providers offer Bluetooth hearing aids and information.
The Phonak Ambra hearing aids boast the latest technology to provide clear phone calls from both ears and help the user focus on conversations in noisy environments, allowing them to attend social events and regain aspects of their life lost to hearing loss. A demonstration can be scheduled by calling (480) 374-5571 or visiting www.Hearing-Aids-Mesa-AZ.com.
1) Battery issues are one of the main causes of hearing aid failure. Dead or defective batteries can cause weak output, distortion, feedback, and strange sounds from hearing aids.
2) To get the most battery life, wearers should develop a replacement schedule and disengage batteries when aids are not in use, like overnight. Batteries should also be inserted correctly with the positive side in the marked position.
3) Spent batteries should be thrown away rather than reused, as this can cause confusion. Short battery life usually indicates a defective battery or hearing aid problem requiring repair. Proper maintenance can help extend battery life.

Hearing Audiogram
1. Hearing Audiogram
A hearing audiogram is the technical name
for a hearing test. A hearing audiogram is a
technique used by hearing professionals to
measure how well a person can hear. In
most cases, to get a hearing audiogram,
a patient will sit inside a booth with some
degree of soundproofing. A hearing
professional will then measure how well the
patient can hear sounds that are
transmitted through air, which is how we
hear most sound. To measure this, the audiologist will first
identify either the left ear or right ear for testing. They will then
play tones of different frequencies, ranging from low-pitch sounds
to high pitch sounds. Each time the patient hears the tone, they
respond, either by clicking a button or raising their hand. The
audiologist then makes each tone less intense to find the quietest
sound that the patient can hear. When they have done this for all
sound frequencies, they then repeat this for the other ear. This
tells the audiologist how well each ear can hear sounds that travel
through air. If the hearing in either ear is poorer than what is
considered to be normal, then the audiologist will try to assess
whether the hearing deficit is a result of problems in the middle
ear or the hearing nerve itself. To assess this, hearing will be
tested using a bone-vibrator, which bypasses the middle ear and

2. transmits sound directly to the hearing nerve. If hearing is
normal with this device it suggests that the problem is with the
middle ear. If hearing is not normal using the bone-vibrator, it
suggests that the problem is with the hearing nerve itself. The
extent of the hearing loss and the root will dictate the avenue for
treatment. Potential avenues would be a hearing aid or referral to
an Ear, Nose and Throat clinic where a surgery might be offered.
