This document proposes adopting electronic medical records (EMRs) to improve communication and information sharing between physicians in a healthcare network. It summarizes observations of referrals between physicians in a small practice. It then describes a survey that found physicians generally prefer EMRs over paper records due to organization, legibility and integration capabilities. The document advocates for a universal EMR system across all healthcare providers in a region to consolidate patient medical histories and facilitate continuity of care. Government incentives and penalties are pushing healthcare networks to transition from paper to EMRs.
