Patricia has worked at the institution for four years and has encountered two attacks against her from two separate inmates over a year span. Patricia is freshly returned back to work after being off for a week due to her injuries from her latest attack. The attack involved her being pushed down by an inmate, causing a sprain arm. For the goals to be realized, all the seven areas of health are important because they are connected. The first area of health is education. Education is one of the indicators of life outcomes, for instance, social status, employment, and income and can also be used to predict wellbeing and attitude (Anderson, 2015). Other people apply education as a tool that helps them in shaping their social identity and establishing an understanding of their environment. Education shapes the social identity on how people relate with each other in society. A positive social identity is characterized by positive results, such as increased health status, wellbeing, political engagement, and social trust. Currently, a lot of emphases has been placed on education, and therefore those with lower education find it much challenging to positively identify themselves socially hence negatively affecting their self-esteem and wellbeing (Anderson, 2015).
Individuals with higher education levels tend to develop much interest to vie for political positions than those with lower levels of education. These educated individuals also have got more social trust than their uneducated counterparts — several studies confirmed that there are a number of health benefits of education. Baum &Payea (2013) explains that a more educated person has a higher probability of getting a good job with health-promoting packages such as health insurance. On the other hand, those with low education have higher chances of doing risky jobs. Those individuals who are more educated are subjected to more earnings. A Population Survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor and the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2012 confirmed that college graduates registered twice as many average earnings than their colleagues who had dropped out of high school and one and a half higher than those who had graduated from high school (Baum &Payea, 2013).
The families that earn more income are in a position to buy healthy food, can get time to perform exercises and can afford to pay for health services and transport cost. Cultural Competency and Treatment of persons with mental illness
The culturally diverse forensic population that I chose to research is those who are mentally ill. This population is of particular interest to me because I have always wanted to work in agencies that do an intervention for members of this population and I have always felt that something should be done when I find helpless people on the streets who are mentally ill. Mentally ill persons can be described using characteristics which cut across the population but lean mostly to the side of those who have an extreme mental illness. Most of them experience financial distress, homelessness, lack of money to rent houses and dependence of social programs like social security. Others have violent behavior and remain dependent on mental services for a long time (Naylor et al., 2016). The mentally ill often commit small crimes and because of their health situation, they find themselves in difficult situations. According to Rickwood, 2006, mentally ill persons going through corrections procedures often suffer more psychological problems and this limits their chances of recovery.
The Unique Characteristics of Mentally Ill Patients
Rickwood explores the representation of the mentally ill in the criminal justice system. According to Rickwood, the mentally ill are over three times more represented in the criminal justice compared to the ordinary community and this is something of concern. In certain cultures, more persons who have a mental illness live in correction facilities compared to others. However, incarceration is seen to be a major cause of mental health problems due to some of the corrective measures that are employed. Depression among Hispanics is noted to be highest at slightly over 10%, followed by African Americans than Whites (Corin, 2017) Depression cuts across all age groups and genders in the recent past. According to Rickwood there is need to ensure that specialized and professional mental health services are provided in correctional facilities to ensure that the correction process does not negatively impact the victims. pre-release preparation and post-release follow-up are key areas that need a proper overhaul to ensure that the number of cases of relapse is reduced accordingly. Proper understanding of the cultural background of a patient is a major consideration in choosing treatment procedures and it ensures that the health service provider is cult rally aware of the implications of certain choices on certain groups of people. The issue that I chose for my critical health issue is family planning and teenage pregnancies. For years, it seemed that everywhere I turned there were young teenage girls that were pregnant surrounding me. Currently, “the U.S. still has a teen birthrate of 31.2 per 1,000 teens, nearly one-and-a-half times the rate in the United Kingdom, which has one of the highest rates in Western Europe (Vestal, 2015, para. 1). I believe that prevention programs are the best method to reduce the high teenage pregnancy rates. The World Health Organization stated that, “family planning is a method for helping people to have the desired number of children and for spacing births” (as cited in Friis, et al., 2013, 5.2, para. 2). Healthy People 2020 set their goal for family planning to improve the spacing and planning of pregnancy, but also to prevent unwanted pregnancies (Friis, et al., 2013).
Covenant House has on-site counselors who help teen moms work on building confidence and gain independence. Moms can attend their workshops that teach them various parenting skills and the importance for them and their children to live healthy lives. The American Health Care Industry is a very large social institution. The health care system is designed to adapt to the communities served (Schaefer, 2009), it is a formal organization structured for efficiency and a specific purpose. The three major sociological orientations are functionalist, conflict, and interactionist; we will discuss each perspective as it pertains to the health care industry. Each perspective has its strengths and weaknesses, from high function to discrimination through social class, to stability and lack of accessibility.

Health insurance is used to supplement the outrageous cost of medical care and is out of reach to many United States residents. New data indicates 50.7 million Americans are without private health care insurance and the outlook is grim due to the erosion of the economy and employer-based insurance plans (Greenstein, 2010). Federal programs attempt to provide basic or restricted coverage to the one out of every six Americans stretching the systems already limited resources. These constraints leave the uninsured with few choices, less comprehensive care, long wait times, and increased frustration within poor communities.

The specific communities most affected by health care coverage are the elderly, children, and people living below the poverty line. Social Determinants of Health and Rural Nursing

Social determinants of health is a term defined by the Healthy People 2020 (Office of
Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, n.d., section Understanding) as “…conditions in the
environment in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship and age that affect a wide
range of health, functioning, and quality of life outcomes and risks”. In this definition “place”
matters, as does race/ethnicity, age, education, social support etc. – all of the factors that are part
of one’s socio-economic status. Thus being a rural dweller alone does not put your health at risk
but if you are a rural dweller with little social and economic resources you will have a higher risk
for ill health. You may need to use more resources to access health care than someone in a more
urban place, simply because of limited accessibility. For those living in a rural setting without
reliable transportation being able to access health care is more arduous than for those with access
to transportation as well as health care.
Anyone with even a modicum of knowledge on the history of nursing can connect the
profession and past efforts and successes in enhancing population health through work on the
social determinants of health. This work can be seen in urban areas by nurses such as Lillian
Wald at Henry House in New York and rural areas in the work of Mary Breckenridge and the
Frontier Nursing Service. In both cases nursing was caring for individuals and families but also
looking at the macro level problems of poverty, lack of formal education, poor housing, lack of
access to health care; all of which would be deemed today as improving the social determinants
of health. Since the 1920’s with the work of Wald and Breckinridge we have made inroads into
the health status of people in the US. In general we have better living situations for individuals

and families, more education and more wealth. However, the upward trajectory in health status
over the years is not carrying all and Healthy People 2020 (n.d.) promotes a place based
organizing framework that addresses five major determinants of health: a) Economic Stability, b)
Education, c) Social and Community Context, d) Health and Health Care, and e) Neighborhood
and Built Environment. Nursing has a clear role in providing health care beyond care of the
individual. Flynn (2016) writes that “…nursing may have more potential than other health
professions in bringing power and authority to the idea of.

The culturally diverse forensic population that I chose to research is those who are mentally ill. This population is of particular interest to me because I have always wanted to work in agencies that do an intervention for members of this population and I have always felt that something should be done when I find helpless people on the streets who are mentally ill. Mentally ill persons can be described using characteristics which cut across the population but lean mostly to the side of those who have an extreme mental illness. Most of them experience financial distress, homelessness, lack of money to rent houses and dependence of social programs like social security. Others have violent behavior and remain dependent on mental services for a long time (Naylor et al., 2016). The mentally ill often commit small crimes and because of their health situation, they find themselves in difficult situations. According to Rickwood, 2006, mentally ill persons going through corrections procedures often suffer more psychological problems and this limits their chances of recovery.
The Unique Characteristics of Mentally Ill Patients
Rickwood explores the representation of the mentally ill in the criminal justice system. According to Rickwood, the mentally ill are over three times more represented in the criminal justice compared to the ordinary community and this is something of concern. In certain cultures, more persons who have a mental illness live in correction facilities compared to others. However, incarceration is seen to be a major cause of mental health problems due to some of the corrective measures that are employed. Depression among Hispanics is noted to be highest at slightly over 10%, followed by African Americans than Whites (Corin, 2017) Depression cuts across all age groups and genders in the recent past. According to Rickwood there is need to ensure that specialized and professional mental health services are provided in correctional facilities to ensure that the correction process does not negatively impact the victims. pre-release preparation and post-release follow-up are key areas that need a proper overhaul to ensure that the number of cases of relapse is reduced accordingly. Proper understanding of the cultural background of a patient is a major consideration in choosing treatment procedures and it ensures that the health service provider is cult rally aware of the implications of certain choices on certain groups of people. Social Determinants of Health and Rural Nursing

Social determinants of health is a term defined by the Healthy People 2020 (Office of
Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, n.d., section Understanding) as “…conditions in the
environment in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship and age that affect a wide
range of health, functioning, and quality of life outcomes and risks”. In this definition “place”
matters, as does race/ethnicity, age, education, social support etc. – all of the factors that are part
of one’s socio-economic status. Thus being a rural dweller alone does not put your health at risk
but if you are a rural dweller with little social and economic resources you will have a higher risk
for ill health. You may need to use more resources to access health care than someone in a more
urban place, simply because of limited accessibility. For those living in a rural setting without
reliable transportation being able to access health care is more arduous than for those with access
to transportation as well as health care.
Anyone with even a modicum of knowledge on the history of nursing can connect the
profession and past efforts and successes in enhancing population health through work on the
social determinants of health. This work can be seen in urban areas by nurses such as Lillian
Wald at Henry House in New York and rural areas in the work of Mary Breckenridge and the
Frontier Nursing Service. In both cases nursing was caring for individuals and families but also
looking at the macro level problems of poverty, lack of formal education, poor housing, lack of
access to health care; all of which would be deemed today as improving the social determinants
of health. Since the 1920’s with the work of Wald and Breckinridge we have made inroads into
the health status of people in the US. In general we have better living situations for individuals

and families, more education and more wealth. However, the upward trajectory in health status
over the years is not carrying all and Healthy People 2020 (n.d.) promotes a place based
organizing framework that addresses five major determinants of health: a) Economic Stability, b)
Education, c) Social and Community Context, d) Health and Health Care, and e) Neighborhood
and Built Environment. Nursing has a clear role in providing health care beyond care of the
individual. Flynn (2016) writes that “…nursing may have more potential than other health
professions in bringing power and authority to the idea of.
